I've only done the FCBD thing once in the decade they've been doing it.

Too many people, the books generally aren't worth it. And the issues from major companies will wind up in a collected edition down the road, anyway.

/yes, even the Walking Dead story Kirkman says won't be reprinted will eventually be reprinted. And if it's not... well, it must not have been that important a story in the first place since the majority of the reading audience, who read the book in TPB and HC, will never read it.

No, there are specific books retailers have to buy for Free Comic Book Day.

Although, yeah, the logical thing would probably be to make it "Empty the quarter box of all the crap that never sold" Day.

We picked up the entire reboot of Batman. My husband is tickled to get back into them, and so far I've enjoyed what I've read.

We did pick up the free Walking Dead issue. I've never read the novels, but this was an interesting little bit. A good intro for people who've only seen the tv series, I guess.

Our store actually does it all weekend.
Costume contests and everything.
Walking Dead is a must.

"What is Free Comic Book Day?
Free Comic Book Day is a single day - the first Saturday in May each year - when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely FREE* to anyone who comes into their stores. *Check with your local comic book shop for their participation and rules."

The only time I tried participating in this, the free comics were nothing more than previews for the actual comics. I couldn't just walk in and get the newest comic in whatever title I chose. So misleading advertising at best, bait and switch at worst.

Whats even more gimpish are 'illustrated novels' .
If you want to read garbage read Stephen King (I pissed away my high school years reading King.....and having marathon Risk and Axis and Allies And our own pencil and paper global 'Super Risk' games sessions on acid with my 'crew') Robert McCammon has some pretty cool novels as well.William F. Johnstone too.I built a personal library of dime store horror , 'The Chair','The Uninvited','The Lake','Savage' and on and on and on.There are plenty of ways to be a nerd without being a comic gimp.

Your LCS should have explained it better. It has always been all new comics for the most part. Here's the list. They are few length original comics. Not just previews.

Does Comixology totally sidestep them? I generally do digital out of laziness and to avoid cluttering up my place with longboxes, but it would be nice to starve the beast a bit.

Also, if anyone wants suggestions on stuff yo buy while you are there, I highly recommend picking up Saga, Morning Glories, and The Manhattan Projects. They have been my favorite new reads this past year.

Plus how many billions of dollars of box office have been generated by comic IPs? Comics are basically a core part of regular culture these days.

Eh, I only buy trades now, but the kids scored some books that made them happy, including the Boom! and Top Shelf collections.

I did FCBD every single year since its inception up to 2010. Thats when I realized that the free comics are rarely worth picking up anymore. Almost all of them are either samples or reprints, with only a few being done specifically for the event. Of course, the stores are under no obligation to give them away, so those most desirable issues always ended up having a price tag attached. My last comic store actually let their box holders have first crack at them the night before (with no limits on quantity) and the leftovers were put out to everyone else on the actual day (with a limit of one per person). It's just a big waste of time anymore which sucks because It used to be a lot of fun.

The exact opposite of this is true.

Of course, the stores are under no obligation to give them away, so those most desirable issues always ended up having a price tag attached.

We gave away 22,000 comics last year and didnt sell a single one. We have 27,000 this year.

My last comic store actually let their box holders have first crack at them the night before (with no limits on quantity) and the leftovers were put out to everyone else on the actual day (with a limit of one per person).

You need to switch stores.

I'm fairly certain that someone pissed in my cheerios this morning, and I still think this guy is being a douche. He even put "illustrated novels" in parentheses. (See what I did there?) Oh, and Suddernly Samhain, Reading dime store horror doesn't make you a nerd, It makes you a boring 44 year old with the attitude of a 14 year old goth kid. If you don't like comic books, GTFO of the thread dipshiat.
