Whatever you do, article, don't you dare try to explain what a WI is or what it stands for.

Don't bother Googling, it's not Wisconsin.

That is hilarious. How wonderfully insensitive of them.

Unfortunately the former hostage had a sense of humor about the whole thing and did not have a flashback while firing on the crowd.

Dressing up as ninjas would have been better.

They were doing their part to reduce global warming.

They reduced global temperatures by almost a tenth of a degree.

"I work in Walter Henry's Bookshop in Bideford and on the morning of the day the meeting when I noticed Colin Darch's book on the side and put two and two together. I thought "oh god, how awful!"

"By then it was too late, just thought we would have to go with it. It was lucky Colin was such a good sport.

Turns out those sweet old ladies were trolling him and knew exactly what was going on. Either that or their costumes were so elaborate they couldn't remove them with only a mornings notice!

Old ladies make embarrassing mistake and apologize to affected person.  Person accepts apology.  No one gets sued, life goes on, everyone is happy.  You know, like adults, instead of petulant children.  Refreshing change.

Women's Institute. So widespread and well known in England that nobody would ever bother to explain what it means. It was started as a support group/network for women in rural areas (the Scottish equivalent is SWRI, the Scottish Women's Rural Institute) and in developing their domestic skills. Which is not as patronising as it sounds, since a farmer's wife would often have been responsible for the dairy and curing meat as well as running the farmhouse and feeding family and farmworkers.

There is sometimes still a hint of domesticity about the WI, but it's an extremely powerful and non-partisan political campaigning organisation as well, and no sensible politician wishes to get on its wrong side.

They're women. They need at least 3 days notice to schedule an outfit change. My god man, what if they don't have the proper accessories? What if two of them show up wearing the same blouse? Now that would be embarrassing.

The whole website is that of the WI.  I suspect that the meeting described in the article was a WI Guild of Learners meeting.

WI may refer to:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisconsin">Wisconsin United States postal abbreviation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiesbaden">Wiesbaden, a city in southwest Germany
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netflix#Internet_video_streaming"> Watch Instantly, a video streaming service offered by Netflix
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_Climbing#Waterfall_ice_grading ">Waterfall Ice, the ice formed from a frozen waterfall
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Indies">West Indies postal abbreviation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Indies_cricket_team">West Indies cricket team, a term used in cricket statistics
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women%27s_Institutes">Women's Institutes, a locally organised group for British women

Googled and Wikipediaed.  From this point it's anybody's guess.

So in the US it would be some bastard combination of the 4-H, the League of Women Voters, and the Junior League?

Mistakes happen. This was hilarious, if you ask me.
CSB time:
A guy at work was retiring, and a Happy Retirement card was circulating for his co-workers to comment and sign. As is my usual practice, when the card got to me I put down "Good riddance".
Then another card landed on my desk a few minutes later, for the same guy. So I asked about what happened to the first one. Turns out that that original card was for someone whose mother had just died.

// Luckily, I intercepted it and scratched out the "Good riddance".

Heh. Seeing that pic of the old ladies dressed like pirates reminds me of the Monty Python bit about The Crimson Permanent Assurance.
