All we know right now is these are students from a middle eastern sounding country who may possibly at one time have known the guys who did the boston bombing.  So I think it's pretty safe to assume they were accomplices.

FrancoFile: Probably accessories after the fact.  Helped Joker dispose of laptop, bomb-making gear, etc.

Sounds like it. One has to ask if they knew that they were helping get rid of evidence or not. Time frame of events should tell us quite a bit.

Next to the article is a news film clip that proclaims "Dwarves cross Boston Marathon finish line". It shows two dwarves (in suspiciously good condition) jogging along with big smiles.

Things that make you go ... hmmmm!

Boy, that's some stick-to-it-ivity there, little guys! You may be slow, but you finished eventually!

Or maybe it's just pure Fark. I don't know because I didn't RTFA or rather view the clip.

now if only we could collect up every other person that's violating their visa or is here illegally - we could free up quite a lot of social services for actual citizens.

Not trying to thread jack at all -- it's just nice to see people being held to the rules for once in this country. Sucks it's on fear mongering because of terrorists... but anyone here on a Visa knows how long they can stay... you can't play dumb when it comes to stuff like this.

Follow the rules or we kick you out -- it sounds pretty damn reasonable to me.

Stone Meadow: Overstayed their visas? Yeah, that's TOTALLY a connection to the bombings. Fark.

Yeah and the FBI and Homeland security agents wearing HAZMAT suits always pick up students who violate the terms of their visas, obviously no relation to the bombing at all.

You do of course realize, the amount of money you would have to spend to do this would exceed the amount of money you would save, right?

I mean, I'm with you in principle, but in actual practice you're own your own.

I'm not quite understanding this.  The article has a date of April 22 on it -- 9 days ago.  This is old news, I believe there was a thread on this last week in fact.  Am I missing something (besides the "Welcome to Fark" picture)?

Shiatty reporting is shiatty reporting. These guys were arrested 5 days ago and it's just now getting out. Besides, tfa is incorrect. The hazmat suits were being worn by the people rooting through the land fill.

More than you think.  Subsidized child care, for example, doesn't require SSNs and minimal citizenship documentation.

But I also think it's worth considering the expired visas people's contribution to the economy.  However, any rational discussion of this issue is immediately derailed by accusations of racism from the left and jingoism on the right.

Wow. That's a tough rap for these kids- by all indications, the younger one seemed like a normal guy, not someone you would suspect of being a terrorist.

If you were 19, and your buddy said "hey, can you go to my room and find my laptop and wipe it clean" you may actually do it, thinking the kid had been caught downloading Game of Thrones or something. I'll wait to see what sort of info the kids had about this before passing judgement.

Well, I'm probably the wrong person to ask about that. I'm an Iraq vet, and it's not too great of a stretch of the imagination for me to imagine one of my friends setting off a public explosion in order to make a statement about, say, the VA's mental health care for returning Soldiers or similar.

Of course, now that I think about it, the person I know with the combination of improvised explosive skills and historical knowledge of message bombings is... me. I'd pull an IRA, though, and call ahead, warning people to avoid the area.

But even more than that, I don't think living the type of life where you never make at least one friend who you'd think was capable of setting off explosives in public sounds interesting.

The men allegedly recognized Dzhokhar, 19, from video of the bombing scene released by the FBI and went to his dorm room at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, where they were let in by his roommate.
The trio spotted a backpack containing fireworks that had been emptied of their explosive powder and decided to take it, according to a criminal complaint. They also took a laptop because they didn't want to arouse the roommate's suspicions about the backpack, the complaint said.
There was no indication the three men had any prior knowledge of the bombing.

He texted them saying " go to my dorm room, take anything you want lol"

and one of those things was a jar of vaseline.

This was before they named him as a suspect.

I will say if they were caught overstaying then heck yeah they should get deported, like everyone else - you know the odds when you overstay a visa, and well, sucks to be you.  Enjoy your 5 to 10 year ban.

If they hid evidence and lied about it, again, worthy of punishment.  Still doesn't mean "ooh, booga booga terrorism" though.  If you help your friend cover up a murder, doesn't matter who it is, that's worth some charges.

Sigh.  Did you read it?   Texas spent a half a billion more in services than it got in taxes.

From page 9 of the publication you cited - "most of the studies that include both revenues and costs for multiple programs show that state and local governments spend more on unauthorized immigrants than they collect in revenues from that population."

Note that includes only state and local governments, where the majority of public assistance comes from the federal government.

And Texas?  From page 10 of the article you cited - "another report - prepared by the comptroller of Texas - estimated that in 2006, the state collected $424 million more in revenue from unauthorized immigrants than it spent to provide education, health, and law enforcement services to that population.  However, the state estimated that local governments incurred $1.4 billion in uncompensated costs for health care and law enforcement.

Don't strain yourself shifting the goalpost.

Pfft...  Right about now...  if you've ever had a tea and scone with one of those guys...  If you smelled their breath as they passed you in the mall...  You will be investigated up to your eyeballs.  And if you happen to have any issues with immigration because you were stupid enough to not follow up on your legal status (Visa), you will almost certainly be taken into custody and interrogated.  And if you don't answer all the questions as expected, you will also find yourself incarcerated for an indeterminate amount of time.

No, I'm not.  The original point I made is the cost is negligible and yes, yes sure enough according to what you quoted, the state government of Texas actually made money off illegal immigrants.  Now, you'd be an enormous jackass to think I'm arguing illegals pay more in than they get out, given you read the same citation I did.  That citation clearly argued the cost of illegal immigrants was pretty farking small.

Now that $1.4 Billion, we can discuss that as well.  You see, that's the local government spending on health care and law enforcement.  It's a big number, right?  Are you suggesting enforcing illegal immigration laws is really expensive?  Whoa, so am I:

No. Glenn Beck, Breitbart, Alex Jones, et. al. conflated a completely different Saudi who was being deported with the kid who was injured in the bombing, who isn't a suspect and hasn't been deported. Typical derportage. It's still red hot on the wingnutosphere, but hasn't spread beyond even to Fox, because the "terrorist links" involving that kid are that he has the same last name as some Al Qaeda guys. His last name they're referencing is al-Harbi, which means "person of war." Obviously, everyone with that name (approximately one million people) and all their relatives were the 21st hijacker.

I'm starting to think that the latest trend among right-wingers is to take something that was said by a bunch of anonymous Web commenters and attribute it to "the media." It's far too ambiguous to look up (like they care about sources anyhow), gives them something stupid to get outraged about and blames it on a source they love to hate.

Liberals prayed SO HARD that the bombers would be Tea party Patriots.  Watch them squirm, as their precious "religion of peace" produces yet more bombers, squealling "Y-y-you can't judge a people by one or two ISOLATED INCIDENTS!  We must be tolerant!  Tolerant~!"

You have never seen a more recent, disgusting example of liberals openly wishing that terrorists would be their political opponents.

Look, you can be a tea party follower, even a Patriot moron, without being a terrorist. But that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of people who fit that radical label who ARE terrorists, or want to be. When militia members talk about watering the roots of the tree of liberty with blood SOME OF THEM ACTUALLY MEAN IT.

Libruls need to acknowledge that the New Left anti-war movement encouraged terrorism in the '70s, and conservatives need to acknowledge that the militia and patriot movements encouraged terrorism in the '80s, '90s and ...?

No. I suspect that's partly why there's such desperation that this be part of some giant furrin' war plot so that Those In Charge Can Do Something About It, or something.

It's closer to Columbine than 9/11, really.

2.5/10. Try and be at least a lot less obvious with your trolling. You get 1/2 a point for using a pic, which garners more attention. Also a whole point extra for the fact that it's such a stupid, stupid pic of a totally emotionless cat that could be captioned with almost anything and still work. I actually find that bit pretty irritating, which is kinda the whole point.

All points removed if you respond to this post like it's an actual bite.

A couple of guys got arrested for selling pot on the college campus that I work at. They were with a dark skinned middle eastern fellow who agreed the let the cops search his apartment a few doors down and his car. The campus police found half a bag of fertilizer, some plastic capsules (like you guy at GMC for making your own vitamins), a small propane tank, and.........wait for it..............a slow cooker in his car (duh DUH duh). He's now being investigated by the ATF and FBI for the equivalent of what you could find in most garages around the country (minus the weed). I can't help but wonder if that guy is tied to the Boston Bombings

lennavan: state and local governments spend more on unauthorized immigrants than they collect in revenues

Those statements don't contradict each other at all.  And if you'd read that whole post, you would have seen that without anybody beating your head over it.

FLMountainMan: the state collected $424 million more in revenue from unauthorized immigrants than it spent to provide education, health, and law enforcement services to that population. However, the state estimated that local governments incurred $1.4 billion in uncompensated costs for health care and law enforcement

lennavan: The original point I made is the cost is negligible and yes, yes sure enough according to what you quoted, the state government of Texas actually made money off illegal immigrants.

I'm not sure I would call $1.4 billion negligible, but we should probably ask those local governments what they think.

Though it would an interesting point about the increased police costs coming from enforcing immigration laws specifically, if true.  Do you have any data to back up that claim?

I would argue that telling lies to the police is hardly a crime worthy of federal prison.  Like Jaywalking, the punishment should be proportional to the seriousness of the offense.  Especially considering that people lie every day.

I wasn't comparing those two statements.  Here is the relevant portion of the post again for you to re-read.

lennavan: FLMountainMan: Texas spent a half a billion more in services than it got in taxes.

This totally doesn't match:

FLMountainMan: Texas - estimated that in 2006, the state collected $424 million more in revenue from unauthorized immigrants than it spent to provide education, health, and law enforcement services to that population.

serial_crusher: but we should probably ask those local governments

My post was about the state.  Are you asking me to move the goalposts?  I mean, perhaps we should but let's at least acknowledge we're moving them, okay?

serial_crusher: I'm not sure I would call $1.4 billion negligible

He never answered my question about Colorado.  In Colorado it's more like $50 million.  In Iowa it's more like $30 million.    Also from the citation I provided, they estimate about $1 trillion will be spent, just on education.

But here is the line you may find most relevant:

Although it is difficult to obtain precise estimates of the net impact of the unauthorized population on state and local budgets (see Box 1), that impact is most likely modest.

That sounds about right. It's similar to some article I saw, may even have been posted on here, that showed as long as your nutty article had lines of text with hyperlinks stating something was reported by the New York Times, regardless of where that link actually went or if it even supported the argument, people just believed it to be true because just the presence of the hyperlink meant someone else did the research work for them.

what_now: Gonz: what_now: Wow.

If I lived in or near the scene of a well-publicized terror attack, and my buddy said "hey, can you go to my room and find my laptop and wipe it clean" after things had gone all explodey, I'd probably call the FBI.

But that's just me. I have a very small number of people in my circle of friends for whom I'd be willing to risk jail time.

Yeah- but again your not a 19 year old kid. Pick a random friend of yours. See that guy? Now, do you think he would set off explosions in a public place? Yes or no?

If yes, wtf is this guy your friend?

It's like murder - make a thing illegal and it acquires a mystique. Look at arson - I mean, how many of us can honestly say that at one time or another he hasn't set fire to some great public building? I know I have.

Well you realize saying that Kazakhstan is in the Caucasus is like saying Poland is in Asia, right?

Or are you really that retarded?

Central Asia is an historically and cultrually bound region with a long history of mobile pastoralism. This does not exist in the Caucasus.

Please stop linking to the Herald. They're Boston's equivalent to the Daily Fail, in that their stories are written at a fourth-grade level to incite negative reactions in people who think at a fourth-grade level. They're known to fabricate quite a bit, and I would not eat any fish that had been wrapped in a copy (because it's a safe assumption that even the ink is toxic).

It was once owned by Rupert Murdoch. Not much has changed since he set the tone.
