I say this in every Ted Cruz thread where people make him out to be an ignorant fool:

Ted Cruz isn't dumb. He's Ivy League educated and knows exactly what he's doing, knows exactly which buttons he's pushing and why. He understands that the road to power in the GOP these days goes through Derpistan and he is playing to that crowd and they are loving it.

For these reasons and more he is dangerous as hell and should be viewed and treated accordingly.

He may be an amoral, soulless farkstain on the bedsheet of humanity, but underestimate this guy at your own peril.

Which is part of the reason a lot of the GOP is pushing him and Rubio.  They just think that Hispanics of Mexican decent will just fall over themselves to vote for another Hispanic.  Because all Hispanics are the same.

I hear this a lot, but really, what national election has an avowed derper ever won?  He's only a Senator because he's from Texas, and I am not sure how much longer they will have him.  Bush had to mouth things like "compassionate conservative" and baaarely won.  The country has become fully aware of the extremist wing of the party that Cruz belongs to, and rejects it by a large margin.  Cruz is not going to "attract Hispanics" to the GOP, and he'll frighten off anybody left in the middle.  I suppose their is some set of conditions that is scientifically possible that would get someone like Cruz elected President, but if they happen, we're screwed beyond repair anyway.  Guys like Cruz get some attention because of some personal charisma with the base, but it nearly always fades under scrutiny and is non-transferable to the general electorate.

You know nothing Jon Snow Ted Cruz.

2013-05-02 04:10:06 PM
Money quote from FTA -

One Republican who has worked with Cruz fumed: "He's supposed to be the new Cicero, yet when you hear the guy speak, it's basically 47 minutes of one political cliché stapled to the back of another. 'We need to stand for freedom.' Well, great, but what the -- does that mean?"

The Cruz boomlet is caused exclusively by the fervent desire of the nutcase wing of the party to have a "smart" charismatic champion (regardless of whether anyone else finds him to be so), and the usefulness of this meme to the media to preserve the fiction of a viable GOP candidate for President.

They say that Ted Cruz once shot a guy in Waco just to watch him die.  But he got distracted at the last minute and he missed.  His friends tried to describe it to him but it just wasn't the same.

I don't think he want a national election, he is smart enough to know the legal issues of his birth, but a national stage, pundit job I think is his desire.    I think Palin is his role model, made a metric ass-ton of money of the true believers, makes more off public appearances where all she has to do is say "oh, scary libs" and hold up a big gulp and is cheered.

None as far as I know. However as far back as Nixon every Republican president threw red meat to the right before moving towards the center for the general election. Once you have proven yourself derpy enough the far right will accept you as someone with a good heart who's doing the right thing and you can say pretty much say and do anything you want for the general public and won't lose the right's support. See: Newt Gingrich.

You can't let it run through the whole election, that's the mistake Romney and McCain made. They thought a crazy VP would solidify their credentials but those VPs didn't know how to shut up and pretend to be not-crazy. They both ended up being bad for the campaign.

So if you want to win an election for President as a Republican the first step is to say a lot of crazy stuff early. The far right is more politically active and they'll remember you even though the general public will forget. As the actual primary gets close you tone it way down so that when the national media starts paying attention you can present the reasonable, moderate facade needed to win a national election. Cruz seems smart enough that he could actually pull it off.

He couldn't win a national election either.  And if Universal Healthcare inventor Romney and Maverick McCain couldn't successfully tack to the center after the primaries there is just no conceivable way Ted Cruz, who has never held anything close to a "moderate" position on anything can.

I don't doubt Cruz is a smart guy, in an Elmer Gantry kind of way. I just have a hard time seeing a political climate where he can inspire anyone besides the already converted.  He;ll get landslided if he ever gets that far, and I can't even see him getting a nomination.  It's not like the GOP needs any help to carry Texas, and they'd sort of like to have a chance in Virginia, Ohio and Florida next go-round (although fun fact - they still lose even if Mitt had carried those stats)

Their problem was they never captured the far right and their attempts to do it, by bringing on far right VPs, alienated moderates. If they had locked down the far right early they wouldn't have had to do that.

Perhaps in terms of adulation, but that dude isn't dumb like Palin. However, he is smart enough to know when to dumb down the rhetoric for the America Fark Yeah! crowd. With Palin it...sigh...it wasn't an act. When I first saw her speak with all the Real 'Murican small town stuff I thought, "Hey, this woman is good-looking and knows how to work a crowd into a froth. She could be a real threat."

Then I saw her try to give actual interviews.

I think Cruz, like Romney and McCain (and to a lesser extent, Dole) before him, thinks he can pull a fast one on "The Base" and pull off the primary pirouette. Smart people aren't immune to hubris.

Yes. These are the people who were holding up Bush's approval ratings at the end there. Once you're accepted as one of them it's really hard to lose their trust.

Well okay - but if locking down the far right's support early means you don't have to have a far right vp, it also means you are going to have an extremely difficult time appealing to voters outside your base, and there aren't enough votes from that group alone to win nationally.  There just is no way I can see Cruz peeling off votes from anyone else.

Lol. In some thread I used the line, "Excuse me, but "proactive" and "paradigm"? Aren't these just buzzwords that dumb people use to sound important?" (he had used "proactive") thinking that he would get the reference. Instead he had a temper tantrum and accused me of being an asshole who probably molests sheep. I kept trying to tell him, "dude it's a Simpsons joke but he couldn't let it go. Never saw him again, though, so maybe he got banned for being a dick and is now one of the thin-skinned alts we have now.
