It's not inconceivable under any circumstances.  Unlikely, but not inconceivable.

2013-05-02 11:38:34 AM
They also said that Sarah Palin was going to be the nominee last time around and we know what happened.

2013-05-02 11:40:13 AM
I'm still pulling for Ted Cruz to get the nomination. The Democrats could nominate an inanimate carbon rod and practically sweep the electoral vote.

Rand Paul wouldn't make it out of the primary so this isn't an issue.

They fielded so many ridiculous candidates that Romney looked like the only reasonable choice?  This strategy wouldn't work for Rand Paul?  I mean, it won't win him the Presidency but it could certainly win him the nomination.

As an American, I would be very happy for the Republican party to cease being The Party of Stupid.

I'm not sure it would work.  We'd need to find 8-10 people dumber than Rand Paul.

WTF Indeed: Rand Paul wouldn't make it out of the primary so this isn't an issue.

People say this, but I don't think Rand Paul will stick to his positions. I think he'll change them if he's still considered a contender in 2016. He's only a man of principles when it's convenient, he's mostly just a hack who saw an opportunity to trade in on his father's ultra-libertarian reputation.

It's way too far out to be relying on polls in order to predict who the next presidential Republican nominee will be.  Three years is a long time for anyone to go without saying something blatantly racist or sexist or generally offensive to a large majority of the population, not to mention cheat on their spouse.

I am convinced that Rand Paul's (and Ted Cruz') national standing is based almost entirely on the fact that the remaining members of the GOP are desperate to find anybody with sufficient charisma to win a Presidential race, so much so that they really don't want to know the actual positions these men hold.  When forced to confront the idea that these two are actually batshiat insane, like the Cains and Perrys of the world, the support will vanish just like it did for 999 and Gov. Oops among the majority, with the remaining nutcases left to gnash their teeth all over again.

And if any contemporary politician might be willing to bet his political legacy on supplanting a wayward Republican Party with a new party, it would be John McCain. He has long branded himself a "Teddy Roosevelt Republican."

Oh for goodness sakes, if this guy thinks McCain is going to be the catalyst for forming a new party in 2016 at the age of '80 and two failed presidential bids under his belt, not to mention the unremovable stain of having hoisted Sarah Palin on the country, he's living in a friggin' dream world.

I really, really, really don't want Ted Cruz to get the GOP nomination. Even if, at this point, it looks like he'd be easy to defeat. Because there would still be the theoretical possibility he could be the next President.

There is something decidedly Greg Stillson-ish about that guy. He's not just nutty; he's genuinely scary.

Reagan Republicanism is dead as a viable political ideology and Libertarianism is going to be what replaces it in the Republican Party. Rand Paul isn't going to be the one to kick off that era of the GOP but he certainly could play the part of a Goldwater-esque harbinger

I don't know, the Republican nomination has been relatively predictable for a while now:

2000: Bush wins the primary, McCain is the runner-up
2008: McCain wins the primary, Romney is the runner-up
2012: Romney wins the primary, Santorum is the runner-up

If I were a betting man, I'd give Santorum pretty good odds of getting the nomination in 2016.

/and that's terrible
