Remind me to speed past any cop in distress.

In my state, it is the law that drivers must reduce speed and move over to the far lane when passing by any kind of police activity.  You don't slow down and move over you get a *massive* citation.

Well, that wrecked police car won't fix itself.  Gotta get the insurance deductible met somehow.

Exactly.

What did they expect people to do, just zip right past a crash scene with police on the scene?

I live in a rural area and we only have state police, these guys drive around like they are shooting the dukes of hazzard, they are easily the most dangerous vehicles on the road most of the time.

Yup. If they are blocking a street off like in those pics with their lights on and standing around just ignote that thing about slowing and being cautious near emergency vehicles.
Fark cops. Stand on the gas pedal.

So what happened to the non-seatbelt wearing offender who started it all?  Did he get away??  Will the cops be scouring store and passerby video and pics to come up with a suspect they can post on the internet????

Certainly no James Bond.

Maybe they should have handed out recruiting info as well as tickets. And donuts. And french fries. And BBQ. Usually the weight of the officers keeps the car from leaving earth's gravity.

Cousin was a Memphis cop.

mwfark: Tickets for slowing down? Way to lose the respect of your community, which pays your salary, stupid cops.

Sorry, but living here, not really unique to this event. Slowing down to gawk at a wreck will get you pulled over in a heart beat in Memphis.

You see, the cops here got tired of seeing firefighters run over, pumpers/ambulance/squadcar crashed into, and one wreck turning into six or seven because everyone wants to slow down and take a damn photo.

Elvis Presley Blvd is not a small side street. It's a six lane, main thoroughfare through the south part of the city.

On the other hand, MPD having a fail of such spectacular proportions doesn't surprise me. Six months ago, they killed a family of three by having one of their rookies blow through a red light, without even having his lights and sirens on (which would have still been illegal to blow), going 90 miles an hour on a 35mph street to a non-emergency call. The guy that responded then had the nerve to ticket the one surviving member of the family for "pulling in front of him" when that family had the green light.

Two months ago, an off-duty MPD officer was arrested for flashing a gun at someone, and then when that person called 911, the off-duty cop got one of the dispatchers to give them that guy's name and number, and he showed up at the guy's house and tried to fight with him. At least they did the right thing there and fired both the off duty cop, and the dispatcher.

I'm guessing they were slowing down to laugh and take pictures.

2013-05-03 09:16:54 AM
I'm gonna go waaaaaay out on a limb and guess that he chased the guy because he ran, not just because he wasn't wearing a seatbelt.  When you flash the blue lights at someone for a simple seatbelt violation and they take off, I'm guessing it's not solely because they want to avoid a $20 ticket.

I don't live in a rural area but the last two times I came closest to getting in a wreck were because of police cars (that didn't have their lights or siren on).

Came to say this. It's "guy wire" not "guide wire". I mean, for all intensive purposes, I understood what the writer meant. But we still need to reign in these grammatical mistakes. I could care less, but it's a doggy dog world for journalists out there. This guy had better hone in on the right meaning soon or he'll be an escape goat at the Daily Fail.

YouSirAreAMaroon: Wtf is a guide wire and how does one catch it?

That's a damn fine question.  If only there were some GUY we could get on the WIRE to answer it.

On a side note, if he was "chasing" this other car, he was doing so because it was running.  At that point, it's irrelevant why he turned on his lights in the first place.

//Still a dumbass for riding his car up a guy wire onto a utility pole.

The best time to speed is when you pass a cop that's pulled someone over. What are the odds that two cops are patrolling the same area?

I'd have jumped out and asked them why they were allowing traffic within 200 feet and ordered them to shut down the roads until an engineer from the power company cleared them to re-open,

Those dicks were just standing round inside an electrical kill-zone on the clock doing nothing but writing tickets?  Fire them!

It's "guie wire", phyrkrakr, learn some phrincx!

Wow.  Un farking believable.

I tried to google it and apparently cops killing peopel with their cars and not going to jail is a pastime there...

That isn't the "right thing".  The "right thing" is arresting both of them.

It is pretty sad whn cops getting a smaller break than average is the "right thing".

That is also the law in Tennessee. In this case it was just cops being embarrassed and punishing people who saw them fark up.

We have a similar law here in TN.  Move over of if you can't move over, you have to slow way down "Proceeding with due caution, reduce the speed of the vehicle, maintaining a safe speed for road conditions, if changing lanes would be impossible or unsafe."  First, second, third offense is a minimum of $100, $500 and $1,000.

Still, though, it's very annoying when people slow down just to look at a crash.  I've even seen it happen when the vehicles came to rest off the side of the road on the other side of the highway.

Same in mine. They really want you to just speed right by a car barely propped up out of the road? I would slow down just to consider turning around if it were me, not to say I wouldn't look and laugh though.
