That's pretty cool.  I wonder how it distinguishes between things it can walk through without interrupting it, and things that it has to walk around.  IE, that it can push through tall grasses or maybe low hanging thin branches, but it needs to go around trees.

Holy crap, that technology progressing quickly.

All of our equipment kicks ass with low-grade conflicts, but if a WWIII situation breaks out, what do we do if China or someone just EMPs everything?  Are we training in conventional rifle & bullet warfare enough?

They really needed to put a Cylon glowing back-and-forth light on the front of that thing. Just for fun.

Do you still have to put the back legs into your bootlegs and walk it up to the edge of a cliff?

I'm wondering what it does if its human goes into a space too small for it to follow. Does it seek an alternate path?

That thing sure looks like it expends a crap ton of energy with those front backwards legs.

I want one as a pet. Walking thru the neighborhood with one will freak people out.

2:20 in, ok now I'm impressed.

Suprised they havent covered it in kevlar and strapped a SAW to it yet.  Ship it off to Iraq for field testing.

I wonder if shiat like this makes China nervous.  Or japan snicker.

Galloping Galoshes: Great, we're reinventing the dog mule.

That's the whole point of these.  Give each soldier the ability to tote hundreds of pounds of supplies with him.  The LRRPs in Nam and the long-deployment special forces in Afghanistan were already very successful - imagine what they could have done with some of these to tote around ammunition, commo gear, and lots and lots of extra batteries.

I'm sure they're working on the noise generated by that thing, but still, I'm thinking a squad of Marines in a hot zone would be at a disadvantage with the big dog making even half that noise.

The sound made me anxious as I could not hear anything else around it.

Had a grin on my face for 90% of that... once the idea of a random moose coming out of nowhere and trying to mount that thing hit my warped mind.  And, it trying to stay upright.

/motor and gear whining in agony with the weight of a moose, humping it hard and throwing it off balance.
//now THAT would be a test!!!  Hits on YouTube alone would pay for another couple years' worth of work on it....

Honest question, if anyone knows the answer:

Why legs instead of tank tracks/multiple wheels, etc?

Because they can!

Seriously though, wouldn't it be hard for tank tracks and/or wheels to roll over and right itself?  And how about going over multiple logs, I would think they would get hung up more often if they had tracks/wheels.

It's a DARPA project. Tracks and wheels have been done. 4 legs makes it "advanced."

deployable models will use fuel cells.  this is still research.

Because there are places where treads can't go. It's the reason pack mules and horses are stilled used by US military in places like Afghanistan.

It walks like a fat old dog wearing rubber boots. It's kind of awesome.

2013-04-30 06:37:04 PM
Very impressive indeed (and they've started using much less noisy generators).
I wonder how much human intervention it needed when it fell over in the mud.
Oh yes, and Subby, I'd be quite happy to have something like this following me around, particularly if it did the heavy lifting.
It reminded me of Pratchett's Luggage.

I wonder if that type of tech (the verbal commands) can transfer easily to other platforms, like the snake-bot or the dragon runner.

Awesome.  The company that built the hound from Fahrenheit 451 have built their first Cylon too.
