My only problem with this is where they said he played tough defense against Shaq.

2013-04-29 11:33:21 AM
I can't imagine the shame his family and loved ones are feeling; to have somebody so close to you humiliate you by openly admitting you're...a Washington Wizard.

2013-04-29 11:55:23 AM
Excellent headline.  And very fast work by the modmins to approve and post that.

2013-04-29 11:56:39 AM
This is great defensive strategy. He's a center, now players are going to think twice before trying to back him in.

2013-04-29 11:57:12 AM
Great headline, but again, why is this news?

JerseyTim: My only problem with this is where they said he played tough defense against Shaq.

I think he played fabulous defense.

2013-04-29 11:57:33 AM
I think it will be interesting to see who is next and how long it takes. Will this open the flood gates or will we have to wait a while while those who don't want to step forward wait and see what the reaction is like to Jason?

2013-04-29 11:57:38 AM
My headline involved dribbling balls.

/Sadness

2013-04-29 11:57:48 AM
Does give a different spin to the saying "Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards..."

2013-04-29 11:57:52 AM
At least he is happy. To be surrounded by all those naked athletes in the shower. Or something like that.

Like do gay male nurses love putting catheters in guys?

The perks of being s fudge packer on the job.

2013-04-29 11:58:19 AM
This is just like Jackie Robinson, except nobody really gives a shiat, but we all have to pretend like it's so brave.

2013-04-29 11:58:31 AM
A wizard is never gay, Frodo Baggins. Nor is he straight. He has sex with precisely whom he means to.

2013-04-29 11:58:49 AM
Now he can get drafted by the WNBA

2013-04-29 11:59:06 AM
So it seems he's a free agent and quite possibly might be at the end of his career anyways. Not to belittle this, but I want to see a player who actually intends to keep playing and deal with the adversity from the fans and other players.

Well they went from 20-46 last season (.303) to 29-53 (.354), so I guess It Gets Better.

And Nellie's will be rocking tonight.

/bar in DC for you non-Washington folks

In a way, this is sad this is news.

2013-04-29 11:59:38 AM
Isn't there some drama that supposed to drop soon about several current NFL players coming out?

2013-04-29 11:59:41 AM

Have you forgotten where you are?

An outstanding headline can make almost anything get greenlit, and this deserves it.

I don't know if that's the case. Would you be able to keep it in your pants if you were in charge of livestock?

It's not news, it's Fark.

vudukungfu: Great headline, but again, why is this news?

Given the multiple statements by players in many sports along the lines of "I refuse to play with gay teammates", it's news until they actually are forced to confront their bigotry.

2013-04-29 12:00:43 PM

vudukungfu: Great headline, but again, why is this news?

Because, sadly, this is unprecendented.

Big big props to Collins.  He will be be remembered forever for this.

first active player in the Big 4 to come out.  others came out after retiring (tualo, amaeche) and then you have the athletes in sports the traditional 18-39 male demo DGAF about:  that tennis lesbian, that soccer dude that came out about a month ago.

in other words, Collins is giong to spend the rest of his career -- all 2-4 years of it -- putting up with jackhole fans at away games 42 times a season.  pretty bold.

2013-04-29 12:00:55 PM
So that's why the Wizards bend over for all their opponents.

I see you've spent a lot of time thinking about this.

"- I baked for 33 years. "

Ozzy Osbourne said the same thing but I'm pretty sure he meant something different.

2013-04-29 12:02:02 PM
Gay pro athletes? shocking.

That's never happened before.

2013-04-29 12:02:07 PM
I feel like they could have used a different picture for the in-game photo....

Anyways though, my only issue with people making a big deal about this is they're playing this off as he's the first active in the 4 major sports... But he's a free agent, yes, he hasn't retired, but it's not like he's currently on a team and coming out, I feel like that would be a little different.

/Good for him though

Let's play a game!

2001-02: 10.7
2002-03: 9.9
2003-04: 10.0
2004-05: 8.6
2005-06: 5.5
2006-07: 3.0
2007-08: 3.4
2008-09: 3.3
2009-10: 0.9
2010-11: 5.4
2011-12: 3.7
2012-13: 3.0

Is it:

a) Jason Collins' points per game?
b) Jason Collins' rebounds per game?
c) Jason Collins' Player Efficiency Rating (League Average of 15)?

2013-04-29 12:02:18 PM
Ever heard of a parlor game called Three Degrees of Jason Collins? If you're in the league, and I haven't been your teammate, I surely have been one of your teammates' teammates. Or one of your teammates' teammates' teammates.

There's apparently a lot of NBA guys playing on his team. I hope they've all been using protection and playing it safe.

/remember, kids, when you play with someone, you've played with everyone they've played with before

Seriously. What you do in private is your business, I suppose, but to flaunt it in front of children as though it were something to be proud of... it's disgusting and unnatural. I want to know who recruited him into this perverted lifestyle. Probably some trusted male authority figure.

/but seriously, I hope he finally starts getting his fair share of sports-celebrity head starting tonight
//or, if I know gay men (and boy do I know gay men), within 30 seconds of the announcement

Because there are still many, many people who would have a huge problem with this, and they deserve to have their noses rubbed in it every chance we can get.

Not only that, he retired and flat out said "you can't be a gay professional soccer player. The coaches, other players, fans, etc., would eat you alive."

The announcement should be mine to make, not TMZ's.

Amen to that. Freaking TMZ.

/don't care that this dude is gay. He wouldn't hit on me anyway.

I remember when he and his twin brother were on Stanford's team and my Wildcats had to face them. Two 7 foot twin brothers on the same college team? Yeah, those were some beat-downs.

Yes, nobody (should) give a shiat at this point but no, had this happened 10 years ago it would be the leading story on SportsCenter.

Judging from the intellect expressed in his comment, his father could not.

ha, first thing i thought of too:  "wasn't he one of the twins frmo Stanford?"  they used to wear the Devils out.

(which isn't saying much, as the proud tradition of Sun Devil hoops is making the tourney once every 4 years...)

You understand something that NONE of the male athletes at my old high school could seem to get.  Yes, your teammate is gay.  No, he's not going to start eyeballing you in the locker room.  You're not his type.

[WARNING: factless speculation to follow]

Maybe ESPN tipped off the NFL that they would have an NFL player come out on their network soon, only Sports Illustrated found out about it, so they quickly published this coming out first to take away some of ESPN's shine on the issue.

[/factless speculation]

2013-04-29 12:07:59 PM
So I'm torn on ESPN right now. On one hand, I'd like to go "why is this news" because of the step forward in acceptance; on the other hand, ESPN's Tebow boner is making OMG TEBOW IS FREE AGENT the top story over this

/probably because it is a SI article

The Gay only counts if his shooting splits are at least 45%/34%/75%.
