Fire at civilian airliners, fine.  Use of Sarin, fine.  Syria is like the worlds blind spot.

2013-04-29 01:30:52 PM
Hey Syria, it stops being a civil war when you shoot at other countries.

/Don't poke the bear, or shoot SAMs at it

2013-04-29 01:31:19 PM
The pilots managed to maneuver the plane in time however, "saving the lives of passengers."

Hmmm, in a 200-passenger plane?  Sounds fishy.

Putin is gonna flip...

2013-04-29 01:31:33 PM
Why would you fly over a country with an on-going civil war where they have surface to air missiles at their disposal?

Its not like Syria is hard to fly around.

russians have a nasty habit of stopping fights by beating the shiat out of both participants.

We have to get Russia involved somehow.

Why would you fly civilian aircraft over Syria? There's a war going on there.

More like the plane fell out of the sky and they needed an excuse for their crappy Russian death traps.

I've got a great idea! Let's fire RPGs at any plane in the air. It's genious! No one but enemies would fly over Syria right now.

/ I'd bet gold to lead that it was the rebels

We'll take a good cop back cop approach.
Now to decide which is the US and which is Russia

Depending on how high the plane was (probably high, in cruise), the tech level of the missile (probably not that advanced), the skill of the pilots (likely former military, trained in evading missiles), and the amount of time they had (did they see the launch?), its actually pretty feasible.  Not chances I'd want to bet my life on, but they probably had a pretty good fighting chance.  Airliners aren't capable of a whole lot, but they and their pilots can do stuff a lot more exciting than you'll see on any regular passenger flight.

So the first 15 minutes of the flight was awesome and the rest was tedious and boring?

That's one reason to suspect the CIA. Another is, they missed the plane.

No kidding.  Who wrote this article?  I'm using the term "article" very loosely in this sense as this sounds like some story that one guy saw something, told another guy, who then told another guy who heard it from a friend who...  heard it from a friend who...

Any word from the pilots, or passengers?  Did they actually see, or dodge anything?

Somehow I doubt RPGs can go up to those altitudes unless the Russian plane was piloted by Maverick and decided to do a low altitude flyby of Syria's towers.

RPGs self detonate after a couple thousand yards.

Russia is on Assad's side. I wouldn't be surprised if the rebels knowingly shot at a Russian passenger plane, less so unknowingly.

Some models do.  RPG-7s, even though popular, are far from the only model, especially in that part of the world.

I think this was a warning and the missiles missed on purpose. The rebels warning Russia, be on our side or else we can take your planes down. That is suicide for them. Dumb idiot moronic rebels

clearly, otherwise why would they shoot at ANY passenger plane. By now they can see the diff between military and passenger planes. If they didnt know it was russias then are they trying to kill ordinary Syrians in a passenger plane?

They're capable of the same things as most transports or bombers, from which they are based.

They also tend to fly pretty high for low-level SAMs.

It's too bad al Qaeda is in Syria. Maybe we will supplant them if we act as the rebels' air force for a few weeks.

Agree. Something with this story isn't adding up. But that's only if it were the rebels fired it and they used manpads. Passenger airliners usually cruise around 30 to 35K feet AGL. Most Western/Soviet bloc manpads are designed for defense against low flying aircraft. Wikipedia lists SA-24 maximum ceiling as 20K. I doubt very seriously that a pilot would see the launch from anywhere above 12K. Which means someone would have to have gotten on the horn and warned him. Which, even if that DID happen, how would "they" know about the launch? Even if they did know about the launch, how would they get word quickly enough to the pilot to start juking? (I'm also assuming that the Russians don't put early warning measures in their passenger liners...)

The only way this makes any sense is if it were fired from a AA site. And as far as I know, the rebels don't have any of those and wouldn't know what to do with them even if they did.

//no warranty. pure speculation

2013-04-29 01:57:25 PM
The SAMs were probably older tech missiles that lock on to the heat from the rear of the engine meaning if the pilot changed his heading enough he would have broken the lock.

Since it happened to Russia the US will call whomever is responsible a freedom fighter and not a terrorist.
