King, whose daughter is in second grade at the school, said he hoped diversity training might be in the future for both teachers - and parents - at the school.
"We're literally at a school where most of the students are quite a bit below the median income range for our state and our country," King said, "and here we are using terms like 'freeloader Friday' and 'white trash Wednesday.'"
"It just goes a little bit too far," he added.

Serious question - Why did "Latino/Latina" come to mean people of Spanish linguistic backgrounds?

French, Italian, Romanian, and Portuguese have an equal claim to "Latin" in my opinion.

No one I know of suggests simply throwing "further cash at the problem" to resolve our education issues but rather providing for teachers, facilities, materials, resources in the classroom, tools, and training. Our money is spent frivolously with endless adoption of new programs and assessments and such which receive little educator input either coming in or leaving. I am quite comfortable with my pay despite there being no raise for heading on to our fifth year, but if the education system provided the materials for my classroom I need I would be able to do even more and spend significantly less of my salary to cover what is needed to do my job.

I thought it was a usage popularized by the LA Times in the 70s or 80s.  They needed a catch-all term that would apply to folks from the Spanish speaking cultures of the Americas.  The greater LA metro area has Spanish speaking people from Mexico, El Salvador, Colombia, Nicaragua, as well as their Americanized kids and grandkids, along with people whose families were here since California was owned by the King of Spain.  Just saying "Mexican" is often inaccurate, insufficient, or just plain wrong depending on the story.

I believe they also started to use the term Anglo for the white folks of the LA basin for the same reason.  Using "gringo" or "honkey" just wouldn't be polite.

jso2897, you are priceless. Perhaps from your hard-left perspective anyone to the right of you, including Obama, is a "Reagan Republican" (although this blasphemous comparison would come as a very great shock indeed to the legions of Obama fanboys on Fark). Back in the real world, however, it is very difficult to imagine Reagan agitating for late-term abortions, restrictive gun laws, and socialized medicine.

The very people who deplore the idea of a "white" identity also use the term WASP as a catchall for any North American with ancestry from northern, central, or eastern Europe, and it pisses me off (speaking as someone who is "white" but neither Anglo nor a Protestant). Why do so many people in the US assume that the peoples of Europe are a homogeneous mass, when centuries of European history prove the contrary? Or is the whole "WASP" idea based on the unfounded assumption that once a European moves to America, he automatically becomes part of some repressive and monolithic hierarchy based on race? Ignorance, sheer ignorance.

"Anglo" in this context just means "English speaking white person".  If they've got a story they're writing about the local DMV administering the written portion of the driver exam in various languages, nobody's going to give a shiat the Jose the Spanish-speaker is from Guatemala or that Frankie the guy who reads English has an Italian grandma back in New Jersey.  They were really looking for rough category names that weren't immediately offensive.  There's a shiat-ton of people that get pissed about "Latino" now, though.  Like you, they feel it's too imprecise/insulting.

It's turned into just a term for "Brown" if you're thinking in the kind of mental space that has "Black People" and "White People" and you need to cram Mexicans up in there.  Which is why it shows up in police reports as a physical description for race now.

I think a lot of the finer grained definitions of "white identity" evaporate on arrival at the Pacific coast.  Nobody seriously uses the term WASP here in SoCal that I've ever heard, that's some relic from the Northeast.  Annette Funicello was about as whitebread as it gets out here...but on the East Coast she would have been pegged as a guido's daughter.  People came here to wash their old identities clean, so many here have little left in the way of "Old Country" traditions anyhow.  I mean seriously, "Celto-French"?  I going to guess that the guy's family has been in the US since the 1850's, and the Celts haven't had their own country since the Vikings ran a train on the local women and set up Dublin as a trading post.  Give over, you're an American.

I'd also note here that many white people here in the US come from families that left Europe *centuries* ago, and that to them Europe really is a somewhat homogenous mass of squabbling white people on the other side of the ocean.  It was a long time ago, and far away.  When people ask me where my family is from I can honestly say "Illinois and Northern Florida", it's far more meaningful than saying my great great great grandad was from Dorset, England.

That's quite a misleading graph. It's locked it value in 2008 dollars instead of adjusting for inflation.
It's basically tracing the inflation curve from 1970 to 2003 and nothing else.

Uhhh.

You do understand that converting dollars fr every year to "2008 dollars" IS adjusting for inflation, don't you?

A better argument is that considering the breakup of families and other negative factors, the increase in spending was offsetting a downward trend. That's the typical liberal answer to "you just wasted a shiatload of money".
