Dear Comrade Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin managed to not just crush this generation's Chechnyan drive to independence, but also to radicalize the resistance from secular Chechnyan nationalists  to ultra-religious Muslim fanatics fighting for the Muslim state based on a strict Sharia law in the entire Couscous region.www.cbc.ca

I am amazed he said that. But once I got over my initial surprise I remembered that politicians lie to look good. If it was in Russia ... well, actually the last time "Chechens" did anything in Russia it was organised by the FSB to help Putin's position, so perhaps that's not the best example, but hypothetically if roles were reversed, as The Muthaship said, this guy would be dead, no question.

And he's right.

Which is scary, because that means there are Americans that are nuttier and more extreme than Vladimir Putin.

Didn't we get warnings on 9/11? It seems if you want to commit a terrorist act in the US just have a foreign government send a warning to the FBI and they will look away while you do it.

Now you have to understand what Mr. Putin is really saying here. He wouldn't declare them POWs. He would declare them anything. They would just go away. They'd just wash up on the beach somewhere and no one would be the wiser.

Then there would be a few raids and a few more dissidents would be put in body bags.

And he puts on great theater

There's a "War on drugs" as well but that doesn't mean a pot dealer should be classified as a POW. You can easily give too much credence to slogans in todays PR heavy world, yes yes you can...

Putin is undoubtedly conservative, though without the religious/cultural connotations that we in the U.S. would associate with such a label. I don't think he is right-"wing" so much as just right of center. He's not nearly as far right as Chavez was extreme left, for example. Though they both use statist totalitarianistic methods.
Putin is very corporation friendly. Whereas Chavez tended to confiscate and nationalize anything that was too sucessful.
I was amused by Putin's speech warning the U.S. not to rush headlong into a bunch of socialist policies that bankrupted Russia last century. A Russian president warning a U.S. president about the failures of socialism, lol.

Oh there's no doubt he capitalizes on the orthodox church as a conservative ally. It is purely power base consolidation.

Though im not sure if one snap from a photo op was supposed to prove something in your mind. As opposed to, say, obama attending mass every week and having radical clerics as his self described mentors.

I wish I had your ability to get inside Putin's head.. What he actually thinks doesn't matter anyway, actions speak louder than thoughts

Though im not sure if one snap from a photo op was supposed to prove something in your mind. As opposed to, say, obama attending mass every week and having radical clerics as his self described mentors.

It's metaphor. Better metaphor would be picture of them doing 69, but I doubt such picture exist

2013-04-29 02:15:54 PM
Agreed, actions speak louder than words. That's exactly my point. Though conservative, Putin is does not push for religiously based policies that we associate with the christian right, here in the U.S. Examples - Anti-Abortion, anti-contraception, creationism being taught in schools, anti-stem cell reseach, etc. etc. etc. Putin advocates none of those. He's an economic conservative and a strong nationalist, plain and simple.

That's what I meant by he doesn't have the religious portion of the "conservative" label that as we normally think of it here. What I'm saying isn't secret nor controversial. It's basic political awareness of the world stage. Though I realize that intelligent fact based conversation is rarely welcome on fark.

I'll admit though it's not clear to me what you are beating around the bush for? Are you trying to claim that Putin is a christian fundie? If so just go ahead and say it, lol. Stop trying to hedge at something while never actually committing to a position.
spit it out, man.
