No

Basically, this is how it works: you cannot go on a street corner on an American base in Afghanistan and spread the Gospel by screaming into a microphone. Chaplains dont do that. They only preach to those who come to them. There is nothing wrong because they sought out the knowledge and was not forced upon it.

That.

The problem is, the people who get mad at shiat like this also get upset whenever a christian warrior is asked to shut the fark up in a common area.

Military leaders were admonished not to use their position to "promote their personal religious beliefs to their subordinates or to extend preferential treatment for any religion."

And that's why I have no problem with this.  There's a big difference between "Hey Bob, what do you think of this God stuff?" "Well I'll tell ya" and "Shut up and listen to me sermonize because I outrank you".

That being said, this Weinstein person appears to be deeply stupid:
"It is a version of being spiritually raped and you are being spiritually raped by fundamentalist Christian religious predators,"
Weinstein called proselytizing a "national security threat." "And what the Pentagon needs to understand is that it is sedition and treason,"

Given that fundamentalist christianity has basically taken over the Air Force, I'm ok with this. The ostracizing of non-evangelical christians in the USAF is a serious problem that must be addressed.

In an interview with the Washington Post, Weinstein called proselytizing a "national security threat."  "What is happening is spiritual rape.  And what the Pentagon needs to understand is that it is sedition and treason," he told the newspaper.

Proselytizing is annoying and against military regulation, but it's not "rape," "sedition," or "treason."  Stfu attention whore.

/disdains proselytizing atheists as much as proselytizing Christians

There's a simple rule to follow with rape metaphors and similes:
Is the act you are comparing to rape anything other than rape?
No? Compare away.
Yes? Don't compare it to being raped, dumbass.

Reading this article was like being raped by bad metaphors.

Given how overtly and blatantly Christian the military actually is (memories of BCT at Fort Jackson: "you can either go sit in an air-conditioned church on Sunday morning where they have OJ and donuts, or you can stay behind, clean the barracks and do more PT until everybody gets back"...touch choice), I find the idea that the military is going to systematically target Christians for judicial punishment to be somewhat difficult to believe.

I was talking to a rape victim one day, and asked how it felt.  She said, "Have you ever been evangelized to by a military chaplain?  It's exactly like that."

Yep. Got flat out told that I "didn't belong in the Air Force" due to being an atheist. However, many of the higher ups know how much of a shiatstorm can spring up if that shiat gets out, so they quash it when it looks too obvious.

For those of you who have not read the Flashman books, these are a series of historical novels where basically one character is responsible for every major military event from the First Afghan War up to WW1. The best of the bunch is Flashman and the Great Game, which is about the Indian Mutiny.

There's a great bit where he's watching Christian preachers babble at the Indian soldiers -- their allies -- infuriating them, totally unaware of how much the local population is getting pissed off with them.

You shouldn't go around saying "vegetables" all willy-nilly. That's a trigger word for some of us.

2013-05-01 04:48:02 PM
Really, mods? A Todd Starnes link greenlit? You are bad people, and you should feel bad.

There is a story here, though; back in the 1980s, the evangelicals decided that one of their tactics to heal the nation's spiritual ills would be to infiltrate the military, just as they were working to join and influence secular politics. The Air Force Academy, in particular, became Ground Zero for aggressive evangelical proselytizing by Protestant chaplains (and rape of female cadets, it turns out, probably not coincidentally). The military being a conformist institution, people just sort of took it or ignored it. I don't know what happened, but apparently some brave secular souls finally said ENOUGH (or some non-evangelical general got involved), and the past five years or so have seen quite the rollback, which is what the Christers are complaining about as an attack on their religious freedumbs.

I'd say we need about 20 more years of Democratic presidents and the SecDefs they appoint to get us back to where we were in the '70s, with religion being a wholly private matter, and chaplains involved only in spiritual AID, not conversion.

Add the USAF, and that's fair.  I've only got first-hand experience with those two branches (both parents are Air Farce) anyway.

I was recently deployed to a military base in Afghanistan for six months. We had a memorial service every Sunday morning to honor the coalition and Afghan soldiers who had died in the previous week. Everybody attended these services because the big cheese attended. The chaplain on base always opened and closed these services with prayers. At least half of the time, the chaplain read from something that was not religious in nature. Once he quoted a Robert Frost poem. Once he quoted a Shel Silverstein poem. He quoted from various parts of the Bible, but I remember him quoting from the Qur'an once, and I'm pretty sure he used other holy texts as well. If you wanted more religion than that, you had to seek him out at the chapel where he openly preached from the Bible (among other sources).

That's the way it should be.
