EvilEgg: And here I was thinking that "I thought she was eighteen" wasn't a defense.

/turns out I was right, but "I thought he was eighteen" evidently is.

Haven't read the thread so this may have been covered, but it varies (in the US) by state. In some states, like Florida, you could have met her in a bar, seen her fake ID and get a sworn statement from her parents that she was 18. If you bang her and she is 16 you go to jail.

In most states if a reasonable person would have reason to believe she is 18+ you are cool.

CJHardin: The US is pretty strict and inflexible in enforcement of age of consent laws compared to a lot of western countries. Prosecution guidelines in the UK are, or were, along the lines of "We're really busy over here in the courthouse so don't waste our time on some dumbass whose girlfriend is a few months shy of her birthday unless there are other aggravating factors involved"

Just curious, where is the eastern/western line?

crzybtch: No one over 18 should be doing high school kids.

Because high school kids are such angels that they'd never hurt each other?  What's a teen going to gain by being coerced into sex with booze n' drugs by a 17-year-old instead of a 39-year-old?  Not that I advocate borking adolescents, but this has less to do with any sort of arbitrary age cut-off and more to do with how society deals with sex -- which is to say, America and Australia are competing with the Middle Ages.  By the time some 39-year-old has set up parties with booze & drugs with adolescents in tow, we've already all missed a chance to do anything meaningful about it.  Sure we can punish the pedo and maybe we should, but does that really strike anyone as a good means of preventing this sort of thing from happening again??

The law isn't good at protecting teenagers from being used for sex.  It never was, and while I do know some people who were traumatized by adults as teens, I know just as many (then) teens who were traumatized by other teens.  When someone is hurt I really don't give a rat's ass how old the perpetrator is, and to a certain extent the victim's age isn't all that important either.  Hurt is hurt.  Heck, I know one woman who was traumatized by sex at 20 because she just wasn't ready for it and got into an abusive relationship -- so much for age being some super-magical field of protection against sexual assault.  Emotionally, she might as well have been 13.  Maybe she's an exception, but she's still a victim.  What protects teens (and adults for that matter) are education and support, but god forbid you actually give a teenager a candid answer to a question about sex -- everyone will think you're a creep.

If teens are given all the information, support and communication they need to protect themselves, they'll be fine.  It grind my gears when people avoid this and focus on the perps because when kids are left to float in a vacuum of curiosity, they're going to get those answers from anyone willing to talk to them about it.  As a society, are we sure you want to leave this sort of thing to chance?  On the flip side, it just might turn out that some 16-year-old boy given all the education and support in the world will decide to fark a cougar anyway, but the difference between an informed decision and a manipulated one will dictate whether it's a fond memory or source of never-ending shame.

freewill: fozziewazzi: Or maybe she's just horny.

Incomplete theory. The puzzling part isn't that she's borking a bunch of dudes, it's that she's borking a bunch of adolescent kids.

Just about any woman, even a rather...undesirable one...could easily arrange this with people who actually know what they're doing and won't get her arrested. Instead she's targeting teenagers and is creeping them out with her fixation, even by the usually somewhat creepy standards of teenage relationships.

It takes a special kind of personality to want to stay in your teens as long as possible.

Or to want teens to stay in you...

dragonchild: Eh?  If they don't become obese, a lot of "unpopular" girls in high school are just late bloomers, and nerdy girls these days have no problems getting laid -- if they ever did.  Obviously this woman has issues that go well beyond just self-esteem, but as long as we're speculating, I'd bet my money that the best years of her life were when she was the Class President and Prom Queen at 16.  Now that she's getting old and not the center of attention anymore and never applied herself, she wants to re-live her high school days.  Something like that, anyway.

Stacy's mom has got it going on, but she seems to be stuck in 1985...

Debbie just hit the wall, she never had it all
One Prozac a day, husband's a CPA
Her dreams went out the door
When she turned twenty-four
Only been with one man
What happened to her plan

She was gonna be an actress
She was gonna be a star
She was gonna shake her ass
On the hood of White Snake's car
Her yellow SUV is now the enemy
Looks at her average life
And nothing has been alright

Since Bruce Springsteen, Madonna
Way before Nirvana
There was U2 and Blondie
And music still on MTV
Her two kids in high school
They tell her that she's uncool
Cause she's still preoccupied
With 19, 19, 1985

Even us in our early 30s-late 20s will be happy to oblige.

I am too lazy to google it out but perhaps the laws vary from province (or state, whatever they have)? I highly doubt the law allows men to be identified and women not to be under the same circumstances.

The whole age-of-consent thing is an oversimplification.  Find out if any harm was done and prosecute it.

"No, I loved it and I'm perfectly fine."  No charges.
"I didn't want to." Rape.
"He/she wouldn't let me end it." Harassment, stalking.
"It hurt."  Assault and battery.
"I'm having nightmares."  Civil matter, although we could criminalize it

I'll bet investigators, including jealous* parents and envious peers, harm quite a few minors who otherwise would be perfectly fine.

* By "jealous" I mean, "mine, don't touch," not "I wish I could fark my kid."  The latter is envy of someone who did.

US?
A new study by Sonja Starr, an assistant law professor at the University of Michigan, found that men are given much higher sentences than women convicted of the same crimes in federal court.

The study found that men receive sentences that are 63 percent higher, on average, than their female counterparts.

Starr also found that females arrested for a crime are also significantly more likely to avoid charges and convictions entirely, and twice as likely to avoid incarceration if convicted.

Other research has found evidence of the same gender gap, though Starr asserts that the disparity is actually larger than previously suspected because other studies haven't looked at the role of plea bargains and other pre-sentencing steps in the criminal justice system.

Just recently, two stories came out in the same UK news outlet (BBC) on gender and prison. They went something like this
Male prisoners in England and Wales must work harder for privileges such as TVs in cells, the government has said.

Inmates will be made to wear a uniform during their first two weeks in jail and their access to private cash to call home will be restricted.

----

Community sentences in England and Wales are to be made more "female friendly" in an effort to keep women out of prison.

Well, there are issues that people don't cover, ranging from males encompassing the most homeless, most suicides, lower numbers in college and graduate programs, most on the job injuries and fatalities, pressured to work more hours, and a lower life expectancy that all to often gets blown off by people pushing the "suck it up" gender trope.
