That's what I thought too.  Isn't the context that you were sold down(stream) the river, and ended up in NOLA, which was a huge hub for slave sales, and the end point of most rivers (via the Mississippi) in the SE US?

Only if you believe every piece of literature I've ever read from the slave era. Mark Twain used the term a number of times in his novels, I recall.

That and the fact that you were further from the north, where you would be free.

Subby mixed up "sell down the river (screw for gain)" with "send up the river (send to prison)."

I hate Facebook.

However, I have to give credit to Facebook for reuniting me with the love of my life. We both made accounts around the same time, having been pressured into it by friends and family. We found each other, began communicating, and then essentially dropped Facebook shortly after. She maintains an account to communicate with cousins who don't know how to communicate any other way, and I have one just to enter contests that require a company being "Liked" in order to enter. Otherwise, we stay off of it.

I personally think Facebook is going to be a big part of the downfall of civilization, but at the same time I'm grudgingly grateful that Facebook made it possible for me to be happier than I've ever been in my life. It's all very conflicting, and in the end I have to agree that if Facebook makes it possible for even a few people to reconnect with The One, then it might justify Facebook's existence. Goodness knows Classmates never came through for me for free, anyway.

By the way, it may just be because I have two kinds of Adblock on my browser, but I haven't seen anything about Classmates in a long time. Did Facebook kill it stone dead? If so, that's another check in the "positive" side for Facebook.... Dammit.

I think Facebook is like masturbation. Used occasionally, it can be a source of great pleasure, but if you use it constantly you end up losing sensitivity and becoming emotionally and socially crippled (and possibly even raw or wounded!)

GuidoDelConfuso: So, this guy tried to use her as part of an international drug trafficking scheme twenty years ago, and when she contacts him out of the blue it turns out that he's a really nice guy, and very sorry for what he did, and he's totally changed and wants to meet her now...  and she's actually going to do it?

This.  Why the fark would you go privately meet the guy who used you as his drug mule without your consent?  Some people never learn.

I was OK with this story until I saw her name is Alexandra and she now calls herself "Alix." Now I'm sad she didn't rot in an Israeli hole.

Here at work we send people "Down the hill" when we punish them. It's where the crappy building where we send people before we fire them or transfer them.

The woman whose name was on the envelope had gotten the worst of it, since she admitted to the police that she asked him to send the drugs out of curiosity. He only had to spend one night in jail. But he was so racked with guilt for what he'd done to me that he brought it to therapy.

So the other woman got the worst of which was ... more than one night in jail? If you bring it up you need to address it.

My experience is similar.  I reconnected with the first love of my life whom I haven't talked to in 32 years.  Now I'm moving back home to spend the rest of my life with her.  I've moved around a lot in life and lost track of everyone.  Facebook comes along and the wonderful friends from all the phases of my life are there.  It's changed my life and grounded me in ways I didn't even know I needed.

But I hate Facebook because of the constantly changing format, the privacy violations and the constant suck of Zuckerberg's greed.  So much good has been overshadowed by so much bad that I rarely get on fb anymore.  Facebook is basically just a copy of my Twitter feed anymore.

/I'm a hep old man.  I can do the Twitter machine!
