Yeah, of course, but I mean, you've got a pretty good idea though, right?  Eh?  AMIRITE? /nudge nudge, wink wink

/douche

I know for a certainty the standard which God will use to judge. God didn't hide the ball:

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John 3:16-18

But wait....  so you know which people believe in God and which ones don't?  I thought that you were just saying that not everyone who says they were Christians were "real Christians" by your definition?  Sounds to me like the only requirement is believing in God, not "abstain thyself from the ass of other men."

Look, anyone who claims to have the monopoly on the truth is either selling something or looking for excuses to hate.  I respect your right to believe what you like, but claiming to have the entire pie of Christianity is horse-patootie.  Christianity runs a wide river from conservatives like yourself to liberals like the Unitarians.  There's a lot of middle ground.  And if your only criteria is believing in Jesus, you gotta open that tent a little wider, son.

DmGdDawg: Serious Black: DmGdDawg: Serious Black: DmGdDawg: Vodka Zombie: No one in America is required or obligated to live in accordance with the Bible.

Why do Christians have such a hard time understanding this simple, simple thing?

It goes beyond stupidity.  Even the most intellectually damaged human being can grasp the concept of free will.  Christians just can't, and yet they think they are worth listening to.

Way to beat up that straw man!

I haven't heard anyone say Jason Collins shouldn't be allowed to do whatever he wants. He came out as gay and was received, for the most part, positively by the public. Broussard didn't say Collins should be put in prison or castrated. He said that engaging in homosexual (or premarital heterosexual) sex is a sin. Broussard having an opinion you don't agree with isn't the same as you being "obligated to live in accordance with the bible." Free will doesn't mean you can do whatever you want and everyone has to approve of it. Lots of things are morally wrong but not illegal.

You know, self-identified Christians back in the medieval era used to think that engaging in any kind of sexual activity, even exclusively procreative sexual activity with a spouse, was a sin that infinitely distanced you from the pure and uncorrupted God. They believed that the only way to be a devout follower of Christ was to be completely chaste and celibate because that's what God and Jesus are. Were these people not Real Christians™?

Thanks for the made up history lesson. People in medieval days who didn't believe the bible weren't Christians anymore than people today who don't believe the bible.

How do you know they didn't believe the Bible (whatever the Hell that means)? How do you know that any specific person living today who claims to be a Christian doesn't really believe the Bible?

Let's go with an extreme example: Westboro Baptist Church. The church and its members self-identify as Christian. They consistently cite passages from the Bible during ...

God will ultimately judge. Sure, there are people who claim to believe the bible who really don't. There are people like that in every church and even in may pulpits. The bible warns against such people and there are certainly warning signs, but only God knows someone's heart.

That's exactly my point (and the point I think several others are trying to make as well). Presuming that an omnipotent God really does exist and that God judges all people upon their death as worthy of spending eternity in Heaven, God is going to be the one who decides. Not you. Not me. Not anyone else who has ever lived or ever will live. Not any holy book that has inevitably been tainted by human hands. Assuming that your religion is correct and every other religion is incorrect is one of the most bombastic, pompous, and arrogant beliefs you can ever hold.

DmGdDawg: Who is this mythical Christian you speak of that is saying that people in America are "required or obligate to live in accordance with the Bible."? I don't know any Christian, myself included, who thinks that or even suggested that. Saying "homosexuality is a sin" isn't the same as saying people shouldn't be allowed to be homosexuals in America.

Then why say it if not to judge and condemn?

Is it just to make you feel "morally superior" and remind everyone how right you think you are as you cower and hide your petty ignorance and hatred behind your precious holy book?

Yes, I called you a douche.  I never claimed to be open-minded though.  I respect your worship of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or whatever, right up to the point that it gives you the authority to judge other people, which you just stated a few posts ago is the entire point.

I am done with you.  You've stated that the only point in your belief system is judging and condemning, so you have said everything for me.  Enjoy your "religion" and justification for your hate, judgment and condemnation.  I'm going to go back to hanging out with "Christians" who believe that the basis of their religion (that you have stated you don't recognize) is love.

Don't worry, I will ask them to pray for you.

boom

Well, that's what the left does. It's what makes them superior to all. Then they tell us all how much.

All this for a scrub that has sat on the bench for six teams, and knows he needs some kind of boost to get another contract. Which, he will, with Stern on the phone to everybody demanding someone step up.

And the guy will be elevated to all-time level now by the media. Yay, media.

Now, every team in every league will be expected to have a gay player who's out and all flag wavey about it. Those that don't will be forced to. Yay, America.

Now, applaud it all or get branded as someone with a mental issue. phobic

I just want my teams to win. I couldn't care less who's gay or whatever. Of course, not caring is an insult to the pc crowd. You're supposed to care.

You apparently judge it to be a terrible thing that Broussard believes homosexuality is wrong. I judge it to be fine and actually agree with him. I judge the bible to be true and authoritative. You judge is to be non-authoritative. Nothing in the world wrong with being judgmental. I don't pretend that all beliefs are equally right, and I reject the notion that people who reject that bible are Christians. Yes, we all make judgments.  No, not all Christians look at judgment as the entire basis of their religion.

I don't give a rip what Broussard believes.  I don't even really care what he says.  However, he's pretty dumb if he thinks there won't be consequences to saying that while at work.

The basis of Christianity is love, not judgment.  People like you give the other billion Christians in the world (the bulk of which you don't accept as Christians) a bad name in much the same way the Muslim fundamentalist terrorists give the religion of Islam a bad name.

No one in America is required or obligated to live in accordance with the Bible.

Why do Christians have such a hard time understanding this simple, simple thing?

They don't. In fact one of them simply pointed out someone isn't one of them and you kids got all butt hurt *apt term if there ever was one* over it.

Why do atheists allow themselves to get tied up in such knots over it? If someone tells me I'll never to Atlantis or Middle Earth, I'd laugh and walk away.

Actually, my issue was with a certain someone making narrow-minded statements in the name of all of Christianity, which is just asinine.  There are many Christians that are quite welcome to homosexuals, and I know many very devout gays and lesbians who have leadership roles in their church.  My point was that statements like the ones made by DmGdDawg only further the perception that Christianity is nothing but old white bigots.

In fact, I think I'm going to start making statements about what All White People think.  I'm sure I will be right and there won't be any dissension from my view.

Personally, I'm not concerned with getting to heaven or Atlantis.  But as an academic student of religion, it really chaps my hide when one fark-tard speaks the loudest and gets to paint with a broad brush.  As I said up-thread, Islam suffers the same fate when fundamentalist Muslims act in very public ways that are not in accordance with their beliefs.

DmGdDawg makes the world a sadder place.  That is my point.

Oh, and he's a douche.

But I don't look back on my days in the church with bitterness. I learned a lot of good things, like how Jesus loved everyone, but threw the money changers out of the temple. How he was all, "Hey, you don't have to slaughter goats for my dad any more." And stuff like,"Maybe we shouldn't stone our children to death for misbehaving any more." I mean, he had some really good ideas. Being dickwads to homos isn't in the contract, though. It's none of your business & it's none of Chris Broussard's business. Just let people be & we can all live in harmony. Your faith ends where other people's begins.

I knew I had you favorited for a reason...

mjbok: Skywolf the Scribbler: Dude, the cool thing about Christianity is that we can have forgiving grace even if we live in sin--after all, nobody's perfect. I sure as hell have some ghastly sin I could tell you all about...

The thing about Christianity is you can't be forgiven for a "sin" if you don't repent and fully intend to do it again.

Ephesians 2:1-10

All people can have assurance of salvation, even I, a perverted cur according to Christians and atheists alike...

Chris Broussard has every right to say what he said as long as ESPN wants to employ him, just as if ESPN wanted to employ somebody who said that Chris Broussard shouldn't be able to marry a white woman or drink from the white mans fountain.

Di Atribe: DmGdDawg: But at least be academically honest about what it says.

OnlyM3: Why do atheists allow themselves to get tied up in such knots over it? If someone tells me I'll never to Atlantis or Middle Earth, I'd laugh and walk away.

...and if they say "Oh, and I have a highly effective lobby that's working towards the ultimate goal of having everyone who will never go to Atlantis or Middle Earth executed", what would you say then?

/Because the same evangelical Christians who condemn this guy do have that goal.  And they've supported plans to implement such punishments in places like Ghana.
