Who the hell gives a shiat?

We nerds and geeks spend half our young lives being ostracized and marginalized and told that we don't belong, and then the minute we get a little bit of power and a tiny little corner of our own, what's the first farking thing we do? Do we open our arms for all people who like the things we like? Do we welcome women and newbies and people who just want to enjoy the spectacle? Do we turn around and show the world that they were wrong to treat us that way, because we are generous and strong people worthy of respect?

No, we turn around and give them what they gave us. We tell the women that they're attention whores and fake gamers, we tell the newbies they aren't hardcore enough, and we tell the people who just want to enjoy the spectacle that they didn't earn the right. We're farking ridiculous as a group, and I'm sick of it.

So what if a woman made a sexy costume of Scarlet Witch just to get some attention? You miss the fact that SHE PUT EFFORT AND TALENT INTO MAKING A COSTUME OF SCARLET FRICKING WITCH. Who cares if people there are only fans of the movie version of the Joker? They like the Joker! Who cares if someone is there who happens to have come because his girlfriend like anime, and he's not into it himself? He's supporting someone who likes anime!

It's a damn hobby. We as a geek culture are making fools of ourselves trying to exclude everyone who doesn't know the title of the fourth Season 2 episode of The Original Series. Just get over it, embrace people who like things, and try to be happy with your life.

You'll find it helps with your blood pressure, and you'll make more friends. Maybe even some cute ones in Scarlet Witch outfits.

More like "Cosplay: because we need our own word for dicking around in costumes and if we said 'masquerade' we might be mistaken for adults with no related neurotic insecurities."

The costume party is a human tradition that's shown up in every culture in history.  So is the random large-scale festival.  Calling it 'cosplay' at 'conventions' is just more of the stupid generational delusional bullshiat that our generation is the one that discovered dancing, music, drugs, and sex, and that no prior generation ever had any of those things.

Masquerade carries connotations of a formal affair, so that's really not quite the right word. I suppose that we could go with the less formal "costume party", but that has connotations of a small, private affair.

I don't think that there's anything "delusional" about calling it cosplay. I'm sure that you don't literally think that anyone really believes that dressing up in a costume is some new invention (and if you do, the problem is that your own sense of smugness is causing you to assume that everyone else around you is a moron -- and you really ought to stop doing that because it makes you an ass).

I think that cosplay is a perfectly fine portmanteux that captures the idea of a large, informal event where people dress up in costumes.

The reason that the English language tends to have dozens of synonyms for words is that it's very useful for conveying nuance. This is just another example of that and, much like the idea of costumes, isn't anything new or unique to this generation, nor is it anything to be deplored. It's just how language works.

...average looking girls in skimpy outfits is fine by me.

See, some of us like girls, in something other than approximations of real dolls or whatever.

Girion47: I keep waiting for pics of my sister to pop up in these threads, hasn't happened yet, but the way she designs her costumes, I see it happening sooner or later.

You should definitely post pictures of your sister on fark. That's never gone wrong before.

Unhip1: I find it sad that they're passing up on a golden opportunity:
The Hank Pym story.
Ant Man to Giant Man to Hercules to Yellowjacket
He created Ultron, TWICE
His wife had to deal with his mental state
He had numerous nervous breakdowns.

This would make for an excellent set of movies. The Scarlet Witch? Really? Did they totally gloss over the cannon and just look for more T&A?

A Hank Pym movie would be better suited to Lifetime, so they can deal with the wifebeating.
