(Deadspin)   Here's everything ESPN covered before mentioning Jason Collins. As you might guess from the disgusting video of Skip Bayless mid-comment, it's a whole lot of Tebow (video)   (deadspin.com) divider line 84

What did he do?

Went on air with his claims that homosexuality is an "open rebellion to God"

ManateeGag: So, why is it a big deal that the dude is gay?

Because we live in a society that still has a very big problem with gay people.

I gotta say, sometimes "coming out" is a good thing.  Just tells me who the closed-minded fools are so I can start ignoring them.

fastbow: Interestingly, Rush Limbaugh had more coverage of this story than either of the sports talk stations in town.

Can't decide if that's good or bad...

What was Limbaugh's take on the story, there are times he can be very insightful when it comes to sports.

Thanks. Sheesh he looks like he's enraged when he goes on his little spiel. His head is twitching and shaking. I dunno, maybe he does that all the time, but he looks pretty unhappy.

So, ESPN has missed out on their big NBA mode

WHAT DOES LEBRON JAMES THINK OF THIS

/his twitter is off for the playoffs so they have no story

What does Tim Tebow think about Collins?

If Collins could sleep with a gay Tebow, would he?

Is Skip Bayless the next to come out as a Tebowsexual?

So many questions!!!

But really, the crazy reactions of people over this will be the most entertaining (and likely despicable) thing in sports this year.

Oddly, the best comments coming from Ron Artest (from the other thread)?

Whether it's a free country or not, you should be free to act as you want to do as long as it's not violent. No matter what it is. I came here in a Cookie Monster shirt because I wanted to, and I was going to wear the pants. But I thought you guys were going to judge me. I was going to wear the hat too. But I thought you guys would judge me. I didn't want Mitch [Kupchak] to judge me. So that's why I didn't wear the hats and the pants. But I should've wore it. You should be free to do and act how you want to act.

And of course he followed it with:
"I've got gay friends, gay people that work for me. It's not anything out of the norm."

/it's his normal off the wall style, but it hits the main points.

Don't sell sports short. Who knows how many drinking and driving, road rage, guns in clubs incidents we'll put together.

But perhaps you're right. The biggest group of assholes we listen to on a daily basis besides pols being told that dudes that like dudes are amongst them, for reals this time!

NakedReporta: On the flip side, we could look at it like this - a 12-year NBA journeyman coming out of the closet isn't that big of a deal. And really, doesn't that say something about how far we've progressed as a society?

Now, if Tebow came out, I think the collective head of ESPN would asplode.

Tebow has already been outted...as a terrible quarterback.

Roughly, it went something like this:

"I had no idea who this guy was until today. People who know more about basketball than I do say he's a mediocre at best player looking at the end of his career. It smells like an attention-grabbing stunt designed to breathe life into a dying basketball career while grabbing some endorsement money, or the setup for an anti-discrimination lawsuit against the NBA."

He was rather cynical about the whole situation, gravitating towards the fact that it was a low-risk, high-reward gamble. If he gets signed - I personally have no idea but Rush said he didn't have  contract - he'll have a payday in media attention, and a legacy. If he doesn't, he has grounds for an anti-discrimination suit.

From listening to Rush, I'd say if pressed on the issue, he would doubt the sincerity of Collins' homosexuality.

/Rush was the only station on my presets not at commercial at the time, or going on about Tebow, and I thought it was interesting he had a take at all.
//His station is on presets because it airs Spurs games
///Not a regular listener. No sir.

I like PTI, that's about it.

Oh, and they haven't managed to screw up the 30 for 30 documentary series.

...or maybe not

Pretty much just avoid ESPN and focus on Grantland. If you think that 30 for 30 is basically with Grantland it makes sense. Maybe they should steal PTI too

2013-04-29 05:54:02 PM

NakedReporta: All that aside, yes, I agree, ESPN sandbagged the story initially. I was just trying to look at it from a more enlightened perspective, one where being a male pro team athlete who happens to enjoy the company of other men isn't such a big f-ing deal. But you're right, we're not there yet, so it is a big deal.

I completely agree that it would be great if the Collins announcement was a non-event, I think we're closer to that than a lot of people thing.  Then of course Chris Broussard comes along telling us all how much God hates gay people but apparently loves judgmental dipshiats, so here we are.

Tebow's release shouldn't have even received "breaking news" status on the bottomline scroll, but as long as we allow ESPN to dictate what's important and what isn't, we'll continue to be subjected to this crap.

Grantland actually has writers. Sure, many of them tend to stray into the depths of navel-gazing if the topic is a bit dull, but, yeah.

And this is precisely why Collins coming out is a big deal.  If a senior wirter at a major sports publication is going national with this crap then no, we have progressed to teh point where a persons sexuality is not a big deal.

Well he does have a point about it being towards the end of his career so it is a low risk move, the rest not so much.

ESPN is a coonty network of hacks with as much journalistic integrity as Rush Limbaugh.  fark them.

If he doesn't get a contract, could he sue the NBA for discrimination even though he sucks on and off the court?

Autarky: If he doesn't get a contract, could he sue the NBA for discrimination even though he sucks on and off the court?

I doubt it. He'd have to be able to prove discrimination during the job search. I mean, a team would basically have to tell him that's why they aren't offering him a deal as opposed to the likely scenario that they won't offer him a deal because he's past his prime.

Right now, I'd say he'll get picked up by a team in a major market that needs a PR shot in the arm, play for a year, then get relegated to the European leagues until he retires.

ariseatex: Two weeks ago they got praise for their Marathon bombing coverage, focusing on the real story (the injured) while the main networks did nothing but speculate who did what.

Yeah...good way of throwing out all that good will, ESPN.

Wasn't the majority of their coverage that day a direct feed from Boston's ABC affiliate?

Tiberius Gracchus: NakedReporta: seumasokelly: I think that if ESPN had broken the story, we'd have had a 3-hour special in primetime. Since it was SI, it's a non-event.

Agreed. I'm just saying we could look at it like that. I think the fact that it was a 35-year-old vet who's essentially a free-agent second center made it easier for ESPN to say, "Meh." Not trying to negate the import of this, but I think we can agree that had it been a guy still under contract that was a starter or a 6th or 7th man, ESPN runs that story first, Tebow be damned. At least, I'd like to think ESPN still has a modicum of journalistic integrity. Could be wrong on that. There's an equally good chance this story doesn't make Pg 1 of the NYT, either, FWIW.

35 y/o journeyman > Tebow

Tebow got Denver just as deep into the playoffs as Manning did, didn't he?

LL316: Tebow got Denver just as deep into the playoffs as Manning did, didn't he?

Yeah, if only Tebow was still there, he would have summoned Jesus Christ to play free safety instead of Rahim Moore.
