"I say, you are the progeny that are issue from your mother and I's marriage and are ever so delightful.  We will shower you with love and meet your every need and encourage you academically."   "Oh, thanks so much daddy."

"MotherF*CKER, another mouth to feed.  You better not f*ck up in school, cause that sh*t costs money and keep your hands off of my stuff and get me a beer."  "Um, OK.  How do I go about this not f*cking up in school thing?"  "DON'T YOU CUSS!"

When your society is all about worshiping scraps of paper, you get a lot of leeway out of doing it better than others.

That's because rich people are genetically and socially superior to the lesser classes in every way.

Heard an interview on @petedominick last week where a guy who studies SAT results stated, "Show me data on the average home values in the school's neighborhood, and I will predict with shocking accuracy average SAT results".

Not  smartersubby...better educated. They're also healthier, they eat better, they're happier, they live longer, they have a lower divorce rate. It's almost like having more money means you have more opportunities and flexibility in life. Who knew?

The problem isn't that this long-known historical fact exists; it's that we currently seem to be doing everything in our power to reverse every vestige of social progress in the latter half of the 20th century, in a hard-charging bid to be Kansas, circa 1890.

Don't forget less exposure to environmental hazards that have been shown to decrease quality of life and often intelligence because NIMBY is for people with money.

I once read a comparison of SAT and ACT scoring with test prep.  IIRC with test prep average ACT scores increased at first (when you learned basic test taking skills and all), then leveled off.  SAT had a direct correlation between money spent on test prep and how well you did / how well you increased your score.

I really need to find that study again.

However, this is really disingenuous.  It *has* been proven that better nutrition leads to better learning, that certain environmental toxins have neurological effects especially in young children that affect their ability to learn, etc.

But I like the comic anyway, so there you go.

But the truth is, the world does not need ditch diggers anymore. A backhoe does that job. The world needs backhoe drivers but not that many of them.

Next you will be telling me that homes with two parents on average generate smarter kids. After that what next?  Households with college educated parents doing better? or How about income and food secure households?  Oh OH Oh how about quality of school districts as related to local housing prices?

In Kansas circa 1890, the world rightfully bestowed upon God's chosen people uncountable fortunes and protected them from any harm while cursing those who turned their backs to God with a cruel existence filled with slavish laboring and mass consumption of gruel. Who wouldn't want to live there?

I get what you're trying to say but a small-town politician and dog sled racer don't exactly smack of country club brunches. And I doubt she had great educational advantages, being the product of the school system in Bumfark Alaska. That daughter was already turning the town jock's jizz into a baby when her family came into money. Now, the youngest child, that one has the advantage of wealth and should be a real scholar.

Also if you've reached the point where you're building guillotines, even if it takes a couple iterations to get it right you'll probably have no shortage of test "subjects".

rumpelstiltskin: This article has it completely backwards. Rich kids aren't smarter because they're rich; smart kids are richer because they're smart.

There is a pretty low correlation between intelligence and wealth actually. That says a lot as the poor/middle class kids have more disadvantages from the start.  Now, the rich kids do tend to have a huge advantage in terms of networking and knowing how to grow/create wealth (and being in poverty literally causes brain damage from the stress).  Raw IQs aren't much different, but coming from a wealthy family get's you access to better schools and better job prospects.

That is super obvious, and a huge shame all in all. It's hard to make up for middle/lower classes disadvantage during their actual education, but those test prep courses really make things unfair.

Most poor kids don't even get that, their parents see school as free day care and care barely do half the work themselves.

The only way I was able to rise up above it was my parents, who we're educated themselves and actually gave a damn about me and my academic career.

Even then, if my parents had money I would have gone much much farther. I could have had tutoring sessions to increase my math skills. I wouldn't have had to work 40 hours a week during the summer and could have gone to all these special academic camps my guidance counselor wanted me to go to.

Don't even get me started on basic financial literacy and healthcare.

If we can grow the teachers unions.....um, I mean, get our hands on some more customers...um, students....that will fix the problem.

2013-04-29 10:39:54 AM
What I don't get about the article is that they noted 'We've spent all this time worrying about the poor kids, and no one paid attention to what the rich kids were doing.  They were racing ahead and widening the gap.  How can we solve this problem' (I'm paraphrasing)

Um, isn't that pretty conclusive evidence that what we're doing to/for the poor kids isn't helping?  and since they acknowledge scores are increasing for everyone, just that rich kids have made better gains... how is this a problem?  Good for them.  Now, copy what they're doing for a generation and forget the rest of what we've tried.

No no no! What we need are more charter schools who cherry pick their students to flub performance records and receive government handouts and private handouts!  While not having to deal with those shiatty unions... I mean why should we allow people the freedom associate and collectively bargain?
