Working at a University here is scary, they have a budget surplus but are cutting higher education just for funsies (after cutting over 25% already in the last 5 years already).

And they have only been at this for 4 months so far... there's a long road to go before they can get kicked out.

I've pretty much always been against the idea of voting straight ticket on either side, but I think these past 4 years will have turned me into a giant hypocrite by the time the midterms roll around. I honestly can't think of one R who I could vote for at any level who would not cause me to worry about how they plan to fark up the city/county/state/country.

I'd just like to slip in a factual correction:
54% of voters voted for democrats
45% voted for republicans
That's not 3x as many.

But in spite of those margins, the resulting representative count was 9(R)-4(D).  A minority gets to create a super-majority.

It's anti-everything. It's worse than corruption as corruption is usually done before closed doors. It's worse than a Banana Republic, as those countries make no attempt to call themselves a democracy.

I lived in NC for several years. To a Yankee like me, it was the sane and moderate of the south, the Marilyn Munster of the south. In recent times, there has been a deliberate attempt by the GOP to turn it into South Carolina or even Mississippi. I would call that "anti-learning". It's a sad day when the great state of North Carolina tries to compete for its own Fark tag.

I do recall at least one instance back when Tip O'Neill did a similar trick for a piece of iffy legislation in the US House; but that was more than two decades ago.

The simplest way to prevent this sort of shenanigan would be for the House to amend their rules to prohibit voice votes, even in committee; only marginally less simple and less disruptive, make a rule that there must be unanimous consent to have a voice vote even in committee, or that a motion and second can require a recorded vote.

See, there's your problem right there.  How the hell does a party that so closely resembles the KKK and the Michigan Militia even get that many votes?  I know we're a two-party, winner take all system, so we tend to think of it as exculpatory any time the malevolent side loses, no matter how small the margin.  But seriously, 45 percent?!  Forty-five percent of NC supports the Republican vision for their state?  To me, that's a sign of a serious cultural problem that runs deeper than any political or structural considerations.

Because all the ads around election time were anti-Obama.  They weren't "I'm Joe Smith and I'm running on this platform because.."  It was all anti-Obama.  Those that were in line with Obama received negative ads saying how much they voted with Obama on something.  "Paid for by prosperity for a better America"

But Republicans do not HAVE 2/3 of the House. The entire reason that they have been avoiding using roll call votes is because they did not have the votes to make the laws immediate effect.

different state but same idea and done for the same reason.

the backlash from this when it comes, and it will come, is going to be really ugly.

Nope, it's not that, it's just that hateful racist, and ignorant morons vote with significantly higher regularity than everyone else.  They did manage to get a scant majority of North Carolinian to vote for Romney, so non-straight ticket morons existed too.
