4.5%?

NEVER TELL ME THE ODDS!

I don't even know who the top prospects are this year. I hope it's an awesome defenceman or goalie. We are doing okay for forwards, TYVM.

I've heard Seth Jones(?) is the top NA skater, and he's D.

The Blackhawks aren't participating, but I wouldn't mind if another prospect like Teuvo Taravanen falls to them again.

/gotta stay stocked on young talent; Kane and Toews are all the way to their mid-20s, and our top D-man is going to be 30 in a few years~!.

I can confirm there is an awesome defenseman available at #1.

It's all part of the Oilers' 23 year master plan for having an entire roster made up of number one draft picks.

Doesnt matter who picks 1st, its who they pick.

Some big names have been picked in 3rd round, or 4th. Some teams sucks at evaluating young players in the minors. Overall? Its still important, but not has much as having a good team on the minor hockey league networks circuit, looking out for players.

Sometimes it does matter.

The Penguins got Lemieux, Fleury and Crosby with #1 overall picks and Malkin and Staal with #2 overall picks. They wouldn't have gotten those guys if they were sitting at #5 or lower.

This year, it's probably less important about #1 overall and finding that guy who will fit your system.

Would love to see the Sabres get that 1st overall pick.

Only a 3.7% chance though.

Useful AHL/other minor-league affiliates seem pretty crucial for supplying a team with depth.

This is a draft thing, though. I do not want to watch a draft. I want to watch pucks and and fisticuffs and toothless Canadians. Can it be Tuesday?

This is what the Leafs, Blues and Rangers fail to learn from. You have to be all out terrible for a while. The Penguins have the pattern down.

Drafted at the end of the 7th round, the 8th player drafted by the Red Wings.

The Oilers certainly have gotten the all out terrible part down...

If they can get two good top defencemen, then they've got a real shot at a good playoff run next year.  They damn well better resign Jones, I loved his comment about wanting to see the work pay off.  An elite goalie would be nice, but isn't really necessary, and Dubnyk has the ability to shrug off 4 soft goals to save the crucial 5th.

But that damn defence core, and Whitney on the way out...*covers eyes*

The Leafs were all out terrible for a while, the problem was they traded what wound up being their highest pick in twenty years to Boston.

Mind you Kessel has been a PPG player and top 10 scorer for two straight years now.

Could very well be the first African-American drafted first overall in the NHL Draft.

If I'm picking first, though I'm taking MacKinnon. I want a franchise center.

1st round draft pick, but 27th overall. Scott Gomez. Really a good player, if you compare him with other 1st round players on my list.

upload.wikimedia.org

Pk Subban, Second round, 43th overall. Contender for the Norris and most hated player in the Nhl. I think he won the latter.

upload.wikimedia.org

Brendan Gallagher. 5th round pick, Contender for rookie of the year, 147th overall.

cdn.bleacherreport.net

Alexandre Daigle, 1st round 1st pick, worst draftee ever everer, was given a huge contract from the getgo, indirectly responsible for rookies salary cap limits as of today. He impacted the sport more than he could with his skills.

cdn.bleacherreport.net

Di Pietro, 1st round 1st pick overall, is "mommy im hurt" type of player. Might do something, someday.

If an African-American gets selected first overall int he NHL draft, does that declare racism officially over?

You're cherry-picking, Lonestar.

Generally, superstars come near the top of the draft.  The vast majority of players drafted after th first round turn out to be busts.

Sure, there are some, very few, excellent players found in the later rounds.  But that's more dumb luck than good scouting. Don't you think that if the Wings' front office knew what a good player Zetterberg would turn into, they wouldn't have waited until the 7th round to take him, after hundreds of chances for other teams to take him?

After the top 5 or so, the NHL draft is a total crapshoot as to whether any of those guys will pan out or not.

Okay, fine, 7th ain't so bad. Looking into it, maybe

the big Finn Rasmus Ristolainen will still be available?

Yeah I am. However the crap shoot is whether you can scout good players with a good team of scouts in the field. And then, once you work on your cherries, make sure they dont go sour.

Don't get me started. I always liked the guy and I really wish it had gone better for him (both for his benefit and the team's), but his selection and the trade that led to it were truly horrendous.

Exactly. Add in the story about Joe Sakic giving Popeye advice on where his kids should start and you have a great story.

But sherman will fark it up somehow. Fark that guy.

I always thought the Raycroft/Rask trade was their worst ever. But I'm a flames fan, if TO wants to steal a trade they just call flames management.
