Aww, look. It's the token thread Nihilist.

That makes the holocaust okay, right, because the Germans were just killing people?

I'm just trying to figure out the acceptable means of killing people which is making me more confused.
So bullets are ok.
Chemical weapons are not.

borg: Lsherm: So no airspace violation, which I assume means missiles of some sort.

I find it hilarious this wasn't considered serious when CNN broke it, but now that MSNBC is reporting it, it seems legit.

The CNN story was green for 20 minutes and had three comments before being pulled.

Even funnier is that an Israeli news outlet is using CNN and a tweet by Lindsey Graham as their sources for this story:

Eh, Syria's not in any position to strike at Israel, what with their whole revolution thing happening.

The biggest danger coming out of this might be increased threats from Iran against Israel, but again, I don't know that they're stupid enough to attack a country that they know will bring the American hammer down on them. The president aside, most of the actual rulers of Iran understand that they don't want an actual war with the US, because they'll get smacked down hard.

I meant to say "a tweet that quoted Sen. Lindsey Graham". But seriously, they are getting their own news secondhand? wtf?

Pretty simple. Assad is a secular strongman. He and his father have used extremely violent tactics to suppress opposition.

The opposition is radical Muslim fanatics. They have been put down by Assad many times. Thomas Friedman describes Assad's philosophy as 'Hama rules', a reference to the destruction of the Islamist hotbed town of Hama when it tried to rise up against Assad's father.

So you support the strongman or you support terrorists. In a way it's Iraq all over again. If the strongman goes, the radical extremists take over. If the strongman stays, human rights violations will continue.

There's no good reason to get involved.

To be fair the phrase has been around a lot longer than Alex Jones. And it's not exactly unprecedented for a nation to gin up a reason for a war (not that I'm in any way implying that's the case in this instance).

You're missing the point.  Collateral damage happens with bullets, yes.  Of course.  No one said it didn't.  The main purpose is to take out who is shooting at you.

The point is that chemical weapons take collateral damage on purpose.  They are truly weapons of mass destruction and there is a reason they've been outlawed.  Does someone need to post the photos of the dead Kurdish babies?

Killing is bad, by the way.  I'm just explaining the difference between conventional vs. chemical weapons.  I do have somewhat of a scorched earth policy, but I don't like seing dead innocent families.  I'm not sure where you got the "killing is good" bit from.

Poison gas kills every farking thing in the general area - friend, foe, and neutral and keeps on doing so for hours or even days.

Not to mention that gas is one of the most farking hideous ways to die known to man.   Mustard gas can take up to 3 (excruciatingly painful) weeks to kill you.  There's a reason every single country involved in WWI signed on to a ban on the use of chemical weapons - because that shiat is so farking scary that nobody wanted it used against them.

If you've got a strong stomach, Google for "effects of mustard gas".  And then keep in mind that modern chemical weapons make mustard gas (which is one of the oldest chemical warfare agents) look tame by comparison.

I hate to say it, but the only solution would be a massive economic stimulus, such as an adjustable-rate IMF loan to the final form of the Syrian transitional government, sending in Arabic-speaking Western experts as educators and engineers, get every member of the Arab League ass-deep in keeping the program steady, and have the IMF pull the rug out from under them if ethnic cleansing starts up again.

I suppose an ethnic cleansing mob could be dispersed by military-grade lachrymatory agents delivered via drone, but a sociopolitical solution is preferable.

Mustard gas is a blister agent. Nerve gas is just Raid Fast-Kill Low-IrritantTM for people. It also breaks down in the presence of water or sunlight. This instability is a main reason why verifying its use is so difficult.

Whereas mustard is so farking persistent that there's shiat in France that's still contaminated after 100 years, and that's not even counting the unexploded shells that get found on a near-daily basis.

Also, mustard gas can still kill / fark up your ass even if you're wearing a gas mask.   It basically melts flesh, especially warm moist flesh.   Like your crotch.  And you probably won't even notice you've been exposed until 8 - 12 hours after it happened and your junk is a mass of oozing chemical burns.

This war's buzz-phrase will be "Red Line", just as the Iraq War had "Weapons of Mass Destruction". Obama referenced it earlier in the week, stating that chemical weapons used on civilians would cross his "Red Line". The article here references it, stating Syria crossed Israel's "Red Line". It wouldn't surprise me if the eventual carpet bombing of Assad's remaining forces by the US is called "Operation Red Line".
