No we shouldn't. It's a terrible acronym, in fact. People use it not when they're actually laughing out loud, but only when they have nothing else to say and they're trying to remain friendly.

I hate it when I text someone and their reply is "lol". Either they didn't read it, didn't care, or don't have any retort (too busy, lazy, etc.). It stops the conversation right there. There's no followup. They might as well have said nothing at all.

Don't write it. Don't text it. Don't tweet it. Don't say it. Don't use it, ever. Either have something of substance to say -- in actual words, with constructive thought behind them -- or shut the fark up.

Or, you could just learn to write.

I love "lol", "omg", emoticons, etc., etc., but I use them exactly as intended - as shorthand, so I don't have to write paragraphs expressing nuance, framing sarcasm, or communicating emotion. That doesn't mean that they're somehow legitimatized as acceptable replacements in formal communications.

It sounds like your texts simply aren't that interesting; perhaps they're not the thought-provoking prose you imagine them to be.

Aw, man don't go knocking LOL.  It's the last vestige of the old internet.  Old IRC/haven/usenet/jargonfile slang like "prolly" and "newbie", "grok", "f*ckwit", "ROTFL" and "lose, lose" etc has all pretty much died. Can't we still have LOL?

/sigh, I'm old.

Prolly, newbie, grok and f*ckwit have all been adopted into spoken English. Anyone past the Ewok line prolly just assumes they've always been there.

That was a slab of vapid fluff, a verbally composed marshmallow, almost completely devoid of content or meaning, with just enough meringue to float by the copy editor.

THAT my friends is what we call "mailing it in."

It's the modern version of "Roger" or "Copy" from the CB era.

Or, "I heard that, good buddy" if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

LOL is an escape hatch used when you say something terrible to or about someone or something.   It allows you to be a dick and pass it off as a joke.
