Jerry Maguire is one of the worst experiences I've ever had in a movie theater, including the time that drunk guy barfed three rows back.

I would have expected Breakfast at Tiffany's, Moonstruck, Sabrina, and Pillow Talk  on any list of romantic comedies.

And Notting Hill sucked worst than any Adam Sandler movie.

In what way is Jerry Maguire a comedy? Tom Cruise sleeping with women? That's just weird, not funny.

"His Girl Friday" is one of the funniest movies ever.

I watched "10 Things I Hate About You" with my teen daughter when it came out and we both LOLed. To this day we still say "I have a dick on my face, don't I?" when confronted with cluelessness.

I'm one of those people who just doesn't get Woody Allen. I watched some of Annie Hall, was not entertained or amused. Maybe I'm missing the "nebbish New York Jew" gene.

I always found You've got Mail creepy - well, the middle part where Hanks has worked out the central plot element and then starts manipulating Ryan's character, such as by appearing at their first date pretending not to be the guy she is emailing.

Silver Linings Playbook was a rom-com? If they're going to play fast and loose with categories, then I want Airplane! included on this list.

Jerry Maguire was physically painful to watch. Luckily it was a double feature with Fools Rush In, which was an order of magnitude better by comparison.

And 500 Days of Summer? I never got that movie, despite my deep love for Zooey Deschanel. Then again, I don't get New Girl, either.

They have a few legitimately good films with absolute dreck peppered in.

The Bad: Notting Hill, When Harry met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle
The Ugly: Pretty Woman, You've Got Mail, Hitch

"Romantic Comedies"....a term for cookie cutter chick flicks that all follow the same plot line.

Guy and girl meet, usually because they are thrown together due to extenuating circumstances. At first meeting, they don't like each other at all.

Time passes, girl starts to soften, guy drops the swagging facade and reveals his "sensitive" side. This is also where they introduce some aspect of the storyline where the guy is hiding something he knows will kill the relationship.

Relationship escalates, usually involving a few laps around the bed. Occasionally there is a slight bit of nudity as some sort of a lifeline to the poor guy being forced to sit through this torture just to get laid himself.

Twenty minutes before the end of the film, the guy does something to blow it. He's insensitive, she finds out his hidden secret, whatever, but it puts the relationship in jeopardy.

Three minutes of sappy music and images of the characters looking reflective follow.

Guy comes up with elaborate goofy plan to win back girl, which he does.

Roll credits.

Other key ingredients include each of the two main characters having a "best friend" that the other person doesn't like and who really doesn't get along with the opposing annoying best friend (think Elizabeth Perkins and Jim Belushi in "About Last Night), a wisened older person who dispenses freakishly sage advice to the dipstick who's blowing it with the girl, at least one dance sequence, all set against a sanitized surprisingly crime-free urban background.

Is that about it? Amiright?

She's most manic and pixiest of all the manic pixie dream girls.

I concur. I hate to admit this but there were a handful of movies on this list that are on my personal list of 50 most favoritist movies of all time. Not best films, just my personal choice if I could only have a library of 50 movies. Amelie, Roxanne, Eternal Sunshine... can all be found within my top 20.

The Romantic Comedy genre has been cheapened with slews of terrible movies making way too much bank at the box office. I blame Meg Ryan for this mostly. Even if she did give us French Kiss. Below are a short clip and a long review. Both worth a watch.

Slaves2Darkness: So, I've seen 16 out of 50 and over half of those I question the definition of rom-com.

Traditionally the definition was a comedy that centered around a couple or romance of some kind. It didn't even guarantee that the couple get together or stay together as long as they and the audience had fun for the duration of film. Now it's hard ass woman who's dedicated to her career but her asshole friends tell her that her life is incomplete unless she finds Mr. Right, runs into a narcissistic jerk, only for her to soften and then they fall in love after a series of misunderstandings. Right, because 2 narcissists will work out in the long run. Wouldn't want to see how those divorce proceedings go down.

Sarah Jessica Parker is a co-conspirator along with Meg. At least Meg has done some other types of flicks and even gotten naked a couple of times. SJP is forever entrenched in the "chick flick" world and pretty much taints the genre.

... I was not actually expecting Scott Pilgrim vs. The World to be in there. That was actually a fairly enjoyable movie. (And points out that *JUST* love isn't enough to make a relationship work.) I actually preferred the change the movie made for the 'second' power Scott Gained at the end (as opposed to the one from the comics.)

Though I did also like the theme of Nega-scott in the comics.

Thanks, but I kinda get misty eyed at the end, with the glove flying through the air as the snow begins to fall, and somehow lands on John Cusack. Then he gets up and after 5 years of wondering, she flashes a cute smile and gives a slight wave of the hand, cue "Northern Sky" by Nick Drake . . . aw damn it, I can barely see my computer monitor.

One of my all time favorite movies. Very transidental. I have managed to format it to every media playback device I have owned, it's even on this phone..

KatjaMouse: someonelse: LonMead: HA! They fooled you all! There are no "best" romantic comedies... only ones that are less bad than the others.

not bad does not necessarily mean good

This one never gets any love on these lists.

This. I loathe that movie, actually.

DammitIForgotMyLogin: macadamnut: Also, they picked all the wrong John Cusack rom-coms. I submit;

You can't expect a movie about luggage to get much respect.

Also, this list is already complete garbage without:
agreed 'A New Leaf' is comedy gold, and any Cary Grant/Katherine Hepburn comedy qualifies

The Apartment wasn't all that funny.  The first half was farcical and fun but the second half was pretty damn serious and dark.

This is one of my favourite movies of all time.  It was so effing wonderful.  This list fails because this movie is missing from it.

/also LA Story is really good.

How can you pick 50 rom/coms and not even mention Stranger Than Fiction in passing?

someonelse: nmrsnr: A good portion of those movies are not comedies, unless they are going with the old definition of "not tragedy." That being said, where the hell was "Some Like it Hot?"

Nobody's perfect.

+2 Internet's for that reply! Classic
