On one hand it is inappropriate to cause injuries to students, even blisters.

On the other hand, it's just freakin' blisters and some dirt. "*sniffle* they were all black and hurt" yeah no shiat. I've seen girls younger than you tear their knee open and bloody falling on gravel, get up and ignore it, and keep playing whatever they were playing.

Can't stop staring at pink suit....

Do you buy a suit like that at a pimp store and you ask them to alter a pimp suit to a regular single breast with a wide lapel, or do you go to a suit store and ask for a regular suit in pimp colours?

Seriously, after after the bruises, cuts, smashed fingers, etc from football practice these kids would have been down for the count. Running Indians, suicides, or green bays till you puke or pass out. God even two-a-days...ugh...I hated those...Track practice was a cake walk compared to football.

Why don't you try not missing practice, girls?

Yeah, but it was bruises and cuts purposely inflicted by Sadists as punishment. Not normal accidental injuries. Big diffrence there.

Not really,  we did all sorts of nasty stuff as punishment. We were always pushed to the edge. Was it to much in this case? Sounds like it. But some blisters are not some major story. Make the coaches apologize and if they ever cross a line again fire them. But this is not that big of a deal.

Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach, teach gym.

When Tammy Rulfs picked up her injured daughter after the next track practice, which included those backward bear crawls, she couldn't believe it.

"Honestly I would like to see the coaches do exactly what they had to do - and lose their jobs," said Rulfs.

I'd be okay with that.  I'm thinkin' they just wanted to stare at the girls' asses up in the air as they did "backwards bear crawls".

"It's a hard workout and they didn't intend for us to get hurt," said Sycophant.

But they did let you get hurt, didn't they, toady?

Shepard missed practice for a prom meeting. He didn't have the blisters some students did.

Oh.  Only the whiny girls got hurt, then?  Fair enough.

They got their widdle hands cowered in bwisters!

I think the workout is a great idea and a good punishment (though I'm not sure it should apply to someone with a Dr's appt).  Next time they should just supply work gloves for those who do them.

2013-05-03 12:15:20 AM
FTFA: Most of the track team members, though, said they stand by the same coaches who doled out a painful punishment.

"These coaches care about us so much. They didn't intend for this at all," said Solik.

(*sigh*) If these kids really believe this nonsense, then they got what they deserved.

It's hard to remember for me, but I seem to remember doing something similar although I think it was on a gym floor not a track which would have a much rougher surface. I am pretty sure we had a different name for them too.

I see the requisite "back in my day" and "snowflake" comments have been made. It's simultaneously hilarious and sad how quickly the internet wants to find a way to justify hurting kids.

Bad judgment aside, the bear crawls are just plain counterproductive. Moving that way is only going to risk back strain and other injuries that would potentially WEAKEN a person's track performance. If they'd just stuck with laps, no one would have cared.

Police are authoritarians, too.  They're agree that this was a "good punishment."

Hands are pretty important. For stuff like writing and typing. Building stuff. They haven't been used for walking for millenia.

They did this for half a mile. On a cinder or concrete track. Probably not those college tracks with the rubberized surface. Regardless. Totally unacceptable to f••k up someone young teenagers hands like that.

I can understand punishment, so make them miss a meet or run extra laps. You know, with shoes on.

Half a mile of that. Young teenagers. That's extremely poor judgement on the part of the coaches.

Leather-palmed work gloves are great at preventing blisters. Damned uncomfy in the summer though.

That sentiment really doesn't apply to this case.  If you read the article, the kids were defending the coaches.  It was the parents and administrators that freaked out.

If that's abuse then I know several people in my military training that are going to jail.  Bear crawls on a track is nothing compared to bear crawls though Fire Ant infested terrain.

Don't you get it?  Athletics are absolutely the highest priority in America.  If we can't run several times in an oval, hit a ball with a bat, or throw a ball through a hoop, how on Earth are we ever going to beat China to Mars and get those iPads made right here in America?

one of my best buddies is a middle school football coach gym teacher in a southern state, and heads a team that wins lots of middle school football contests (look, I ain't a sports chick, I'm trying to explain a thing, here). He is one of the sweetest, sappiest, most good-hearted fellows I know. When it is late summer, and the temps are busting records and we're in a drought, yet it's more humid than should be allowed by the laws of all that is good and holy...he turns into gotdamed Hartman. he refuses all arguments that 13 year olds can't handle laps in 115 degree heat. I know they have water, etc etc...I can't help it. I think he's mean.

2013-05-03 12:27:14 AM
Coaches are hard on you in order to make you want to try harder. That's their job. If it happens to involve some minor non-scarring skin lesions then that's what it will have. If you don't like it then don't send your precious snowflake into high school sports (and especially not beyond that level) or they may scrape a knee. Sports are not academics. Not everyone can be good at them no matter how hard they try nor how dedicated they may be.

They did that IN REVERSE.  Meaning, their hands were the pushing force, not their feet.

I still say the coaches did this to look at their asses.

Yeah, you never ran track, did you?

Two laps around the track is 800 yards, not 50 yards.  Even at your "2 a days" you were doing 1/8 the distance they did.
