sherpa18: professional_vampire: sherpa18: professional_vampire, paging professional_vampire to the thread. I have a question regarding a botched blood draw. / yes, on me
The vampire is here - how may I help you this evening?

*WARNING - WALL OF TEXT*
OK, so I finally had to go to the doc today so that I can get my pills. I fought the blood test since I no longer have health insurance and they charge outrageous $$$ that I don't have. The doc was insistent, but worked with me so that it will cost less than usual (or so he says, I will see when I get the bill).

Anyway, normally I barely feel the prick of the needle, but this nurse made me actually yell OWW! Put the gauze over the puncture, held my arm up (I don't do band-aids/tape as it makes me break out) and finish up with the doc and stuff, and I'm getting ready to leave when I notice a huge blood filled lump at the puncture site. Asked the nurse WTF? and she tells me I did not apply adequate pressure for at least 1/2 hour. WTH? I have never held it for more than 5 minutes. So they get the doc and he was like, yeah, you are gonna have a BIG bruise. They gave me an ice pack and told me to keep it pressed hard against the lump. Luckily, I am used to driving with one hand, so I kept it pressed on until the cold pack melted, and then put on another one with an ace bandage when I got home. The swelling has NOT gone down, and it is already turning colors. And it is sore.

Is this something I have to worry about? (I asked at the doc's office, and they said if I had a problem to call them. Um, your office closes in 15 minutes and my doc is leaving on vacation tonight). Should I keep the cold pack on? The ace bandage? And are we in agreement that that nurse has no idea how to draw blood?

[i415.photobucket.com image 340x512]

Ouch!  Yes, keep going with the cold pack - it will help the bruising and swelling go away faster, but your arm will resemble a deranged rainbow for several days.  Using the ace bandage or not is up to you - pressure is good to prevent bruising but I'm not sure how much good it will do after the bruise is already there.  And yes, I'd say that the nurse shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a needle!

John Buck 41: yobbery: John Buck 41: yobbery: Hi guys, how is everyone's Monday?

I cut the dickens out of my thumb today with a carpet knife. I finally found a good use superglue. Once I stopped the bleeding I placed a fine bead over the slice and spread it around a bit, then went right back to work. GOOD AS NEW! Like it never even happened.

[www.smugmug.com image 500x401]

Wait, what is that? It feels like...no. I'm sure of it! My leg! Someone's pulling it!

I'm serious. It was deep, but not bad enough to need stitches. I'd still recommend against trying to re-attach a finger with it, that's best left to the professionals.
I figured it does a good job of gluing two fingers together....why not one?
[www.smugmug.com image 300x450]

Ok, I'll take your word for it.

Guy I used to work with used super glue any time he got a cut on his fingers. I thought he was kidding me the first time he asked for some.

Nope, no legs pulled here! Just Mr. Iggs snoozing.

Sherpa, I had that happen once too. Went clear through my vein into the other side. My arm from almost my armpit to down past my elbow turned all kinds of shades of purple and blue. HURT LIKE HELL!!! You won't die or anything, but it will make you uncomfortable for a few days.

I'd swear it's only been a week or two since i last said hello. they all kinda blended together for some time and i never remember that it's caturday until too late at night for me. then, i never grab the computer to sit in the kitchen while hubby sleeps on sunday. my laptop gets warm, i don't like holding it. the battery is kinda crappy and doesn't always charge. sometimes hubby simply takes over the laptop and i don't ever argue about it.
excuses, i have so many of them.
back to the lurking now. real updates soonish i should hope.

Or go to a lab (Quest, LabCorp, BioReference etc) since blood drawing is all we do all day every day so we're pretty good at it.  :-)

That's why they're known as Bloody Mary's.

I hope it was sharp (you don't want to get sliced by a dull Bloody Mary) and that the pain subsides soon :*(

Here, have a cookie, it will make you feel better.

Sherpa18 me Mum, who was a medical technologist in a former life, and who has craptastic veins says, ice. 20 mins on, 20 off. Then Tylenol for the pain..and in 24 hrs use a hot pack on it. I will add rub the sucker..helps to distribute teh blood. It works. Took me from baboon butt to holy heck thats a bruise in less than a week. And I hurt a hell of a lot less. Ask any one who has done bad things to their tailbone.. Anything that helps you heal faster is golden..and yeah, she says the nurse is on the do not draw list...

yes, yes i am. more hours at work, family close by and a babysitter with a cousin close to babes age for her to "learn" from. it's just a little odd having customers comment on the car plates and then asking what i'm doing here. "But Maine is so nice" they say. apparently everywhere but there.

Going to scoot off to bed now. For some reason my "good knee" is very unhappy.. Read very painful. I have taken meds. Several glasses of wine. Still hurts. So, to bed I go. Maybe it just wants to go to bed!

lilyspad: sherpa18: Sounds like maybe they went through the vein, and the blood accumulated on the other side. Keep icing it with slight pressure. Your whole arm will probably turn purple and hurt like hell for a few days. I would suggest rum and ibuprofin for the pain. (HUGS)

tigerose: Sherpa18 it is a hematoma, and the nurse went thru the vein. It is gonna hurt like a Son of a Bleep! For a while. Ice is good. Other than that? IDK. I will ask me Mum. She has had boo koo issues with veins. Ans she was a med tech, so she knows veins..she told me that you should only allow a tech/nurse two tries to get blood. Then demand someone else.

professional_vampire: sherpa18: Ouch! And yes, I'd say that the

As always, my Caturday family comes through! (we seem to have people who are experts in whatever might be needed) . While it is just sore and not really painful, I was more concerned with the swelling - it looks like the grandaddy of all blood blisters (and naturally, my deranged mind was imagining it exploding in a spray of blood in the middle of the night). I just feel better since it seems that the consensus is that I am not insane (well, the white one might differ with you on that one) and the nurse/tech farked up - which truthfully was my issue - being told that it was MY fault for not keeping pressure on it, and "it happens" etc. Anyway, thanks again to all you wonderful people...I love you guise.

Hell, I know that (it also prevents your blood test results from coming back with wacky values due to dehydration). I even had my trusty bottle of water when I went to the doc's office. Maybe next time, I'll bring a bottle of rum and diet. :o)

Calling it a night. Gotta watch the drama on FB:
A friend of mine has been dating this "DOOD" for about 20 years (no, it's true...20 years) and he's freaking out, drunk posting and all but calling the wedding off. Again. Very undudelike. It's been off and on so many fornicating times I can't keep count.
*soap opera music*
"Will our wayward couple ever reach the wedding aisle...or will their love drown in the riptide of sorrow? Stay tuned for the next episode of "Dude: The Groomzilla Days." *organ music fades*
I'm glad I live alone with four cats. Jeez!

yobbery: Hi guys, how is everyone's Monday?

Nice werk!  Good first aid is very important.  Hope it heals fast.  Hope the carpet is OK too.

As for my Monday, FARK IT ALL TO HELL.

The fire alarm system in our building is malfunctioning, so we got three false alarms last night.  A mere pain in the ass for us, but terrifying for Buddy.  Shaking, panting, panicking.  Took nearly an hour to calm him down afterwards, and each time we'd just get settled, the godforsaken thing would go off again.  Sleep?  What's that?

This morning we decided to poke at the funny looking bulge growing in our kitchen ceiling.  This time it ruptured, splattering wet drywall bits and crap all over us!  Big mushy wet spot up there, disturbingly close to the light fixture. Jesus Farking Christ.  Repairman to come look at it tomorrow, but not sure when.  He will conveniently already be in the building to rip out the walls of another suite (not really near ours) that had a pipe burst.  Talked to nice old lady upstairs to see if her sink overflowed or something, but she says not.  So probably an under-floor pipe problem.  Now must frantically clean kitchen before repairman gets here.

But the worst part of all is, Buddy isn't doing very well.  He stopped eating pretty much as soon as he finished taking the prednisone last week.  On Friday vet decided to put him back on it at a low dose.  That helped marginally for about a day.  Now he's eating the equivalent of about half a meal per day, where he'd normally have two full meals and one light meal each day.  Still drinking an adequate amount of water.  Just won't touch food.  I've tried about 20 different kinds of dog food over the past week or two, fresh chicken, tuna, salmon, tripe, scrambled eggs, cooked veggies, chicken soup, baby food, etc etc.  Anyway, tonight, the little he's been eating has started coming right back up.  Called vet's office because I don't know what to do.  They said to bring him in tomorrow.  Made an afternoon appointment, on my best guess that the ceiling repairman will probably come first thing in the morning.  Please wish us luck.

I'm so worried because Sarah quit eating when she was winding down just before she died last year.  Her refusing to eat was part of her message to us that she was ready to go.  Buddy's pretty sick, but that tail still wags, that tongue still kisses, he enjoys his walks and his cuddle time so much.  He seemed quite chipper and happy on our nice sunny walks today, but when we're home he either sleeps or hides the rest of the time. I don't think he's ready to let go, there must be something we can do, I am not ready to let him go!  I want to do right by my boy, but he needs to have every last shot at comfort and happiness first.  Please send my boy some healing vibes.

So yeah I'm a nervous wreck.  Sorry for the long post.  Don't know what to do with myself.  Perhaps I'll go take it out on my messy kitchen.

All I can say is take it one day at a time. I know that is not much consolation, but that is what I am doing with the white boy... we know that all good things inevitably come to an end, but that does not mean we have to give up... We are all here for you.
