As left leaning as they say MSNBC is, that network is more schizo than you think. They only go full left until around 6pm.

Yes, but we have a free press so we should hold them to higher standards instead of accepting bullshiat, misinformation, mediocrity, and commercials masquerading as news because other people have it worse.

On the bright side, most of them DO have their own version of Fox.

I always thought "other people have it worse" was a defeatist attitude.  Regardless of the topic.

It really, really is. It causes people to become compliant and malleable because instead of thinking "how can we make things better" they start to think "Well, we can't make things better so let's just settle"

Fox and MSNBC are partisan echo chambers, and CNN is where news goes to die.  There are real news outlets in the US that do have standards the rest of the world would like to be able to emulate.

None of us want our press to have less freedom. Many of us just want them to act more responsibly in exercising that freedom because a free society relies upon a press that accurately presents the facts.

Lucky LaRue: Fox and MSNBC are partisan echo chambers,

they are not equivalent. not by a longshot.

yes, msnbc has liberal pundits on after 6:00, but their news reportage is right down the middle. fox on the other hand ONLY reports news that helps republicans and hurts democrats. that is its raison d'être. it does this 23 hours a day. the only hour it doesn't is the hour shep smith gets. (i don't know how he still has a job there. i'm guessing he has pictures of roger ailes having sex with hilary clinton or something).

Yes, that's the classic "attack with your weakness strategy.

If you don't know how to do a little fact checking, all you have to do is look back at the 2012 election and see how surprised the Rs were when their "news" turned out to be nothing but spin.

You are obviously too partisan to debate the issue, so go on listening to the melodious echos of your own chamber that confirms your world view, and I'll just keep my eye out for people that want to engage in honest intellectual discussion.

Done in two.

Well, I don't want to stray too far from the news topic.  But when I think of the lessons we learn as we grow up they strike me as contradictory in this case.

"Mom, why can't I do X?  Bobby's parents let him do X!"  "You shouldn't compare yourself to other people."

And yet:

"I didn't get into states in Cross Country."  "Think of how many people who can't do as well as you did, or can't even run."

We have some hypocrisy.  It's OK to compare yourself to others to make yourself feel better, but not to cause you to strive harder.

I always go back to something Putin said about Bush when the press questioned Iraq, "Why doesn't he just fire those reporters?"

In this country, we take it for granted that the government cannot actively control the press.

Leading them like groupies....is another matter.

"Free Press" is just false creation of the Bilderbergers. In reality, they control everything we see and hear as "news". This elaborate ruse is to keep the population from learning the dark truth, that Cheers was cancelled because Ted Danson is an alien.

James!: There isn't 24 hours of news per day.

There is, but it's too much work to report on EVERY item that comes in on the newswires, so the cable news network pick five items and repeat them five times an hour, filling the gaps with baseless speculation and commercials for mobility scooters.

2013-05-03 10:02:08 AM
I think what a lot of people don't understand about the 24 hour cable news outlets, is
they probably have less than 10% news.  I quit watching all of the cable tv channels.
Even though I am conservative, I wouldn't give you 2 cents for any of them.
I use to watch Fox from 6pm to 7pm (central time).  At the end of the news show,
Sheppard Smith would say, "that's the news, the OPINION starts now".
99% of the shows on these outlets is nothing more than OPINION shows, talking heads
used to take up air time, unless something like the marathon bombings occurs.  Then
they can mix news with assumptions.
I get my "news" from various WEBSITES.  Fox, Msnbc, NPR, Pravda, Al Jazera, Bret Bart
and others.  How can you form an opinion on something, if you don't listen to both sides.
I also go to various overseas sites, to read views outside of America, to get a different
twist on things.

Indeed. If we're going to sit around reminding ourselves about how lucky we are to have a free press, maybe we should try elevating it to something more than republican agitprop, Wolf Blitzer making shiat up at random and Al Sharpton shouting nonsense at a camera.

It's just another freedom that the American public has so gladly squandered in its laziness and intellectual malaise.

2013-05-03 10:06:04 AM
I stopped calling them all the press years ago.  They are entertainment companies and that's just about it.  Taken as a whole they don't have the combined integrity of Al Jazeera.

Yea. Because 3 million disinformed idiots a week choosing to rot their brains in front of scripted propaganda has absolutely no effect on anybody else... I mean... it's not like they're allowed to vote without being properly informed and reasonably intelligent, right?

You could argue that interesting things are happening, but actual items of national news are rare and the three networks jump on them and fark them to death.  That takes probably 4-5 hours out of a week the rest of it is repetition and gossip.
There is plenty of newsworthy things happening locally, but nationally not so much.

2013-05-03 10:08:34 AM
The local Fox and NBC station are the same company. You can watch NBC go full wing-nut while Fox holds back.  You wonder if the NBC guys are auditioning for FOX News. Actually you don't wonder at all.

All we have is corporate control of the media instead of governmental control.   Thank god for the internet.

Back around the birth of Survivor, mixing news with the reality tv mentality solidified something I call "newstainment".  I rarely watch any of them.  I'd rather be unimformed than have to wade through all the crap drama for a few bits of news from those stations.

2013-05-03 10:11:30 AM
And yet the tinfoil hat brigade will continue bleating about how they are living in a tyrannical military police state.
Do me a favour, go to somewhere like North Korea and openly criticize the government or accuse them of imagined atrocities then come back and tell us how bad we have it.

Who made you the judge of what people get to watch?  Are you a wise wizard living in a tower granting the common folk permission to watch what you think is best for us?  Do you want to decide what everyone eats?  When we sleep?  How large our sodas can be?

Get off your high horse.  You don't get to decide for other people.  And that makes you mad.

My local television news averages a half hour program, with 2 minutes of intros and leadouts, 9 minutes of commercials, 9 minutes of weather and sports, 7 minutes of actual news and 3 minutes about animals. It is repeated an hour later. I think most countries can get this level of news by talking over the backyard fence to their neighbors.

Yea, yea. Come back when you have an argument that a second grader wouldn't be embarrassed to put forward. You can whine and biatch all you like, all you have to do is turn FNC on to see that it intentionally blurs commentary and news to push opinions on gullible morons as if they're facts. You can biatch about MSNBC's commentary-heavy lineup if you want, but at least it's clearly commentary.
