I like Billy Crystal. Although he's quick on his feet, he hasn't done scripted TV since what, SNL? We'll see.

Crystal has to fill his time somehow since his beloved Clippers assfarked themselves out of the playoffs tonight.

The problem with Billy Crystal is that he's not as funny as he thinks he is. He can be funny -- just not that funny.

And he always puts a maudlin spin on things. It's like he's longing for a comeback of what used to be funny in the 1940s and 50s.

I bet it's about an openly gay man, who fathers a daughter with a criminal defense attorney and his wacky  extended family are the recurring characters.

I was forced to watch that movie where Billy Crystal and Bette Midler babysit their grandkids, so based on that, I have a feeling this is a bad idea. Late 1980's/Early 1990' Billy Crystal is entertaining but that was a long time ago now.

I have not seen a thing from Billy Crystal for many years, but I gotta admit... I liked City Slickers. And, I don't think anyone else could have delivered the immortal line from the Princess Bride, "Have fun storming the castle", quite so well. :p

Billy Crystal?  Eh.  I'm more put off by the words 'sitcom' and 'Fox'.

Let's just at least be happy that we are getting scripted shows again...I want the era of reality tv to come to a close.

And you'd have to explain to everyone under 30 who Sammy Davis Jr. was.

I remember him mostly from the Cannonball Run movies, myself.

No love here for the star of our show, the kamikaze of comedy!

Fasten your seat belts, put on your crash helmets; because here he comes...

Mr. Saturday Night...

Buddy Young, Junior!"

As long as he doesn't do that stupid impersonation of a whiny old Jewish guy.

Oh, wait... that's not an impersonation any more.

She was trying to be funny?  I thought she was a walking example of how it's possible to be both ugly and sexy at the same time.

Totally awesome. I am sad I cannot find Soap on Tv anywhere.

Fark Me To Tears: The problem with Billy Crystal is that he's not as funny as he thinks he is. He can be funny -- just not that funny.

He's also developing that late-in-the-career thing that Johnny Carson eventually did, where he makes jokes and topical references in a slightly clunky, unnatural way, so that you can almost hear the writer pitching/explaining it to him.

Hell, you'd have to explain to everyone under 30 who Billy Crystal is at this point.

/Clicked on the article expecting to see a picture of him but there's just some weird Billy Crystal wax figure, what gives?

Larry David is the funny one.

Soap was one of the funniest things on American television that wasn't made for the BBC and shown on PBS.

Clearly Billy Crystal doesn't prevent good comedy from happeining.

Why? Their roster was good this year. Even Ben and Kate, which was canceled, was very well done.

Good point.  I always thought that Carson got really stale at the very end of his run.

So I'm guessing there will be a song and dance routine artificially injected somewhere in the show.

2013-05-04 02:23:54 PM
Details about the premise are sketchy but I hear the project is based on an European format and is described as an edgy comedy.

It will be about an old Jewish guy walking around New York City talking/yelling at people, with clown music in the background.

Real edgy.

Good for him. His political commentary career hasn't worked out, it's good to see him returning to his roots as a comedian.

My most cringe-worthy example was in the mid 1980's when Carson mentioned Laverne & Shirley and said that they were "totally biatchin', fer sure, fer sure."  I remember thinking that one of his writers purposely set him up to look like an idiot.
