As opposed to domesticated mice?

Because when I think of mice, the ones owned by humans are a pretty small minority.

Between them, the alligators in the sewers and the C.H.U.D.S., the next time I'm in NY I'm heading into gangland territory where it's safe.

While mice are evolving, the english language appears to be devolving.

Over centuries of development, cities have rewritten the rules of survival for the organisms that live there -- and researcher is beginning to prove that some critters are just learning to cope, they're actually undergoing genetic change.

Researcher?
Which is it?  Are they learning to cope or are they evolving?

But as Munshi-South's proves that the urban jungle and the jungle jungle really aren't so different in terms of evolution.

Huh?

Sometimes you really have to wonder if 4th graders' homework assignments are being posted.

When they evolve warfarin resistance, they will be ready to make their move. We'll have to dynamite the bridges and flood the tunnels to save the rest of America.

That was my reaction, as well.  "Feral" mice?  Like feral coyotes and foxes?

The feral rodents in Davis have evolved into something far worse.  They have significantly modified their behavior and appearance to increase their food supply.  These rodents have become arboreal, diurnal, and have disguised their hideous hairless rat tails.  In this disguise they beg or steal food.  Boldly walking onto tables and taking food right out students' mouths.  When saner minds try to exterminate this odious, disease ridden population we are blocked by student groups.  Trapping, shooting, and poisoning are forbidden.  My proposal for a new school hat using their skins was not even considered.  In defeat, I have considered aiding their evolution into something less dangerous, something cuter.  I will encourage students to make size exclusion feeders, so that only the smallest will have constant access to food.  We will also build puzzle feeders that reward dancing, pratfalls, defecation is designated areas, and basic sign language.

Subby, (and some commenters here) please don't use words you don't understand.  Go look up the word "feral".

This--unless Mrs. Frisby's ancestors are breaking out of labs somewhere, the mice in the article are not feral--hell, they aren't even an introduced species like Norway rats or house mice :D

(And not even the rats are feral in New York City--hell, I can't really think of an invasion by actual feral mice escaping domestication.  Lagomorphs, sure (cref: rabbit plagues in Australia) but about the only case I know of re legitimately feral rodents involved the introduction of nutria to Louisiana--those DID legitimately go feral as they had been introduced for the fur industry.  All of our other introduced rodents made it here as stowaways on boats and the like, and aren't escaped pets or livestock.)

/and now I have the little song about when rats go to mars from the Ratatouille DVD in my head
//will be more worried when NYC rats start evolving something more than bitty nubs for rat thumbs

Meh, I worked at a Shakespeare journal back in my undergrad days...we actually got manuscripts from professors in pencil, with typos...so nothing surprises me.  I've also seen recorded land deeds, in pencil, with typos...
