hardinparamedic: sloshed_again: Russia needs the land.

After all they are so small, and Japan is soooo big.

They just need some breathing room, some  liebensbaum.

Geopolitical leverage is all about control of energy and Japan ain't got many options. It's going all in on methane hydrate.

I think Germany just finished paying reparations for WW1 a year or two ago. Now maybe the U.S. and Britain can issue a formal apology to Iran for toppling a democratically elected government at the request of British Petroleum. And maybe monkeys will fly out of my butt.

Omahawg: not terribly surprising. Japan's defeat of russia in '05 signaled there was a new player on the block and the czar's days were numbered.

bitter feelings die hard, with a vengeance.

Given the way the Russians treated the Japanese during World War II and the atrocities committed against Japanese Prisoners, I'd say they got their vengeance pretty good.

The fun thing is, had Japan not surrendered to the United States, there's a good chance that a large portion of the island might have been Russian throughout the Cold War. The Russians were planning to Zerg the Island for themselves.

NK will be involved in this.  Japan will cede a little on the islands in exchange for Russia ostracizing NK or deporting their sneaky lumber slave camps across the Russian border.
