You know, I'm a big Morse guy.  I used to copy Morse code professionally, and I still do it as a hobby.  I've often thought of sending Western Union a resume and cover letter applying for the job of telegrapher, just to see what the response would be.

Subby, this is how your telegram would read if it was sent:

Western Union. Profit down 14%. As revenue slips.

Does that make sense to you? See, it's people like you who don't understand how to structure these things and properly implement the "full stop" character that are probably causing Western Union to have all these problems in the first place. If I want a 7-word sentence riddled with grammatical errors, I'll stick to Twitter.

Be easy on subby.  (S)he may not be familiar with how the full stop works .They'll learn, but there will be a period of adjustment.

But how do we say it in semaphore?

Given Western Union's business model, it should be: $top

I blame Blazanov.  You can't go reading Hearst's messages to Al Swearingen.

That means less people wiring money out of the country.

Upon reading this headline I had to google when they stopped sending telegrams.  I was amazed it was in 2006.  Mind boggling.

Between PayPal and other easily accessible tools "wiring money" isn't the way you do things so much anymore.

Also, this might reflect self-deportation effects.

I don't see how, when they collect $5~$10 for every car payment or mortgage payment I make online.

Subby, that's just not fair. They're flush with cash, they're just waiting on that wire from their guy in nigeria.. But literally the second that cash that and send that guy his cut, they are ON IT.

Glorified check cashing scam artists, they should be shuttered entirely.

Because you stopped making your payments, deadbeat! Get a job, sir!

50 years ago subby would have been more thoroughly mocked for his misuse of [stop]

It's all those Mexicans who quit sending money home that's hurting them. I blame Obama.

In all seriousness, the recession did stem the tide of illegal immigrants, so there are fewer people looking to send money overseas than there once were.  And many of those who remain now have other choices (e.g. PayPal, Bitcoin), especially as smartphone use spreads across the developing world.

I was being a little snarky about blaming Obama, of course, but I agree with you 100%. WU is in a real pickle.

Yea dude, the illegals are totally into Bitcoin now. Way more stable than the USD they risked life and limb to earn, and even easier to convert to pesos. You'd have to be like the stupidest illegal immigrant ever to not be using Bitcoin for transferring money to your family. Especially as smartphone use increases, it would be idiotic to assume that the average illegal immigrant isn't converting their paychecks to internet-based forms of currency with their iPhones and transmitting them to international recipients.

The same way we say it sign language.

I love that iTelegram, who took over Western Union telegram service in the US in 2006, will send an email to let you know the status of your telegram.

Serious question: who still uses telegrams, and why?
