This happens to people more often than you might think. I mean, I was out driving one day and found myself in the country, out beside a shotgun shack in another part of the world. And what I realized was that I was behind the wheel of a large automobile, not inside mybeautiful house with my beautiful wife. And I had to ask myself at that point, well, how did I get here? It was like I was letting water hold me down, water that was flowing underneath the ground, and all I could do was look up into the blue sky and realize that my money was gone. And you ask, how do I work this? But it's the same as it ever was. That's what you realize.

Every Saturday morning I wake up in bed not remembering how I got home. I look out the window and the car's parked sideways in the driveway, broken whisky bottles on the ground beside the open driver's side door. A small child's wagon jammed into the rear wheel-well. My wife sobbing in the corner, my children afraid to look me in the eye. Neighbours looking shiftily at me, signing another one of their "petitions".

/well, off the the bar!

You may find yourself living in a shotgun shack. You may find yourself in another part of the world. You may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile. You may find yourself in a beautiful house with a beautiful wife. You may ask yourself, "Well, how did I get here? "

Cool story, bro. Now tell us the story about how you founded an influential New Wave band.

Cork on Fork: I used to drive 6 hours across New York to get to or from college, and it was pretty much all one highway that looked the same. I would routinely find myself 3 or 4 exits further than where I thought I was and not even realize it.

But that does not even compare to those nights when I would be driving home tired, and I would suddenly jolt into focus and realize I had just fallen asleep. That is downright terrifying.

*I*, for one, welcome our new rumble-strip underlords.

Cool article, very informative. It explains a lot. I still wish I knew where all this blood came from, and why I'm wearing nothing but leather chaps and a platinum blonde wig, but maybe that's normal for this too.

You're a psycho killer, aren't you? I'm not judging, life during wartime is difficult, it's not nothing but flowers.

I think I did that once.  Thankfully I woke up.  Anyway I was travelling on an Interstate highway through one of those "fly-over" states and after driving for quite a while stopped to fuel. Then continued driving.  For a couple hours or so.  The Interstate took a big turn to the left over a bridge which was probably over a big railroad switchyard.  Well at least a few tracks leading to a switchyard.  But I couldn't see it.  I was asleep.  I came awake just as I was ascending the ramp and about to leave the highway, immediately I swerved to the left and recovered in the right lane.

/that got my attention and I was able to continue to my destination
//or maybe it was a dream and there was a reason why my gas mileage was so low on that leg of the trip

Nothing so severe, but I have walked into a room on several occasions and wondered why I went in there.
