Did they machine their own gun replicas?  Amazing.

Okay, smart people.  They have been designed, now build them.  Now.

Metal Gear?

Dear Blizzard, you have tons of money.  Use it to build me a mechanostrider.
Thanks in advance.

Anyone else having problems distinguishing renderings from reality?  Not sure if my brain is failing or high-rez CG has gotten that good.

So I'm sure Blizzard has some stock objects, but htf do you render such badassery in 1 day?  Truly amazing.

These need to be made into toy models so I can finger fark them.

Does it say anywhere what program he used to do it?  And how many hours he used on each model?

/Really impressed.

Never mind, I found the Q&A

Whilst they look good, there is perhaps a little too much of what he was riffing off of in day 8.   Hacking the feet off a Landmate just makes it a Landmate with its feet hacked off.

It'd of been way more impressive with it's cockpit open in the 'hanger' render.   Not that it isn't an impressive display of skill already but an open cockpit would of been more so.

/Landies aren't autonomous.

The backgrounds are photographs, which helps to confuse your eyes.

But yeah, they're pretty good, even for an industry professional. Bonus, he didn't have to worry about poly counts and stupid game design crap like that.

Dinobot: Metal Gear?

First thing I thought of...

Some of those robots looked awesome and others I swear I have seen from other places. The Day 1 robot looks like its from Ghost in a Shell for instance. The robot dogs I have seen some where but cant cant put a name to it, and the day 5 and 8 seem almost right from MGS4.

Still really awesome. Got some pictures I can play with as a background now.

I didn't get a landmate vibe from it. Chair in the torso, pilots head where the machines head is, seems more like a heavygear or a labor.
Shirow has flexible rules about his mechs, but the mates usually seat pilots in the waist area, head and arms buried in the torso.

/A great layout for protecting the pilot, but terribad for engineering a machine around.

Any loader that terminates a thresher can be proud that they terminated a thresher

Jack is your god. Threshers are your enemies. And they both consider you expendable.

If I remember labor's are driven from the seated position (like a BattleMech), Landmate's are more of a standing position thing, there is a saddle of sorts but you aren't sat down whilst the thing is in motion.   If not a Landmate then the civillian construction version, that's more squared than the combat versions.

But I'm getting a serious Shirow vibe from it.  It looks about the right height for one of his smaller Mechas.

In the Q&A for the project, he states that he spent 16 hours a day on each model, but they weren't concurrent days.  He worked on a model, used a day to rest, then worked on the next.  He also said he has is own personal library of models and textures that he pulls from so a lot of the mechanical components (hooks, cylinders, etc) are all stock items.

#7 was kind of lame.
#8 will get stuck in the mud.
How does an injured/unconscious person climb into #9?

The renderings are beautiful, and fairly seamless (ex: the pic with the dog), but none of these is very original.

It may have something to do with the background used for #8.

IBL's (image based lighting) really helps get the realism done nicer.  Those look very good and they probably still use 3d Max.

Now if only they could hire some game designers to fix D3.

give me doughnuts: #8 will get stuck in the mud.

Most of them seem to have "indoors-only" feet.

give me doughnuts: How does an injured/unconscious person climb into #9?

I guess the pincher arm on the left side of the cabin would grap him/her while the stretcher slid underneath.  Severely worsening the victim's spinal injuries.

I also question the practicallity of the rotor blades.

So the PS4 and 720 are going to be able to do this in real time, right?

2013-05-01 11:21:30 AM
They're ok, but my Mechs in Chromehounds could probably take them out.

/The citizens of Morskoj frown upon these designs

They can do this in a day, but it takes 8+ years to come up with a decent human male model in WoW.

i was gonna say, from a technique level they're great. excellent render and well integrated.

but stylistically this is just him riffing on the stuff you can find on deviantart or ANY of the cg artist forums in spades.

So a single blizzard artist can shiat this kinda work out in a day, but an entire team of them needs over a year to make retarded armor designs and cant be bothered to create higher poly player models for old races?

Yet they still haven't done something as simple as update the almost-a-decade-old character models in World of WarCraft.

/would love to play as a Human, Troll, or Gnome, but god damn are they ugly and misshapen and in dire need of updating
