If they cure HIV, can we go back to the good old days of public orgies and such?

There's scarier stuff out there... It's not like Magic is on his deathbed or anything... Sure it sucks to get the HIV, but it would be worse to get AIDS or some other incurable and highly terminal STD...

And there are plenty of orgies going on, you just have to be a member of those kinds of clubs to get in and partake...

/an orgy was taking place on the smoking patio of the club my wife and i belong to while we were talking literature with our date...

I'm always amazed at how these breakthroughs happen when you least expect it.  I mean, these folks were studying pastries, and they happen upon this!

If Magic is shown looking healthy on TV while living with HIV and that inspires some that also have the disease to keep fighting then good for him.  What's he suposed to be doing subby, donning a lab coat and injecting the rats himself?

I hope the cure does involve pastries.

You should eat some, just to be sure.

If eating pastries solved any disease, I'm damn near invincible.

Headline: "brink of cure"
Article: "promising" and "efficacy in human body remains unproven"

Don't blame the researchers, they are making no overblown claims.

I'm at work, can someone pls dig up pic of news cycle of exaggeration of scientific discoveries?

/The HVTN vaccine failures give me a sad.

I think part of the problem is specific to HIV itself here. It is SUCH a nasty disease, always (or at least ALMOST always) fatal, recently came into existence, seemingly incurable, when you get even a sliver of hope the tendency to proclaim "ZOMG THEY CURED TEH AIDZ!!!1" is really tempting.

In any case, I applaud this progress and really hope it leads somewhere good.

Ummm.... trolling or genuine stupidity/ignorance?

There are several different different HIV sub-types and strains, and some are worse than others. The strains of HIV that are predominant in Western Europe and the USA aren't quite as nasty as those prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa, and Southeast Asia. Of course better (and regular) access to anti-HIV drugs and a smaller infected population really help too.

If you live in the west and either have good universal health care or money, HIV isn't the death sentence it once was. In fact in the US and Western Europe, again if you have access to the meds, you'll likely not develop in to full blown AIDs until you're elderly, and even then it might not happen.

/Still wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Pretty sure all you need is about $180,000 of concentrated cash directly into the bloodstream.

Right in that AIDS is worse than simply being HIV positive but not having AIDS.  Wrong in his veiled suggestion that AIDS is caused by something other than HIV.

Even untreated, HIV doesn't necesarely lead to AIDS.

But thinking that's what he meant could be giving him too much credit of course.

Or Medicaid, a good health care practitioner, and one pill, once a day. (If you didn't blow Atripla by noncompliance already.)

I don't treat a lot of HIV any more, but I still see plenty of fat and happy patients who are quite stable on their regimens.

If detected before you're so compromised a secondary infection has already mostly killed you (which takes a while) HIV's actually pretty much already manageable.  If you're heterosexual and in the English-speaking first world you're reasonably safe with the orgy thing statistically, as well.

Well... as far as HIV goes, lots of other things have high infection rates and aren't as manageable.

It doesn't.  Click on the bit that moves you to their homepage and you'll see that 90% of their content consists of obvious hoaxes and pseudoscience before you even read past the headlines.  This is apparently a quack rag, not an actual medical anything (not even a layman's medical anything).

The article linked is about as credible as it gets, which is to say that two paragraphs of blatant ignorance of basic biology is pretty low for them, apparently.
