timujin: LucklessWonder: timujin: LucklessWonder: whizbangthedirtfarmer: More than almost any other sports team I've seen, the Redskins "faithful" are only around when the team is winning.  In other words, it was near-impossible to find actual 'Skins fans in our near-ish DC suburb for the past ten years or so.  Then, halfway through last year, EVERYONE was a 'Skins fan.  It was ludicrous, and you could easily tell that more than half of them had never actually seen the team play.

This, I dub them: the Washington Bandwagoneers.

Not all of us. I've been a Redskins fan since before I even lived in this country. And they have quite the sell out streak and crazy fans around here, even for a team that's been basically terrible since the 1991 season.

91'? Even that was the era of Buffalo.

/Until Dallas clobbered them, of course.

1991 Redskins went 14-2 and won the Super Bowl 37-24 (granted, against Buffalo)

Oh, shiat, right... thought Buffalo had taken it that year.  I bow to your superior knowledge.

what year did Buffalo ever take it?

They didn't, I only thought they had in '91, hence the admission to being mistaken.

I thought the Bullets could change to the Washington Homeless, but it could work for the 'Skins too.  Call the team the Homies.  Every week, you get a new homeless guy to be your mascot.  You hose him down in the locker room.  You give him a bunch of clean clothes (team-branded schwag, sweatpants, heavy jackets).  You feed him on game day.  You let him flip the coin to see who kicks off.  Sunday night, you buy him a cab to his favorite shelter and make a $5k donation in his name.

Difficulty--pretty much there ARE no existing Federally-recognised First Nations near the area, having been essentially ethnically cleansed from existence and/or recognition a goodly long time ago (link goes to a map of "Dawes Act" recognised First Nations, there's a few other groups who have state recognition but not federal).  Most First Nations folks who'd have a say within 150 miles of DC are what would be termed "Non-Dawes-Act persons of First Nations descent"--not recognised at all federally, though they may still maintain some kind of tribal identity otherwise.  About the closest you'll get to anything resembling tribal identity in Washington is the National Museum of the American Indian and--until recently--Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell's chambers.

(Seriously, the two closest First Nations to Washington would have far more of a claim to any team for Williamsburg--the Pamunkey First Nation (descendants of the First Nation that Pocahontas was a member of, and--notably--pretty much the sole legal exemption to Virginia's especially notorious "One Drop" law back in the Jim Crow days that classified anyone with discernable non-white ancestry as "coloured under law") and the Mattaponi First Nation.  Let's just say that Europeans did a VERY thorough job of ethnically cleansing the future site of Washington, DC of any groups they might have to respect treaty rights towards.)

LessO2: Nabb1: I loathe the Redskins, and I think it would be great for a sports team to honor the Tuskegee Airmen, but seeing as how there is virtually no geographic/cultural relationship between the two, it seems like an odd name for a team in the greater Washington, DC area.

Knows what you mean....
[www.sports-logos-screensavers.com image 850x637]

They started as the New Orleans Jazz. There the name made sense. The team was bought and moved to Utah, where the name no longer makes sense. It's like how the Lakers originally played in Minneapolis/St.Paul, where the name made sense, then the NBA expanded and they were moved to LA where it doesn't make sense.

But then they'd be offending muslims and jews. They might have to go with the Washington Whiteys, nobody cares if white people are offended.

I don't usually have a problem with team names that draw off of names for Native Americans, but redskin is a flat out derogatory term.  I don't think there's anything wrong with calling a team the seminoles or the braves or even the Indians, but calling a team the redskins is pretty close to calling a team the n*ggers.

Cagey B: The name "Redskins", along with Chief Wahoo in MLB, is pretty embarassingly racist. I'm pretty sure even the "hurr PC oppression" mouthbreathers know better. There's ways to incorporate Native American iconography into your team without reaching for obviously deregatory terms and images.

Compared to Chief Wahoo, "Redskins" is positively progressive.

New name = new merchandise. Think of all the jerseys, replica helmets, blankets, popups, grills, necklaces, hats, socks, earmuffs, rocking chairs, and whatever other stuff they've slapped the team logo on over the years. Now think about fans who already own all that stuff having a reason to buy it over again. Learn from George Lucus... selling the same thing over again in a slightly different variation is a license to print money.

Plus they could warehouse most of their existing merchandise, causing panic buying by fans who want one last item with the old logo and name. In a few years, they can start selling the warehoused crap as limited edition retro merchandise.

Washington Delegates
Washington Tidals (as in Tidal Basin)
Washington Soldiers

As much as I despise the Redskins, I don't feel like any of those names were worthy enough to replace the Redskins. If they do change their name (which I think they should, it's an anachronism at this point) it better be really good because they're such a traditional team.

It's not so much an insult, but it bugs me when non-Americans call all Americans "Yanks". To me it refers to people from the northeast, and as someone who grew up in the south (and lives in the west coast) it would annoy me to be called that. The Confederates were assholes, but don't call me a Yankee. Plus Europeans use "Yank" in a very coonty manner most of the time.

The NFL forces players to buy back their remaining jersey stock if they change their names.  I would guess they would ask the teams to do that as well if they changed their name.  That would be a helluva a financial barrier.

This reminds me of the old joke about the NBA team (I can't remember who did it):

This week, the Washington Bullets announced that they were changing their name, since they did not want to have a team name that was synonymous with crime. From here on out, instead of being known as the "Washington Bullets", they will simply be known as the "Bullets."

The Redskins aren't in DC, they're in Landover, Maryland.  So all the Council is doing is making it less likely that the Redskins will EVER come back.  Also, "Redtails" is the STUPIDEST name in the NFL, short of Browns.

Finally, any city who thinks that "Wizards" is a better name for a team than "Bullets" doesn't deserve to get a football team back. Ever.

At least has football history behind it.  I guess next up will be the feminist outcry that the Buffalo Bills need to chose a gender neutral name.
