BSOD, that's like a cross between Blue Man Group and an offshoot of Anthrax, right?  'Cuz that would be awesome.

That looks cool, but...

a) what's the doo-dad going to cost?

b) how much processing power will be taken away from the on-screen gaming to run this?

"We hope", "we think".

or

We don't actually have anything ready to ship, so here's a mock of what it COULD do, however because this is both kinda cool and the public may show a likelihood to use it we're going to put it in the same round hole we threw the Courier tablet concept down.

I will care when this is on the trade floor of a show, being demo'd live.  Until then it is as fully fictional as say... the Playstation 4's specifications or indeed the XB720.

Meh, the X-Box 720 (stupid name) is looking more and more like the PS 3. Hyped, really cool gee whiz tech, but really sucks at doing the one thing I want it to do, which is gaming. I think I'm going to buy the PS4 before I buy the 720.

Stop. Thinking.

Or actually START. That might be good to.

There is zero reason at all to have made any decisions about the PS4 and 720. None. We don;t know ANYTHING for sure. At the very least wait till both compaines actually officaly announce specs and features. Then judge away.

Erm... doesn't do that on my Mac.  At least not that I've noticed.  I do agree that the generic icon for "not a mac" is a bit dated though.

This isn't new, there was a video of this concept like... 6 months ago? Looks cool though. I think it would add to the effect really well and really immerse you in a game.

However, as cool as this is, if there is an always-on requirement, Microsoft you will never get my cashmoney, yo.

^^ THIS ^^

All the Sony fans missed the really important announcement.  It came a day after the large press event.  None of what you saw was real beyond the Vita XL, that's official.  From Sony of America's CEO.

Microsoft haven't said word one about their new consoles capabilities, I don't think they've even officially said it exists yet (but there is a large press event scheduled soon which most think IS the official reveal).

Now, what we think about both firms marketing efforts... that we can judge.

I played the crap out of my NES, SNES, N64 (well, Goldeneye), Gamecube, Playstation 2, Xbox, Xbox 360, and a few portable systems along the way.  I never really went high end with PCs and therefore didn't play those very much.

With all the shiat surrounding the next gen, I think I'm joining the glorious PC master race.  My favorite games this gen were Bethesda games and I think I'd like the mod community.  I don't want my console to take over my living room when I have other things that do all that stuff better.

2013-04-30 12:10:21 PM
The thing with the Illumiroom is that you also need a ceiling mounted HD projector in addition to your big flat screen TV and your brand new Xbox. Is anyone actually thinking that it would take off?

Considering MS has yet to release any information on the new Xbox why would they have to refute something that they never said.  I have no issues with always on, but if you want to have fits about it maybe they'll make it where you just need to have it connected monthly.  I love how people complain about it then will fire up the xbox and play online.

"But my internet goes out a lot", that's why I can see them having a basic DRM that doesn't care if your internet drops for a specific time period as long as it comes back on in X amount of days.

I agree, I play a ton of Black Ops and whatever yearly CoD that comes out and I couldn't imagine having to worry about what's on the outside of my screen.  I already play on a large LCD and sit close enough to not see the walls and there isn't enough time to be looking around your room in a game like that.  I would like to see a bit more on what it can bring to the table but it is pretty slick tech.

i've heard "sources" confirm always online, not always online and (the most likely, imo) no always online requirement for the console itself, but the individual game publishers can require it on a per title basis (which is the same as PC games these days, so while i'm no fan of the practice i'm not going to single out the xbox for particular ire.)

Actually Microsoft confirmed this yesterday.  They also announced two price pints for the system- a $599 version where you don't have to pay an additional $10 a month for Xbox live, and a $399 version where you do.  And the system will not work without it, even for watching DVDs.

So MS think flashing lights and loud sounds are the future of gaming?

That looks terrible.  One way or the other it's a a resource hog.  An no, it's not going to add anything to gaming or immersion.

Why not throw your weight behind the Oculus Rift?

That main and basic flaw in your reasoning is that currently being connected is not a requirement.
That is everyone's issue. "Always on" means required. Sure my current xbox's wifi is on 100% of the time I'm playing. But I can turn it off anyime I please, and continue to play assassin's creed like nothing.

A console that says "connection failure" when I try to play a game is a console that will never be in my house.

Disregard that, I misread my source and can't call this a true confirmation.  Toss it back in the rumor pile.

Still, this system looks like shiat.

Explain one farking benefit of always-online to the user. Just one. There is absolutely nothing good that comes from it on the user's side.

And if you had paid attention at all, you'd know the "But my internet goes out a lot!" reasoning has more to do with THEIR side than the user. My internet works fine, but I don't want to be locked out of my console because Activision just released CoD 29 and the servers are being flooded with 5 million+ players at once.

You're right though, Microsoft doesn't have to refute any rumors. But considering all it would take is a "the next Xbox will not be always-online" to make a lot of customers happy, their silence on the matter is not a good sign.

It's a novelty item.  It's not suppose to sell to every owner.

They are targeting the people who have Denon 7.2 channel AV system, a 60" LED TV and Bowers and Wilkins 800 series speakers.

They are not targeting the people who have 20" TVs with a Altec Lansing laptop speakers.

It would be nice if the people with Pioneer 5.1 channel AV system, a 42" TV and Bose speaks purchased it, but they don't expect everyone in that range to order it either.

In other words, it's more of a mid to high-end item.  Not a low end item.  I'd expect it would be priced accordingly as well.
