Wow.  Either someone is seriously trying to suck up to the Chinese, or there's a genius in the product placement division.

The Demolition Man thing with Taco Bell & Pizza Hut was just the start.

This is what happens when a company decides that making money is more important than standing up to a totalitarian (but certainly not Communist) government.

FTA: with many complaining about their country being represented on film by a ten-second presence of Wang

I thought this was supposed to be a fairly kid friendly movie?

To be fair, Chinese theater goers are actually used to 2 hours of solid, wall to wall Wang.

You miss my point.

In the US release, it was all Taco Bell.  But for foreign releases, it was CGI-ed and overdubbed to refer to Pizza Hut, since the Bell doesn't really have an overseas presence (and since they are owned by the same company, the intellectual property stuff was easier).

I hate Execs who think they know better.
I see a big meeting and them saying, "They'll like us even more if we're in a big movie, but we need to make sure they see us, so no matter what it is, it's ALWAYS too much. A camera lingering 5 seconds too long, a character mentioning the name 3 times in a scene. It's stupid, it's ridiculous and NO farking Exec gets it that  PISSES PEOPLE OFF.
All it does is create backlash towards the company but it doesn't matter, because all the yes men stand around saying "They were yelling Boo-URNS, sir."

How dare they even consider the largest market in the world!

Thought I read somewhere that the studio turned over their edit of the movie to China,  and then they put in their part after the fact.

I'm getting the idea no one paid Robert Downey Jr for this crap.

I don't know what the complaints are about. So China isn't perfect. Neither is the U.S. Hey, we use robots to kill anonymous citizens of out countries and start unnecessary conflict in the name of money, so what's the big deal?

If anyone wants to watch this movie it's streaming at veetle dot com in the Entertainment section.

It's a camcorder and there's a couple of places where it jumps but it's free.

The quality will improve, these guys had screeners to The Avengers while it was still fairly new in theaters.

Yeah but we don't fark up our superhero movies with dumbass product placement and obviously jarring scenes that have nothing to do with the mov--

OMG I see your point

Oh, the dick sucking was obvious and disgusting. The studio even allowed in propaganda officers from the PRC to come over and review the script, and even ordered some changes.

Paid a ticket to see IM3? Grats! You've made Mao very happy, Yankee Dog!

My understanding was somewhat similar, except that Shane Black had to approve the final Chinese edit.

Any chance at a citation? Not exactly questioning your comment, I'm more interested in reading a bit about it myself. Unfortunately my googleFu appears to be weak, other than a crappy 8 month old blog of course.

China gets its OWN VERSION of Iron Man 3 after Disney allows the country's film censors onto the set

Censors visited sets and even made creative suggestions

And

"In "Iron Man 3", which opens on May 1, Robert Downey Jr. stars as hero Tony Stark, while Ben Kingsley plays the "Mandarin", a half-Chinese villain - the kind of thing that could be a red flag for censors. In the Chinese version, however, the name is translated as "Man Daren", removing the overtly Chinese connotation.

"Iron Man 2" was also censored before it screened in China in 2010, with the words for "Russia" and "Russian" left untranslated in the subtitles and the spoken words muffled. China and Russia share a close-knit history of socialism and have recently reaffirmed close political and military ties. "

In other words, an American cold war superhero bowing down to become Mao's b*tch. What a complete and utter betrayal of every IM fan out there.

All my F*CK YOU's, Marvel!

PS: and THE reason why "World War Z" is going to be literally bloodless is because the PRC Censors demanded it.

Bow to Mao!

It's own version amounts to four extra minutes of footage that probably, in the long run, won't mean a damn thing to the overall plot.  Like you were going to watch it anyway.

TV's Vinnie: PS: and THE reason why "World War Z" is going to be literally bloodless is because the PRC Censors demanded it.

Bow to Mao!

...Because World War Z was such a faithful translation to begin with?
