BafflerMeal: R Kelly's Doo Doo Butter: I haven't read comics since I was a kid in the mid 90's, and was thinking about jumping back in. What's currently worth getting into in the marvel universe?

Hawkeye (yes really, My Life as  Weapon is awesome), Daredevil, Avengers, New Avengers (basically the adventures of the Illuminati), Indestructible Hulk (Banner is a WMD that works for SHEILD)

Hawkeye is not only one of the best comics marvel puts out, but one of the best comics I have ever read, by any publisher. And this is from a guy who was cursing the writer's name back when he was doing "Fear Itself".

I GOTTA get the back issues of this.  Hil-arious.
The art looks like the kind of stuff that made me drop Spider-Man in the early 600s.
I really miss the days of decent comic book art.

Who do you consider decent?  Linka few pics.  Different strokes for different folks and all that.
Darick Robertson
[www.coverbrowser.com image 420x657]
Leonard Kirk

Valentine De Landro

Russ Braun
[www.previewsworld.com image 425x632]

...and those are just a few still doing work in modern comics.
The scratchy stuff never did anything for me.

I definitely like De Landro's work on X-Factor.

On the 'scratchy'...  I may be influenced by the international stuff I've been reading.  For instance I love Luc Jacamon's work on The KIller and Cyclops:

[carnot69.free.fr image 592x800]

[www.page45.com image 850x697]

Well, actually, I take that back... the "scratchy" stuff has its place... books like Alias, Manhunter (both of which were drawn at some point by Michael Gaydos)... those are stories that work well with the kind of atmosphere that comes along with the scratchy, muddy colored art.

But Hawkeye and Spider-Man? Those characters deserve big, bright, splashy, comic book art.

Doesn't mater, the art works perfect for this book and this book is fantastic, Give it a chance. If theres any book you are going to enjoy its this one.

All this talk about Marvel movies got me thinking about other Marvel characters that could carry a movie. How about Slapstick? The guy is a living cartoon; kids will eat it up. Film it Roger Rabbit-style, that would be cool.

FirstNationalBastard: Cosplay: because average looking chicks crave attention, too, and if you dress like a comic book character fat geeky guys will supply the attention you crave.

More like "Cosplay: because we need our own word for dicking around in costumes and if we said 'masquerade' we might be mistaken for adults with no related neurotic insecurities."

The costume party is a human tradition that's shown up in every culture in history.  So is the random large-scale festival.  Calling it 'cosplay' at 'conventions' is just more of the stupid generational delusional bullshiat that our generation is the one that discovered dancing, music, drugs, and sex, and that no prior generation ever had any of those things.

Masquerade carries connotations of a formal affair, so that's really not quite the right word. I suppose that we could go with the less formal "costume party", but that has connotations of a small, private affair.

I don't think that there's anything "delusional" about calling it cosplay. I'm sure that you don't literally think that anyone really believes that dressing up in a costume is some new invention (and if you do, the problem is that your own sense of smugness is causing you to assume that everyone else around you is a moron -- and you really ought to stop doing that because it makes you an ass).

I think that cosplay is a perfectly fine portmanteux that captures the idea of a large, informal event where people dress up in costumes.

The reason that the English language tends to have dozens of synonyms for words is that it's very useful for conveying nuance. This is just another example of that and, much like the idea of costumes, isn't anything new or unique to this generation, nor is it anything to be deplored. It's just how language works.

OK, they're including Scarlet Witch and her whiny Flash ripoff brother. Good. They've already said (though I don't know if it's been 'officially' confirmed) that they're also including the Vision - AKA the Best Avenger.

This BETTER goddamn mean that they are including Ultron - who, along with Thanos, is one of my all-time favorite Marvel villains.

Your Milk and Cheese post has inspired me to finally put together a run of Dork! for binding, and led me to discover there was a Complete Milk and Cheese hardcover released after I stopped going to comic shops and giving a damn about most new releases.

Okay, some clarifications...

The original Human Torch was an android named Jim Hammond. He was active during WWII and then was deactivated until a couple decades later.  Jim Hammond was the man that killed Hitler. With his bare hands. It's implied he didn't use powers, either.

He had a partner with the same powers-- Thomas Raymond, a kid sidekick called Toro, who wasn't an android, but a mutant (one of the first prominent ones in Marvel's mainstream history).

Now, here's the real tricky area: It was believed that his body was used by Ultron as the basis for The Vision... But that's not entirely true. In actuality, the Human Torch remains used by Ultron were those of a copy of Jim Hammond created by Immortus (a time traveling villain). The Vision also has brain patterns borrowed from a few different people. Hank Pym recently said that the work Ultron did to create the Vision exceeded anything anyone on Earth understands about cybernetic life. Even Reed Richards didn't know how The Vision worked.

The real Jim Hammond was revived by the Scarlet Witch in an effort to learn more about her then-husband, The Vision (long story, there).  The last time we saw Jim Hammond, he was sacrificing himself to save others.

Now, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they DID have Jim Hammond on display in the beginning of the film at the expo Steve and Bucky were at with their dates. And since Captain America branched out to fight Hydra when they became the bigger threat, we might even be able to assume that Hammond (and maybe even other Invaders members) were still in active duty fighting Hitler at the same time.

It could be that in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jim Hammond was still the guy who killed Hitler, and that he will become the Vision. All we need to fill in the gap between the two is Ultron, and to get Ultron we really should have Hank Pym.

One thing about Hank and Ultron, though: Hank tried to explain that he didn't create Ultron-- Not the one the Avengers fought, anyway. His Ultron was just a great robot with a decent AI. It was Ultron himself who improved his systems, boosted his own intelligence, and rebuilt himself over and over again until he was far advanced from anything Hank could have created. Hank's point: Ultron really created himself.

How about "playing dress-up" ?

All I want is for them to ban cosplayer at comic conventions, and then make separate cosplayer conventions to keep them away from the scene. Furries have their own conventions. It's time we swept cosplayers out the door of comic cons and into their own attention-whoring freakshow.

I don't mind the origins of it: People who enjoyed the comics would wear a costume from their favorite character. But in the past decade or two, the cosplayers going to cons have been people who don't know jack-shiat about comics but show up to advertise their costuming skills, their bodies, or some other thing.

So just give them their own cons and ban them from the comic cons. Let's get cons back to the point where they're about comic books and creators, and not about the scantily-clad people who take advantage of the situation to promote themselves.

While his race does matter, you ahve to kind of decide if he was one of the pioneers of African American soldiery in the second world war, or if he got his start Viet Nam. Sam jackson would be a freaky Nick Fury if they had a movie with him and The Howling Commandos.
