Captain Planet was a farking joke.

They painted the villains people who get off on destroying ecology. These people don't exist. Even if you go watch the 2006 doumentary Varmints- those guys are just assholes. They don't lie awake at night jerking off to dreams of a world without the animals they slaughter for fun. A world without those animals would make them sad because they wouldn't have so many animals to blow up with hollow points.

The real enemy of the ecosystem is apathy. Unfortunately apathy makes a poor cartoon villain.

/Do not watch Varmints. It will hurt you.

I suspect that the respective fans of Firefly and Arrested Development are worse than either RR or ST fans.

Speaking of Arrested Development, here is a picture of Maebe laughing to herself at a premiere.

Who are more extreme: fans of  Reading Rainbow or fans of  Star Trek?
Star Trek fans are very cool. Reading Rainbow fans, it's very emotional for them because it's their childhood.

Or there is someone like me who grew up on both Star Trek TNG and Reading Rainbow and consider both to be a huge part of my childhood. Star Trek made me interested in technology which influenced what degree I went after. And Reading Rainbow made me read. or at least try to, even though I had a really bad eye issue and could not read very well.

Both of those shows are my childhood favorites.

It's always been strange to me that I never watched Reading Rainbow. I was a kid at just the right time. I watched a lot of other PBS shows (i.e. Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street). I even watched ST: TNG. I loved reading and would have loved a show about it. But I never knew the show existed until I was an adult.

At the time that Captain Planet was produced, such individuals did not exist. Such individuals do exist now, as they see "destroying ecology" as a means of "sticking it to the libs", which does indeed "get them off".

What do you think of the JJ Abrams Star Trek?
I'm very eager to see the next movie and to see what it is he wants to talk about.
Star Trek's always about something. What's JJ trying to say? That's what I'm very interested in discovering.

Nice emphasis on "about." If Abrams hasn't said it in the 127 minutes we've already seen, then he probably won't be saying in the next 132.

If you were at W00tstock last year, you'd have realized the rabid nature of the RR fans.  Burton walked out on stage for a few mintues to congradulate Wheaton and he began to sing the first few words of the theme song.  The crowd quickly finished the whole song (which surprised the hell out of everyone... probably the high point of the show, which is saying something).

If the Holodeck concept originated with TAS, it's still a  Star Trek series even if it manages to be less canon than anything JJ Abrams has made.

This.  My in-laws love nothing more that sticking it to the libs and eco-hippies.  And according to my mother-in-law Jesus will come back quicker if we destroy the planet.
