Horrified, Mr. Gruss recorded part of the abuse, traced the Internet Protocol address to the Scranton area, and contacted local authorities. When the police did not act, he contacted The Times-Tribune.

Why would the police act? It's not a DUI or pot possession.

Ever dealt with an Alzheimer's patient? The police would start striking her as well.

Chicago resident Mark Gruss was researching webcams when he stumbled upon the open feed from Ms. James' living room and saw her beat and scream at her mother, Mary Jane James, Assistant District Attorney Suzanne Tierney said.

Sure...  just stumbled upon, but he's tech savvy enough to know how to record the video.

However the unsecured cams I've seen were just video no audio.

Probably went:

Creepy Internet Guy: "Hello, Scranton Police? I was 'researching internet cams' and I stumbled across someone slapping an elderly person. I have narrowed down the location to the Scranton area."

Scranton Police: "Okay, what's the address?"

CIG: "Well, I don't know the actual physical address, but I have an idea it's somewhere in or around Scranton"

SPD: "Oh. Okay, we'll get our elite squad of computer hackorz on this case immediately and pull up real-time satellite imagery of the house in questions."

Yes, we'll. I took my 93 year old near deaf mother to the grocery store yesterday. Took her almost 2 hours to get a small basket of stuff. She went down every aisle twice with shopping list clutched in hand. I would gladly shop for her myself, but she insists I know nothing about grocery shopping. Oh....and she is the lady in checkout that insists on paying by check. I dropped her off at her home and unloaded and shelved groceries.

I did not yell at her or beat her.

And the inevitably someone would take a swing with a FULL gallon bottle of Wesson Oil and miss, dropping it in the middle of the scrum, and then in the blink of an eye, there's a huge pile of us all covered in oil, rolling around on the grocery floor, our clothes melting away, and then it's a Full On Fark Grocery ORGY. See here, you're missing the point of an opposing example.  Lady in the article was likely beaten and yelled at for things a little infant or toddler would do by nature and now that mom is in that same state of helplessness, the treatment is being returned.  99.998er was probably not treated like that as a small child and therefore has the patience and grace to deal in kind.  Wait your turn, you'll get your chance to beat some elderly relative.  That would explain why the police did nothing, consistent practice of looking the other way.

When it comes to frail and demented relatives, often people want to have their cake and eat it too- keep them at home and be the primary carer, even though time, money and other caring commitments really prevent that. A frustrating situation just escalates. Thankfully, this time, people were there to break the vicious circle.

Imagine all the elder abuse that's going on out there just because people aren't willing to just give up and put Mom in a home.

^^^ This. A thousand times this.

If a person has no idea where or even who they are and can't communicate, let alone care for themselves, why do we keep them alive? I cannot think of a single rational reason to. They'll just continue to drain valuable resources while adding nothing to society.

I can completely understand caregiver burnout,I really can. Sometimes you just get aggravated and sick of the whole world BUT what you don't ever do is take that out on the person you're caring for. Get someone else to watch them for a bit and try to relieve some stress but beating a 90 some year old woman? fark that, that's just being an asshole cause you're mad.

Elder abuse can be just as bad in the "home".  Underpaid staff having to clean up who knows what kind of bodily fluids all day coupled with elderly patients with mental issues yelling at them is a recipe for abuse.
