A couple of things.  The only time I've ever heard "redskin" used as an insult it had nothing to do with Indians, and everything to do with football.

Warriors would not be an acceptable change, just ask Marquette.

Lastly, how much you want to bet they would still be able to trot out Redskins gear for throwback games if the name is indeed changed.

meanmutton: Dr Dreidel: vernonFL: That is nice, but the Redskins do not play in Washington, D.C. The stadium is in Maryland.

Maybe the team is incorporated in DC or somehow has some contract or agreement with the DC local government?

The right to use "Washington" in the name, for example.

It might be lulzy if all these "b-b-but TRADITION" folks now had to live with the "Maryland Redskins" because DC won't let them use the name anymore. It'd be better if they changed the mascot to the potato.

// and Fark's nipples would explode with delight

Municipalities don't own a trademark on their names.  The District has no way to stop the team from using the name if they're not incorporated in the District, don't do business in the District, and have no contracts with the District.  There are, of course, big "ifs".

Yup. Hell, the only reason the first owner integrated the team in '62 was because otherwise the 'Skins would have been kicked out of DC (now RFK) Stadium.

How about the Washington Red Menace. They could have the decaying corpse of Eugene McCarthy as their mascot. Their official chant should be "Are you now or have you ever been a fan of the Washington NFL franchise?"

/the automatic answer is "I take the 5th!"
/the second automatic answer is to shout "No!" then shout out a list of names of friends who are fans

This is so stupid. Why are mascot names presumed to be offensive? Last I checked Irish people weren't mad at Notre Dame. The Seminole tribe supports the use of its name by Florida State. Kings aren't offended by the defending Stanley Cup champs. Cowboys aren't holding protests outside of Jerry-World. Heck, Canuck is even a derogatory term and no one in Canada seems to care.

More than almost any other sports team I've seen, the Redskins "faithful" are only around when the team is winning.  In other words, it was near-impossible to find actual 'Skins fans in our near-ish DC suburb for the past ten years or so.  Then, halfway through last year, EVERYONE was a 'Skins fan.  It was ludicrous, and you could easily tell that more than half of them had never actually seen the team play.

This, I dub them: the Washington Bandwagoneers.

Hmmm....true, 49ers fans seem to be pretty bad about that as well.  Say what you will about teams like Cleveland and Seattle, but, dammit, their fans support them even in 2-14 seasons.

Of course, it is getting hard as well, with NFL logos becoming considered "fashions."  There was a guy in my class wearing a Seahawks cap (rare for the DC area, to say the least).  I asked him if he was an actual Seahawks fan, and he said nono, just the colors.  Then he pointed out his Jaguars lanyard and his Giants shirt.

Funny thing. I lived in the Bay Area my growing years(East San Jose), Moved to Arlington VA when they won their Super Bowl against the Broncos, then to Upstate NY during the Giants and Bills runs. Saw how fans in the Bay Area would go back and forth between the Raiders and 9ers, then abandon them when they were losing. Never saw anyone admit to being a 9er fan till 81. Before that, everyone was either Raiders, Cowboys, Steelers, or Rams fans. 9er fans then appeared from no where, and gave everyone else crap, while acting like the worlds biggest douches.

Being in Arlington VA when the redskins won was painful, and guy I worked with gave me plenty of ribbing, but it was all in good fun. Did get tired of seeing Doug Williams treated like HOF and his face plastered all over the place.

Then moved to Upstate NY. Everyone was either a Bills or giants fan. Only met two people who said they liked the Jets. Bills fans were obnoxious as hell during the early 90's over there. Constantly trash talking everyone. Giants fans were actually more laid back even when talking to a Cowboys fan. Was funny, because at the time they seemed to be more angry at Jones than myself and the other Cowboys fans there over the firing of Landry(Maybe because he's a former Giant), and would often say how they wanted the Cowboys to get good again to bring that old rivalry back. Very nice and polite fans, and they also knew their football well. Don't know what happened since then.

Anyhoo, back to CA, and 9er fans still acting like douches. Was so happy to see Aikman to Harper to shut their pie holes up about "The Catch". Made bets with 9ers fans on those championship games, and of course they welched. Dallas and San Francisco then went into mediocrity again, and i saw the 9er faithful putting on their old Raiders shirts again. Look at the Dallas game from 2 years ago at Candlestick, and it's about 1/3 to almost half Dallas fans. Now they are all busting out the white wine, and acting like they are a dynasty already.

/Whiner fans in a nutshell.

I thought the Bullets could change to the Washington Homeless, but it could work for the 'Skins too.  Call the team the Homies.  Every week, you get a new homeless guy to be your mascot.  You hose him down in the locker room.  You give him a bunch of clean clothes (team-branded schwag, sweatpants, heavy jackets).  You feed him on game day.  You let him flip the coin to see who kicks off.  Sunday night, you buy him a cab to his favorite shelter and make a $5k donation in his name.

Plus Snyder has already registered the Washington Warriors as a trademark as insurance. We already know what the team will be named if a change comes.

as a Redskin fan I hope Warriors isn't the choice.

If Synder is smart (lol) he would make a deal with some local tribe and license a name to use, keep it Native American, Historic and come out the good guy for once.

Difficulty--pretty much there ARE no existing Federally-recognised First Nations near the area, having been essentially ethnically cleansed from existence and/or recognition a goodly long time ago (link goes to a map of "Dawes Act" recognised First Nations, there's a few other groups who have state recognition but not federal).  Most First Nations folks who'd have a say within 150 miles of DC are what would be termed "Non-Dawes-Act persons of First Nations descent"--not recognised at all federally, though they may still maintain some kind of tribal identity otherwise.  About the closest you'll get to anything resembling tribal identity in Washington is the National Museum of the American Indian and--until recently--Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell's chambers.

(Seriously, the two closest First Nations to Washington would have far more of a claim to any team for Williamsburg--the Pamunkey First Nation (descendants of the First Nation that Pocahontas was a member of, and--notably--pretty much the sole legal exemption to Virginia's especially notorious "One Drop" law back in the Jim Crow days that classified anyone with discernable non-white ancestry as "coloured under law") and the Mattaponi First Nation.  Let's just say that Europeans did a VERY thorough job of ethnically cleansing the future site of Washington, DC of any groups they might have to respect treaty rights towards.)
