minoridiot:

What kind of image do we present to the rest of the country? Are we doing their business, or are we just a group of narcissists who are mostly interested in elevating our own profiles?' And what comes through the screen on C-SPAN that night is the latter, and not the former."

It is a valid point.  It might be time to rethink the definition of journalism when the likes of Glen Beck and Kos Moulitsas can practice political activism while posing as jounalist.

Yeah, it's a valid point.  However, I'm more concerned when Dan Rather does it than the likes of Kos or Beck.  Reporters and editors for MSM are liberal -- and what bothers me is the recent decision to avoid covering the trial of Dr. Kermit Gosnell, and all of the side-stories, because reporting on that might throw a pall over abortion.

In the same way, it just MIGHT be of interest to many that Obama fails the E-verify system, and that the "birth certificates" he posted on his web site are both fakes - multi-layer photoshop files.  But you don't hear that on MSM, because it doesn't fit the MSM's leftist and Democratic agendas.  This is, IMHO, a much more serious problem than that extremist commentators are extremist.

LargeCanine: Back in the day, journalists were often skeptical war vets who got their stories by burning shoe leather. It occurs to me that the decline in journalism started requiring journalism degrees to get entry jobs. Perhaps the profession would benefit by accepting people with an interest and passion - people retiring from other professions or successful folk who want a change, for example.

no. the decline in journalism happened as a result of media consolidation, started under reagan and continuing through the clinton administration. once every news outlet was part of a larger entertainment conglomerate, news became "entertainment" and movies and TV shows became "news" (i.e., "synergy").

shoe leather costs money, showing clips from your own company's movies does not. remember when supermodels were on the cover of magazines? now it's actresses, promoting product.

You're assuming journalism was in some wonderful idyllic spot in the first place. Big mistake.
