I could understand a bureau in Iraq, Afghanistan or Syria but how could they put their reporters in this much danger?

So how long will it be before they are firebombed?

A chance for "news" that's actually news??

Something other than days of conflicting rumors, updates on which star/let did something stupid du moment, idiots on trial & the people who obsess on them & talking heads who remind us Max Headroom was right?

Michigan does have a the largest Muslim population in the US and probably the largest in the world outside of the Middle East... Also it seems like it could be good business for Detroit.

Hehehehehe.

As bad as Detroit is, it's nicer and less dangerous than a lot of the ME.  Also, showing those folks that the US is a pretty nice place to be would (maybe) turn some hearts in a less angry direction.

Arab world showing the West how it's done. I guess it is the dark ages for news in america now.

Well, we do have a very noisy and well-financed effort to install a theocracy here, so, yeah.

Wow those comments on that site are some weapons grade potato. Al Jazeera English is all I watched when all the shiat went down in Egypt. They were by far the best at reporting it.

As always the comments are hilarious.

As it turns out Al-Jazeera has better coverage than Fox/CNN/MSNBC, though it's not hard considering they are all worse than twitter.

Quite franktlly, I'd rather live near an A-Rab than a Knee-Grow.
I defy anyone to name an area or neighborhood that knee grows have moved into and improved!

Detroit must make Al-Jazeera pine for the good old days in Beirut while being able to commute back to the relative safety of Dearborn.

Indonesia, Malaysia and Bangladesh are all outside the Middle East.

I think that distinction might belong to Malaysia.

After further research (Wikipedia), it looks like Michigan has more Muslims than any other state but a lot less than a lot of the Asian and African countries...

As I understood it when I lived there, Southeast Michigan has the largest population of persons of Middle Eastern descent outside the ME; that includes Muslims, Chaldeans, Copts and Jewish Arabs.  There are 3rd and 4th generation Arab-American families beyond number in and around Dearborn.
Also, some of the freshest and most delicious varieties of food you'll have in your life.
Likewise, Detroit's only a few minute tunnel or bridge trip into Canada so any new network would be glad for the proximity to 2 countries at once.
Or were we just trying to be awful under the guise of cheap humor?

I lived in the Detroit suburbs for a few years. I miss the Middle Eastern food, it was fantastic.

Dearborn, which is right next door, has the largest concentration of Arabs in the United States. No surprise that they chose to open up shop there.

FTFA: Al Jazeera, which has 70 bureaus around the world, has drawn fire from critics who argue that it lacks independence; some have called it a propaganda tool. The network is partially backed by a grant from the Qatari government, in addition to ad revenue and subscriber fees.

A propaganda tool? Oh, so it's not "fair and balanced" like Fox News Channel? Huh.

I find out more news about the US from organizations based outside the US. According to domestic news outlets, the Jodi Arias trial and the Benghazi scandal are the only things happening right now.

They are "propoganda" in that they air the tapes that the Taliban are always releasing. Not to recruit, but to inform. It's almost like they believe presenting information is a good thing, and not just summarizing everything for the audience so they don't have to do any work....

But yeah, not treating people like retards is terrorism.

//Seriously, you should read Al-Jazeera English.

Footor is right. I live in metro detroit and it does have the largest middle Easter population outside of the middle east. Great people and great food. They are a real big push on fixing up the city.lots of businesses and restaurants. Not one suicide bomber.

You should look into the BBC, Guardian, and/or CBC. Come to the educated side :) :)

Maybe you should think about the racist society that promotes ghettoization of black people in the US. And utterly fails at anti-poverty measures in general.

Or you know, keep being a racist asshole. Your call, I guess.

I concur. I think their journalism is as good or better than the BBC (which kinda sucks now), it is certainly better than the "infotainment" the CBC offers. Seeing the media that the poor folks in the US deal with....I think people should be welcoming the Al-Jazeera...

/excellent documentaries on the web site for free....
