50 times and he didn't even get his eye shot out (kid).

How many pumps for each shot?

Call me crazy... But I highly suspect he was shot with 50 BBs from a shotgun.  If you manage to hit someone 50 times with a BB gun, you're awesome and they're an idiot for just standing there.

I am sure the mean shot (which look like BBs) from a shotgun.  Which most people use to hunt turkeys with.

50 times with a BB gun or once from a shotgun blast contains 50 pellets (BB's)?

2013-05-03 08:31:58 AM
BB gun technology sure has improved since I was a kid. This must have been some rapid fire, machine gun type action to get off 50 rounds before realizing you were shooting at a person.

When I lived in Northern Michigan during the 70s and 80s, during hunting season hunters were required to wear orange vests to prevent that sort of thing.    And parents did not allow their kids to go into the woods when it was legal to hunt deer with a firearm.

2013-05-03 08:32:47 AM
It's called BB shot.
A common shotgun load for turkey hunting.
But why would city slickers be expected to know that?

This, it's a trollish headline. Still a big mistake on the shooter's part since they obviously didn't properly identify their target, but they didn't stand there for five minutes shooting the guy.

I suspect there is some confusion in the article between "pellet gun" and "bb gun" because I know how a freaking BB gun works and they do NOT fire 50 BBs at once.

50 Pellets?? It would take longer than this scene, even with fully automatic pellet gun.

The guy was using a shotgun with turkey loads not a bb gun. Someone post the media's guide to firearms again.

Must have been one of those fully automatic assault weapon BB guns that shoots pellets...otherwise known as a shotgun.

Perhaps an Airsoft gun?  They fire small pellets which I think are the same as 'BB's and the replica assault rifles usually have an electric or CO2 driven full auto mode.    Some can be modified to put substantially more force behind the shot than they otherwise would.

Turns out the do make a rapid fire bb-gun (magic starts around 0:56)

And this one fires 1000 rounds a minute.

While I know it's was proven this article sucks and the cop was shot with a shotgun with bird shot, it seems it quite possible to hit a guy 50 times with a bb-gun in pretty short amount of time.

Yeah, I usually hunt turkey with a modified airsoft gun. Way more simple than a stupidly complex weapon like a 12-gauge.

Article says BB gun, but I'm wondering if it's bad journalism, or if that is what those wacky honkies across the pond call a shotgun? Anyone know?

Regardless, the guy who shot him should be banned from ever hunting again (on top of whatever punishment he gets for shooting a guy in the face). You NEVER shoot at anything unless you are absolutely sure of what it is and what could be behind it.

Bingo! I used to bow-hunt, years ago. (Most of my family hunts - my parents still hunt, even though they're in their late 60's.) Casual hunters, particularly those using firearms, are a pain in the ass.

You can't wear an orange vest while turkey hunting, at least, not if you expect to get any turkeys.  Unlike deer, turkeys have excellent color vision.

That's why there is the campaign about "Stalking Stinks" in relation to turkeys:  Everyone is wearing camouflage so that the turkeys don't see them, and if you're chasing a turkey (ie., stalking one), and you come up on a clear shot on a turkey and you hear it gobble, or cluck, or putt, or whatever, you might just be shooting at a decoy and a camouflaged hunter in the bush near it.

On the other hand, if all turkey hunters called turkeys into them and didn't go chasing them, accidents like that wouldn't happen.

Displaying the "fan", the tail feathers of the turkey.  It's a typical pose for a successful turkey hunt.

I don't hunt, so I am a moron about things like this. When a shotgun is used to hunt, wouldn't it riddle the bird with shot, making it inedible? Isn't shot often made of lead, too?

A turkey gun has a longer barrel with  tighter choke.

What this means to a non shooter is that the shot keeps closer together in a tighter group for a longer distance. Turkeys are usually taken with a head shot so biting a pellet is less of a worry. Happens all the time with grouse and pheasant though.
