You lose the perspective of what sort of assholes people were towards other races when you sanitize the text


And gain it back by the authority figures and community advocates who give you the santized version.

This. She may have had a bit more to do with the book than being his aide but the bones of the book are almost certainly his. I think he did all the heavy lifting and she put a bit of polish on it.
