I'd prefer them to be renamed the Los Angeles Bulldogs.

The only way it's getting changed is when people stop giving them money because of the name.  There isn't any law saying you can't be offensive (the first amendment prohibits it), so people will have to change it with their wallets.  Don't like it?  Then don't support it.  But stop whining about it one way or another and educate people.

Dr Dreidel: hasty ambush: [www.allblacksvsengland.com image 416x300]

[www.chicagonow.com image 506x296]

Never heard of the second, but the first is the All-Blacks, so named for the incredibly racist reason that their uniforms are all black.

// well, not 100% black, but calling them the "All-Blacks Except for Stripes on Our Socks" would get kind of wordy

// how much more black could they be? Eh, a little...

It is a pic of them doing the Haka,  a traditional Maori dance, which could be considered racist or unPC. I imagine if the Cleveland Indians held a war dance before each game some body would get their breechcloth in a wad.

As for the second

Fightin' Whities mascot raises a little awarness, a little cash

"When local activists failed to persuade Eaton High School in Greeley, Colo., to change the name and Indian mascot of its team, the Fightin' Reds, the Indian university students decided to make their point a different way.

They changed the name of their intramural basketball team from the Native Pride to The Fightin' Whities.

As Solomon Little Owl, a team member who also directs the university's Native American Student Services, explained to reporters, his teammates, who include some Hispanics and Caucasians, wanted to "do something that will let people see the other side of what it's like to be a mascot."

The result? A media frenzy, of course. Network television, major newspapers and radio talk shows have made the Fightin' Whities the best covered intramural squad in the nation. The Greeley Tribune says its Web site, www.greeleytrib.com, crashed last Tuesday when demand for the story soared from the usual 200 hits a day for a high-interest local story to 29,000.

Yet, Caucasians have proved to be remarkably resistant to offense. Quite the opposite, many agree with the e-mailer who saw the new team name as an honor to white Americans, who apparently don't get enough credit for their many contributions to history.

"Help me out here," asked one e-mail to the Greeley Tribune, "why am I supposed to be offended?"

He's an American by choice. I'm having a hard time reconciling this comment with the rest of your post, which seemed to be thoughtful thoroughly respectful of individual differences.

Did you simply miss the part where it said he was naturalized? Or do you reserve the term "American" for people born in America (in which case, I have to tell you, you're using the word differently from almost everybody else)?

I did miss that he was naturalized.  My bad.   Sorry.

Or it could be considered an homage. Context, it seems, matters.

This is bringing me back to a debate from sociology where a girl kept correcting the prof that the people from Sierra Leone are "African  American" and that calling them African was offensive.

The only person offended was the Jamaican kid. Stupidity hurts more than most accidental political incorrectness.

If Native Americans were bothered by the team name, that would be one thing.  They're not.  They think it's awesome (just like I think "Fighting Whities" is awesome).  It's the Howard Zinn crowd that's offended, and those people are blights on the planet.

Well, looks like you are gonna have to rethink your position, native american groups have sued to stop the use of this...time to move the goalposts, eh?

When I said "Native Americans", the implied meaning was "a sizable number of Native Americans," as opposed to "a single Native American!" or "one particularly litigious tribe!"  That should have been obvious, but it must not have been, so allow me to clarify that now.

By analogy, you could say that "white people hate Obama," but I would disagree, pointing out that only a small subset of white people do.  That's why saying "white people hate Obama" is misleading.

If half, or even nearly half, of Native Americans were upset by the name "Redskins", I would deem that enough to merit a change.  But as polling indicates, it's only a small minority of <10% that are bothered by the name.  That's less than the % of people who want to ban Halloween for promoting paganism.  It's a fringe position.

I thought it would be that, given the tone of the rest of your response. No problem.

Asking people if they are offended by the Washington Redskins' name actually sounds like a great way to weed out people I do not want to hang out with.
