Staff claimed the buildings on the street have been targeted by lead thieves in the past.

Lead?  Really?  Why is there lead in the buildings, and why would they steal that instead of copper?  Or do they mean the lead theives, as in the top dogs who have other theives working under them?

Are you really asking that question?

Lead is worth money....and it is used on a lot of old buildings here in the UK for roofing...mostly for churches, where it was durable and waterproof!

Yes, lead is worth money, but you need an awful lot of it to be worth much of anything. 15-20 cents per pound, or $8.00 for a lead core battery (which is less than the $10 core charge you get if you bring it in when you replace it) Copper, on the other hand, $2-$3 per pound. I've NEVER seen lead used in roofs in the USA, maybe that's just a UK thing.

Does this ever work? I'm always reading these stories. Has anyone ever been robbed and said "hey, looks like he came down the chimney, robbed me and made his clean getaway (I am assuming they would leave through the door, not back up the chimney).
/except for Santa of course

Lead roofing. Watertight and malleable and durable.

Lead sheets used for roofing - very malleable, easy to crimp the edges together to make watertight seals.

So lead roofing has water running over it, which leads to lead in the runoff.  This goes to the water table, where it is diligently pumped back out for drinking water/irrigation, etc.  From there it goes into the Brits and the food they eat.

I think we've figured out the mystery of the British tooth problem.

Famous Thamas: the British tooth problem.

Well, if having healthier teeth than Americans is a "problem" then I guess we have a problem.  Or is the problem that we don't have a vain obsession with unnaturally white teeth?  Either "problem" pales in to insignificance when compared with a lack of wit so chronic that the only joke one can make is one stolen from the Simpsons and which has been parrotted at least 100,000 times on Fark alone.

http://www.kitcometals.com/charts/Lead.html begs to differ.  $.97/lb spot price at the moment.  The lowest it's been in the last 5 years is $.45/lb.
