Is it normal to name government buildings for people when they are not dead?

Reagan and Bush got airports while still alive.  The Tip O'Neill federal building was built while he was still alive. I do not remember when it got his name.

Of course, it's company policy never to imply ownership in the event of a semen-stained blue dress. We have to use the indefinite article, "a semen-stained blue dress", never ... your semen-stained blue dress.

Yep, usually as long as they're not currently in office, and sometimes if they are.

I would have figured they'd name the one in Mena after them.

Yes, but I like them.

I probably said the same thing about them back then. It seems odd. You would think the postage stamp rule would apply.

I just can't wait until George W. Bush gets something named after him.  Then, instead of laughing about having an affair with a secretary, we can all laugh about starting a war with well over 100,000 casualties that cost the US upwards of 2 trillion dollars.

The W. library is really creepy. You can play this "decision points" game where everything that you choose to do that doesn't exactly replicate Bush's decisions ends in abject failure. It's like the promo that plays at Biff World in Back to the Future Part 2.

Bad as that is, I hope you'll be equally indignant about the fact that Obama has increased the national debt by 6 trillion dollars during his time in office so far and he has another 4 years to go.

Libraries, i understand, by why in the name of sweet swaggering swizzle sticks do we name airports after presidents, anyway?

"Thanks for all your hard work, President Coolidge!  In your name, these people will suffer sweaty seatmates, mile-long forced marches, and warm sandwiches made before your mother was born!"

2013-05-04 01:20:35 AM
This is nice and all, but it still isn't that interesting. Buildings and wings of buildings, roads, parks, etc... shouldn't be named after people or events in a purely honorary context. To really get an idea of the people and culture of a time and place, sarcasm is sort of a necessity. When an airport names a men's room after Larry Craig, then we'll really be making progress as a people.

It's more about the use of false propaganda to start a war, the over 100,000 civilian deaths, and the loss of a great deal of national honor rather than the money. As for the money, Obama has been forced to pay for checks that Bush wrote. It takes a long time to reverse that momentum, especially on with a congress that refuses to raise taxes on the super-wealthy or cut military spending.

If I'm so concerned about civilian casualties, about Obama's drone strikes, you ask? Good question. I hate them, and they're a huge black mark on his presidency that will haunt us for a long time to come, and they've gone a long way to souring me on his presidency. I'm not waving his flag any more, but compared to his predecessor, the man is a saint.

Considering that each of our children would inherit $53,409 (and increasing) of his or her share of the US public debt, I'd rather sire offspring with a peasant subsistence farmer somewhere in the third world... but thanks for the offer all the same.

That's kind of irrelevant. Hillary, except for a brief moment as chairperson for healthcare reform, was not involved in governance in any official capacity with Bill during his presidency.

If she were getting her own honor for her work as Sec. of State, I wouldn't be as confused. This gesture makes it seems like she's tagging along on Bill's coattails as a hanger-on. It diminishes her and her accomplishments to be lumped in with her husband for no clear reason other than being the loyal wife of the President.

Anyone have a good link for exactly how many civilian casualties there have been? The drone strikes are problematic for a variety of reasons, but I don't think they're actually MORE deadly to civilians than regular air-delivered ordnance.

That's because Bentonville is a couple hundred miles away in the Northwest corner of the state next to the MO line.

Wal-Mart runs that entire economy up in that part of the state.

Hil is from Illinois, isn't she? She has had a heavy influence on the state, being a high profile lawyer and then first lady, founding charitable organizations, serving on walmart's (and many other) board of directors, trying to reform a broken education system, etc.

Also, Walmart's airport is in Cave Springs, outside Bentonville. XNA. There is also a cargo airport nearby, i think. It's important because Walmart's makes all their vendors come to them and they send buyers out to all around the world to bring back and analyze products by the pallet, as well as moving personnel.
I don't think anything but private planes and airshows are done at Drake Field here in Fayetteville anymore.

Tulsa is about 100 miles closer to Bentonville than Little Rock is, but if you are flying in to do business with Walmart, the airport halfway between Bentonville and Fayetteville gets a lot of air traffic for such a small airport.

You'd most likely fly into that one or Tulsa.

Unfortunately, it is becoming the new normal in Amerika. In Anchorage, there is Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, named for a then-sitting US congressman. Stuff like that always raises the hair on my back, whether it's naming a public facility for a current secretary of state or for some political pork-grabber who's retired but still alive. I hope that the name Hill-Billy for the LR airport sticks.

Baron Harkonnen: I just can't wait until George W. Bush gets something named after him.  Then, instead of laughing about having an affair with a secretary, we can all laugh about starting a war with well over 100,000 casualties that cost the US upwards of 2 trillion dollars.

Ah, the smell of butt hurt.

No one should EVER forgive his crimes.

And Bush has exactly what to do with this article? Nothing. Yet butt hurt Farkers will turn anything into a cry-fest about Bush.

He's not in prison yet.  Therefore, it's always a good time to bring it up.

Bad as that is, I hope you'll be equally indignant about the fact that Obama has increased the national debt by 6 trillion dollars during his time in office so far and he has another 4 years to go.

In similar news, do you know how long it took those lazy bastards in New York City to clean up midtown after 9/11? And how much *money* they p*ssed away? Probably all Union labor, amirite? Hell, they're *still* finding airplane parts! In Texas they would have just plowed the sand over the smoking hole and gotten back to the Lord's business!

5Nickels: AverageAmericanGuy: Jesus McSordid: AverageAmericanGuy: I'm happy that Bill Clinton is getting an airport named after him, but I don't understand why Hillary would get one as well. She's never served in any elected executive position.

Neither has John Wayne.

Except for a brief moment, she was never involved in a sexual relationship with her husband but alas, Amy Carter still holds the title as the ugliest daughter in the white house with Chelsea a close second.

Fine. Post a pic of your wife/girlfriend/boy toy and we'll all critique your taste (and speculate on the mental illness involved in *shudder* being attached *you*).

Maybe it's because they're both from Arkansas. Has anybody else from Arkansas done anything noteworthy?

/That's a serious question. I'm not from the USA.

Walmart.  Hilary started at Walmart right around the time they quit selling things in America.  This is why the Clintons signed NAFTA and gave away the farm to the Chinese.

Mrtraveler01: randomjsa: Well that answers my life long question of whether or not you can name an airport after a felon like Bill Clinton.

National Airport outside of DC is named after someone who sold weapons to Iran in return for money they can use to fund the Contras in Nicaragua.

The bar isn't that high.

My favorite retardation during that mess was when a Republican said that the nation's capital's airport should be named after a great American. At the time, it was Washington National Airport.

Politicians take credit for things when it is in their best interest, they should be accountable for everything that occurs during their terms.

Bubba International Airport has a nice ring to it. So does Whitewater International Airport.

Bill and Hil hafta share an airport?

They can't get their own each?

That seems a might chintzy.

Personally I like "Hil-Billy Intl" but the public at large will go with "Billary Intl" most likely for which I am fully prepared to blame Peephole magazine and other media outlets for their over-fondness for making up and legitimizing  terms like "Brangelina", "Bennifer" and "TomKat".

This shows a big shift in government policy. In the past, they'd name airports after people who suck (Reagan) and now they're naming them after people who got sucked.
