The guy who did it never went to jail? A suspended sentence? WTF? You stab some in a pre meditated crime in front of literally millions of witnesses and you don't go to jail?

The prosecution appealed the slap on the wrist conviction. Result, slap on the wrist was upheld. Steffi Graff went on to a long successful career and poor Monica took 27 months off and was never the same. Sadly the German troll who did the stabby won.

Oh yes Monica sued the German tennis association, lost and had costs awarded against her......

Well, in the guy's defense, that constant grunt-squeal after every shot was annoying as hell.

*shudder*  Seriously, it looks like she's not even "in there" at that moment, as if her entire inner spirit just moved out and left an empty shell.

What happened to Seles is a terrible shame. She had a shining career in front of her stolen away by some unhinged penisface who didn't even get a proper sentence. Even in the case of insanity, people like that should be institutionalized for longer than two years.

But he didn't even get *that*. He got a suspended sentence - essentially he was told "You're fine as long as you don't do it again".

well, has he done it again?  clearly the system works. case closed. lets move on.

joking....

whoa, didn't know much about the legal back-ground of this incident. I didn't think much of it at the time, I was a teenager and not a tennis fan but now the whole thing seems pretty awful. I do recall Seles never really able to get back to the top of the tennis rankings. Poor girl, hopefully time is healing her pain.

and 80 years ago today: Willie was born! Happy birthday Willie

Someone with the details at hand can fill this in. But was he judged to be crazy at the time of the attack? Did whatever was making him crazy get permanently addressed during his two years of institutionalization? If so, I don't see what purpose keeping him locked in a nuthouse serves.

Not at all.  He was convicted of the assault and was given a suspended sentence, meaning that he didn't have to actually go to prison to serve his sentence as long as he didn't go all stabby again.

From the wiki:

Parche was charged following the incident, but was not jailed because he was found to be psychologically abnormal, and was instead sentenced to two years' probation and psychological treatment.

So it seems he was crazy. Am I mistaken here?

Huh, just did some checking and looks like Wikipedia is correct.  Apparently, being violently mentally ill means you get a one-time free stabby pass in Germany.

She went to the police, like a good Yugoslav. This man was brought to trial. The judge sentenced him to two years in prison, and suspended the sentence. Suspended sentence! He went free that very day! She stood in the courtroom like a fool, and that bastard, he smiled at her. Then she said to her parents, "For justice, we must go to Don Corleone."

I'm pretty sure most developed countries have judicial systems that recognize on some level that one is not culpable for things done while crazy in the same manner as things done while sane.

Yeah but it's still not justice for this guy to get away scot free for stabbing a woman and ruining her life. At some point excuses for violent behavior shouldn't be good enough, depending on the severity of the act. There's a difference between a retard punching someone for touching his ears and a crazy guy stabbing a pro tennis player and ruining her career.

Simona Halep....a low-ranked pro tennis player...she has since had the funbags taken down a couple sizes (or more) because of the back problems they were causing....

If a person is that dangerous, they shouldn't be given f*cking probation: they should be institutionalized for the FULL duration of the suspended sentence.

Nicely done. I started to get it halfway through, and then was pleased with the payoff.
