Is it normal to name government buildings for people when they are not dead?

Reagan and Bush got airports while still alive.  The Tip O'Neill federal building was built while he was still alive. I do not remember when it got his name.

Of course, it's company policy never to imply ownership in the event of a semen-stained blue dress. We have to use the indefinite article, "a semen-stained blue dress", never ... your semen-stained blue dress.

Yep, usually as long as they're not currently in office, and sometimes if they are.

I would have figured they'd name the one in Mena after them.

Yes, but I like them.

I probably said the same thing about them back then. It seems odd. You would think the postage stamp rule would apply.

I just can't wait until George W. Bush gets something named after him.  Then, instead of laughing about having an affair with a secretary, we can all laugh about starting a war with well over 100,000 casualties that cost the US upwards of 2 trillion dollars.

The W. library is really creepy. You can play this "decision points" game where everything that you choose to do that doesn't exactly replicate Bush's decisions ends in abject failure. It's like the promo that plays at Biff World in Back to the Future Part 2.

Bad as that is, I hope you'll be equally indignant about the fact that Obama has increased the national debt by 6 trillion dollars during his time in office so far and he has another 4 years to go.

Libraries, i understand, by why in the name of sweet swaggering swizzle sticks do we name airports after presidents, anyway?

"Thanks for all your hard work, President Coolidge!  In your name, these people will suffer sweaty seatmates, mile-long forced marches, and warm sandwiches made before your mother was born!"

2013-05-04 01:20:35 AM
This is nice and all, but it still isn't that interesting. Buildings and wings of buildings, roads, parks, etc... shouldn't be named after people or events in a purely honorary context. To really get an idea of the people and culture of a time and place, sarcasm is sort of a necessity. When an airport names a men's room after Larry Craig, then we'll really be making progress as a people.

It's more about the use of false propaganda to start a war, the over 100,000 civilian deaths, and the loss of a great deal of national honor rather than the money. As for the money, Obama has been forced to pay for checks that Bush wrote. It takes a long time to reverse that momentum, especially on with a congress that refuses to raise taxes on the super-wealthy or cut military spending.

If I'm so concerned about civilian casualties, about Obama's drone strikes, you ask? Good question. I hate them, and they're a huge black mark on his presidency that will haunt us for a long time to come, and they've gone a long way to souring me on his presidency. I'm not waving his flag any more, but compared to his predecessor, the man is a saint.

Considering that each of our children would inherit $53,409 (and increasing) of his or her share of the US public debt, I'd rather sire offspring with a peasant subsistence farmer somewhere in the third world... but thanks for the offer all the same.

And let's not forget that Bush kept the real cost of the wars off the books.

That's kind of irrelevant. Hillary, except for a brief moment as chairperson for healthcare reform, was not involved in governance in any official capacity with Bill during his presidency.

If she were getting her own honor for her work as Sec. of State, I wouldn't be as confused. This gesture makes it seems like she's tagging along on Bill's coattails as a hanger-on. It diminishes her and her accomplishments to be lumped in with her husband for no clear reason other than being the loyal wife of the President.

Anyone have a good link for exactly how many civilian casualties there have been? The drone strikes are problematic for a variety of reasons, but I don't think they're actually MORE deadly to civilians than regular air-delivered ordnance.

Maybe it's because they're both from Arkansas. Has anybody else from Arkansas done anything noteworthy?

Sort of surprised Little Rocks airport isn't known as Walmart International.

That's because Bentonville is a couple hundred miles away in the Northwest corner of the state next to the MO line.

Wal-Mart runs that entire economy up in that part of the state.

Bentonville seems fairly close to Tulsa.

If I'm a vendor visiting corporate to beg for shelf space, is that where I'd fly into, as opposed to Billary Intl?

2013-05-04 02:28:46 AM
Hil is from Illinois, isn't she? She has had a heavy influence on the state, being a high profile lawyer and then first lady, founding charitable organizations, serving on walmart's (and many other) board of directors, trying to reform a broken education system, etc.

Also, Walmart's airport is in Cave Springs, outside Bentonville. XNA. There is also a cargo airport nearby, i think. It's important because Walmart's makes all their vendors come to them and they send buyers out to all around the world to bring back and analyze products by the pallet, as well as moving personnel.
I don't think anything but private planes and airshows are done at Drake Field here in Fayetteville anymore.

Well, i guess Drake Field might technically be in Greenland, but that town barely exists.
