Almost all famines are preventable and are about resource allocation. We are in the 21st century.

When they're not imploding due to revolution.  You're thinking of Ethiopia, which Norman Borlaug tried to save back in the 1980s and kept farking themselves back into poverty.

Because the relocation of your malnourished family is a simple process in areas with few cars, few paved roads, and no money.

2013-04-29 06:52:09 PM
Sadly there are still too many bad memories of the clusterfark that happened the last time we tried to help Somali's. Nobody wants to touch the place.

Also I think most people are just burned out on tragedies. Seems like at any given moment there are a dozen horrible things going on in the world crying out for our attention. After awhile it just gets to be too much and you tune it all out.

Replace Sports, Geek & Entertainment with Politics. Fark would be so much better. /s

The 4th highest total fertility rate in the world.  Yeah.  The problem isn't food production. It's babby production.

2013-04-29 06:54:40 PM
Famines, at least the biggest ones, are primarily man made, and Somali is a prime example of that. Having the guns means having the food

How?
They had some fishing but that got destroyed by European Nuclear Waste.
They're already hungry and can't even afford shoes, and most of the neighboring countries have hunger/poverty issues and genocide of their own to deal with.
Are you willing to take them in?

Why not we are already taking all of the Mexicans. Let's make it really interesting.

Looking at it from another angle, American mothers always have to use use some region as an example to get their kids to eat their Brussels sprouts.

From the amount of beer cans the local Somalis leave around, the survivors seem to be doing okay.

TheShavingofOccam123: The 4th highest total fertility rate in the world.  Yeah.  The problem isn't food production. It's babby production.

The problem's never food _production_, even when population isn't an issue it's generally food _distribution_.  There's always somewhere in the world making too much food and willing to sell or give it to you... usually the US, given it's a major component of our foreign policy.

Problems arise when some jackass intentionally puts himself between the supplier and the actual families on the ground.  In the case of Somalia it's warring factions and warlords that intentionally want people to starve because otherwise their guns have no incentive to stick with them.

The Earth is pretty indifferent, young Malthusian. And the amount of food per capita is far higher on the right side of your graph. Feel free to cut our number by one, though.

and also pirates.

that place is too messed up to fix with food aid.

There is no Christian God. A good and benevolent god would never allow that kind of suffering. Perhaps the Hindus are correct when they say that the creative and destructive forces in the universe are perfectly balanced. Perhaps the atheists are correct. But regardless, the Christians are incorrect.

Hindus can't eat a good steak or hamburger.

Muslims and Jews can't have bacon.

thus, proof that God is a Christian God!

It's horrible but honestly, what is the average North American supposed to do about it? Aid seems to end up in the hands of the wrong people. If we can't give them money or food, WTF can we do?
