Probably because the latter is consensual and the former isn't. I'd imagine that is the difference.

Technical trainee.  It means you are out of basic training and in tech school.  And hanky panky in tech school is not unheard of...to say the least.

Is an Air Force MTI always their version of drill sergeant?  The article mentions it was technical school, not basic.

Yeah, maybe...and you know, women can't consent when it's the male in charge, that's rape every time.

All snarkiness aside, this is a stupid rule and I don't understand why there would be 'time' in a sentencing of this nature. (Unless of course it was actually rape.)

I understand why there is a rule, I just think the punishment isn't appropriate for the 'crime'. Two consenting adults and only one gets jail time.

Dumb.

Just saying....hard to see from that photo
From bottom right to top left, in order of precedence:
Basic Training Ribbon
NCO PME School ribbon
AF Longevity Service (4 years service)
Long Tour Overseas
Short Tour Overseas
Something I can't tell but maybe Basic Training Insturctor
National Defense Service
Can't quite tell AF Recognition Ribbon
AF Outstanding Unit Award
Joint Service Maybe
AF Commendation Medal.

Totally reasonable if she was High Speed enough to be a training instructor

My sister was a Marine and she makes fun of me because of "all" the ribbons I had when I got out of the Army. I shrug it off because there needs to be a happy medium between the Marines (no one gets ribbons or medals) and the Air Force (ribbon and medals for everyone!). I left with 8 ribbons and a CIB. Enough to look like I've done something but not enough to be absurd.

Perhap Good Conduct Medal, but I can't tell for sure as it's a blurry shot and the USAF did away with the medal for a bit.  Don't think she'll earn a cluster for this 3-year period.

The ribbons and medals help one track the progress in their AFSC as a visual cue, I guess. Personally, I wasn't too thrilled with the AF Training ribbon for completing BMT or OTS. But I guess some officer and/or SNCO complained only outstanding graduates got ribbons so there you go.

I read that as circumcised. And I was thinking I really wouldn't want to get circumcised by my Drill Sergeant. He would not be gentle.

2013-05-03 09:17:49 AM
female drill sergeant"s"? I read about one.  She should be punished, and was.  I won't comment on whether it was the right punishment, not enough information.  But the Air Force has a long and storied history of sexual assault by men of women.  This was not sexual assault.  There may or may not have been sexual harassment and intimidation (the article doesn't specify).  But it's a stretch to use this one article to conclude that now the Air Force is totally favoring women and punishing men unfairly.

2013-05-03 09:23:43 AM
According to the article,

Allen was the 19th MTI to be court-martialed and the only woman implicated in a scandal that has ensnared at least 32 former trainees in less than two years. All but one of the trials has ended in a conviction. Six of the former MTIs were sentenced to bad-conduct or dishonorable discharges.

I think we need a sample size of more than one to determine whether gender-based discrimination occurred here, subby.

Hey, it's possible if you can be in the right places at the right times and impress the right people. I was an Army E-5 with four rows. It would have been five if I'd actually bothered to add the medals from Desert Storm.

But anyway...That female MTI knew the rules, and didn't bother to follow them ala "don't fool around with the trainees." Plus, if Air Force post-boot camp school is anything like Army, it's an environment of  teens and young 20 somethings who've finally gotten permission to socialize with each other after 8 or more weeks of "no nookie for anybody" in basic training. We used to call those romances "AIT Love."

For those saying the punishment doesn't fit the crime:
Fraternization is a VERY serious offense in the military. The element of possible intimidation or sexual harassment is a factor, but a lesser concern than perceived favoritism. The higher you get up the chain of command, the more serious it becomes.
Really she got off easy. They kick people out for this.
